Lady Warriors Win District Title; Reach PIAA Quarterfinals
Elk Lake’s Brianna Hollenbeck drove in the game-winning run in a 2-1 victory over Pen Argyl in the first-round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs at Marywood University on June 6.
Earlier, Elk Lake had advanced to the PIAA playoffs with a 2-1 win over Nanticoke in the District Two championship game on June 2.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, Hollenbeck singled home Kyla Marcy for the victory.
Elk Lake will meet Brandywine Heights, the District Three champions, in the PIAA quarterfinals today (June 9) at Bloomsburg University. Game time is 4 p.m.
Brooke Darling, who fanned 11 batters while allowing just four hits and one walk, also helped at the plate, driving in Kenzi Moon in the bottom of the first inning.
Moon, Hollenbeck and Casey Tyler each had two hits for Elk Lake.
Pen Argyl tied the score with a solo run in the fourth inning.
Deleila Schriner took the loss, despite an eight-strikeout performance.
In the District Two title game, Elk Lake scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally past the Lady Trojans.
Nanticoke scored its run in the fourth inning on Sarah Bertoni’s RBI double.
In the seventh, Darling opened the inning with a double.
Tyler followed with a triple to plate Debbie Harvey, who was the courtesy runner for Darling.
Marcy then reached on an error that allowed Tyler to score the winning run.
Darling had nine strikeouts in the win. She gave up five hits and walked one batter.
Gabby Baltzley had Elk Lake’s other hit.
Bertoni tossed a three-hitter in the loss. She had five strikeouts and walked one batter.
