Locals Survive Bald Eagle Megatransect


Several area runners competed in the Bald Eagle Megatransect Challenge in Lock Haven on Oct. 1.

Ulster’s John Johnson, the winner of this year’s Camptown Races and Albany Valley Challenge, was the first local finisher in the grueling 25-mile run over very rugged terrain.

Johnson finished 17th, overall, in the 575-competitor field, with a time of 5:31:44.

Two Wyalusing men—Bob Lantz and Gary Ferguson—also participated. Lantz finished 126th in 7:08:22, while Ferguson crossed the line in 7:40:01, for 182nd.

Towanda’s Martin Perez also ran, finishing 192nd in 7:42:46.

Dave Lister of Jersey Shore was the overall race winner in 4:25:57.

Mary Kowalski of Hollidaysburg was 16th, overall, to lead the women with a time of 5:31:44. 


Steamtown Marathon

At Scranton, on Oct. 8, Peter Kemboi of Hebron, KY, won the race from Forest City in 2:19:26. Matt Byrne was second in 2:22:38, 20 seconds ahead of Kevin Borrelli.

Renee Skelly of Philadelphia and Samantha Snead of Moscow, PA, were the first- and second-place women, respectively. Skelly, 14th, overall, finished in 2:50:58, while Snead was 15th in 2:51:20.  Shannon Roof was third in 3:02:23.

Several runners from the immediate Wyoming County area were in the field led by Mehoopany’s Mark Fueshko, who was 509th in the 1,864 field of finishers. His time was 3:42:44.

Other times included Tunkhannock’s Robert Damiano (3:48:13), Scott Kulah (4:14:58), Scott Benedict (4:37:15), Tierney Ayers (4:41:38), Angie Burke (4:41:38) and Shari Philmeck (4:59:37). Montrose’s D.J. Spillman (4:22:12) and Ann Lathrop (4:23:34) were also in the field.
