Elk Lake Tennis Players Enter District Play
The District Two girls’ tennis singles’ championships open today, Oct. 6, at Wilkes-Barre’s Kirby Park.
In the Class AA tournament, Elk Lake’s Lindsey Shingler faces Western Wayne’s Leanne O’Hora in the first round. Kyleen Sisson meets Holy Cross’s Laura Drapek in her opening match.
The semifinals and finals are slated for Friday, Oct. 7.
On Sept. 30, Cody Franssen and Tanner Reyan each scored as Elk Lake defeated Blue Ridge, 2-1.
Nick Dudock made eight saves in net for the Warriors, who outshot Blue Ridge, 19-9.
On Sept. 29, Lackawanna Trail swept Elk Lake, 25-14, 25-18, 25, 15.
Carley Bennett led the Lady Warriors with five kills. Katie VanEtten had nine digs and handed out six assists. Susanne Tewksbury also had six assists.
On Sept. 27, the Elk Lake boys went 5-1 in a seven-team meet at Honesdale.
The Lady Warriors swept their opponents, going 6-0.
In the boys’ meet, Elk Lake defeated Honesdale, 19-36; Western Wayne, 15-40; Montrose, 15-50; Carbondale, 15-50, and Forest City, 15-50. It lost to Blue Ridge, 25-30.
Elk Lake’s Luke Jones was the overall race winner in 18:28, followed by teammate Will Bennett, who had a time of 18:33. Other times included Ed Cumins (20:23), Jason Vermeulen (20:23) and Matt Horvath (20:42).
In the girls’ race, Elk Lake defeated Honesdale, 24-33; Blue Ridge 15-50; Carbondale, 15-50; Montrose, 17-43; Western Wayne, 15-44, and Forest City, 15-50.
Maria Trowbridge led Elk Lake, finishing second, overall, in 21:38. Kirsten Hollister was third in 21:48, followed by Jenny VanEtten in 21:57. Other times included Lainey Bedell (23:14), Abby Zdancewicz (23:33) and Emily Williams (23:57).
