Martin Leads Lady Rams Past Towanda in NTL East Opener
Mackenzie Martin scored 19 points to lead the Wyalusing Valley girls’ basketball team to a 58-53 win over Towanda at Layman Gymnasium on Dec. 21.
The Lady Rams improved to 4-0 with the victory in their home and Northern Tier League East opener.
Trailing 14-10 entering the second quarter, Wyalusing used a combination of stingy defense, aggressive rebounding and timely outside shooting to outscore the Lady Knights, 35-16, through the second and third quarters.
Martin netted nine points in the middle quarters.
Arielle Kneller, who finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds, added seven points over the same span. Kayleen drained a pair of three pointers.
Towanda battled back in the fourth quarter behind the three-point shooting of Alysha Grimes who made three treys in the stanza.
Alexis Daly added eight points for the Lady Rams and Laci Holdren chipped in six points.
Daly pulled down five rebounds for Wyalusing, which held a 26-18 advantage under the boards. She also made three blocks.
Holdren dished out a pair of assists and paced the Lady Rams’ defense with six steals.
Darien Lantz and Ashley Fleming paced Towanda with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Lantz, who was credited with her 500th career assist during the game, dished out five helpers. She also made three steals. Fleming made four steals.
Alaina Wickwire pulled down five rebounds for the Lady Knights.
Wyalusing won the junior varsity game to remain undefeated at 3-0. Veronica Morrison led the Lady Rams with 12 points. Kasey DeVoir and Paighton Martin added 10 points each.
Lacianne Manning led Towanda with 12 points.
