Elk Lake Swimmer Wins Two PIAA Medals

Elk Lake's Adam Phillips brought home two medals from the PIAA swimming championships at Bucknell University last week.

Phillips captured seventh-place medals in both the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke during the Class AA competition on March 16-17 in Lewisburg.

In the 200 IM, Phillips was sixth, overall, among the 32 competitors in the preliminary round, earning a spot in the final with a time of 1:59.40.

His time of 2:00.21 in the final was good for seventh, overall.

The next day, Phillips completed his 100 breaststroke preliminary race in 1:00.94, eighth, overall.

In the final, he shaved off over three-tenths of a second, finishing seventh in 1:00.61.

Elk Lake's Chelsea Karabin competed in the 50 freestyle, but didn't move past the preliminary round with a time of 25.53, 25th, overall.

In other Class AA action, Tunkhannock's Stephanie Halloran was 31st in her 100 breaststroke preliminary effort.

Athens' Erica Rogers advanced to the diving semifinals, finishing 20th with a score of 197.15 points.

The Athens' boys' 200 free relay team of Frank Chen, Corey Poklemba, Scott Fisher and Sean Marshall was 15th with a time of 1:32.49.

Sayre's Katherine Porter was 30th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.95.

In the boys' Class AAA competition, held on March 18-19, three Tunkhannock swimmers competed in four events, all coming up short of medals.

David Novak was 30th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.63. He also swam the 500 free, finishing 31st in 5:00.55.

Ben Spencer was 27th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.10.

Matt Kupchunas was 31st in the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.98.
