Jennings, Raiders Headed to Nationals
Recent Wyalusing Valley graduate and University of Delaware recruit Brianna Jennings will spend next week in sunny southern California.
Jennings and her Conklin (NY) Raiders teammates qualified for the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) Gold National Tournament, which is slated for July 24-30 in San Diego, CA.
The Raiders, which includes some of the top players from the Twin Tiers, will join 63 other teams in the tournament.
Joining Jennings on the team from the Rocket-Courier readership area are Northeast Bradford High School standouts Taylor Keefe and Calla Martin.
The Raiders qualified for the national tournament with a victory in the ASA Gold Bid qualifying tournament in LaPlata, MD, in June.
After winning its opener, 10-7, over Glory (VA), the Raiders lost to Severna Park Hornets-Miller, 3-1.
In the consolation bracket, the Raiders won five games, including four on the field on the final day of the tournament.
With the top two teams advancing to the national tournament, Severna Park Hornets-Miller opted to forfeit the title to Conklin.
On Sunday, Conklin defeated Gold Coast Hurricanes-Norman, 7-2; Ashburn (VA) Shooting Stars, 3-2; Severna Park Hornets-Gold, 3-2, and Wagners Gold, 3-1.
Jennings pitched the first five games of the tournament.
Olivia May, an Athens resident and player at Elmira Notre Dame, picked up the win over Severna Park Hornets-Gold.
Alix Taylor, a Mountain View High standout, was the winning pitcher against Wagners Gold.
This past weekend, the squad, in a final tune-up for nationals, won the Stop DWI Tournament at the BAGSAI complex in Binghamton.
