Rams' Hart Claims Carlisle Title; Team Defeats Milton
Led by 132-pound champion Ryan Hart, Wyalusing Valley finished second in the Carlisle Holiday Tournament held on Dec. 16-17.
The Rams finished with 187.5 points, well behind Big Spring, which won with 230.5 points.
Hart, who edged Carlisle’s Ian Shannon, 4-3, in the championship final, was one of 11 Rams to place in the top six in the 16-team tournament.
A 135-pound runner-up in Carlisle last year, Hart opened the tournament with a 13-6 win over Bermudian Springs’ Briton Shelton. He defeated Red Land’s Joe Fought, 9-5, in the semifinals.
Two other Rams reached the finals of their respective weight-classes, but fell short of a title.
Joey Champluvier, who won the 145-pound title in Carlisle last year, dropped a 10-4 decision to Fairfield’s Clay Kocsis in the 152-pound final.
Champluvier reached the final with a 10-2 major decision over Carlisle’s Wes Loudon and an 8-3 semifinal win over West York’s Garrett Stauffer.
Kelley, wrestling at 120 pounds cruised into the final with 15-0 technical falls over Shippensburg’s Derek Watson and West York’s Cole Rinehart and a 2:51 pin over Berkley Prep’s Anthony Rauft-Lomano.
In the final, Hempfield’s Dakota Minnich defeated Kelley by major decision, 9-0.
Tim Kuntz (145), Dan Frankenfield (170), Anthony Clark (182) and Dylan Otis (220) all finished third for the Rams. They all went 4-1 in the tournament.
Clayton Force finished fourth at 285 with a 2-2 record.
At 195, Warner Mendoza finished fifth with a 3-2 record.
Austin Shaffer (106) and Tyler Fenton (160) both finished sixth with 3-3 records.
Colston Gowin (113), Justin Haley (126) and Ryan Force (138) also participated. Gowin and Haley each finished with 0-2 records, while Force went 1-2.
Wyalusing 45, Milton 27
At Milton, on Dec. 20, the Rams picked up four forfeits over an under-manned Milton squad to improve to 7-0.
Fenton (160), Clayton Force (285), Shaffer (106) and Gowin (113) all received forfeits for the Rams.
Frankenfield (170), Kelley (120) and Hart (138) all added pins. Frankenfield decked Norman Saban in 20 seconds. Kelley stopped Chance Kurstetter in 1:13. Hart pinned Colin Arndt in 1:05.
Kuntz had Wyalusing’s only other win, a 7-2 decision over Taylor Porter, at 145 pounds.
Milton recorded two pins as Ryan Preish downed Champluvier in 3:00 of their 152-pound bout that opened the match. Jarred Fogalman added a 54-second pin of Mendoza at 195.
Colton Showers added a 15-0 technical fall over Ryan Force in 5:14 of their 132-pound bout.
At 220, Ryan Solomon major decisioned Otis, 11-2.
Don English added a 3-2 overtime decision over Clark at 182. Zack Bennett decisioned Haley, 9-2, at 126.
