Rams Impress in First Scrimmage
One shouldn’t read too much into a scrimmage, but Wyalusing Valley’s pre-season encounter with Montrose on Saturday, Aug. 20 gave the handful of Ram fans in attendance reason for optimism.
On an ideal late-summer morning in the Susquehanna County seat, the Rams outscored the Meteors, three touchdowns to two.
Behind a mostly veteran offensive line, Wyalusing’s first team backfield of Dan Frankenfield and Tyler Thompson combined for 163 yards on the ground.
Thompson scored a pair of touchdowns on runs of three and 43 yards. Frankenfield gained 102 yards on 10 carries.
Terron Millard added a two-yard touchdown run on the Rams last offensive play of the 180-minute scrimmage.
“We’ve got experience up on the line and a couple backs that are quick,” Wyalusing head coach Jim Huffman said.
“Tyler Thompson surprised everybody.”
Through the air, Wyalusing didn’t fare as well, completing just four of nine passes for 55 yards and one interception.
Huffman is optimistic that the facet of the game will improve.
“We do have a passing game if everybody runs the right things,” he said.
While graduation losses are a concern across the board, the defensive side of the ball took the hardest hit with several key playmakers gone.
An undermanned Montrose was able to exploit the Rams’ inexperience, especially on a 65-yard touchdown run on its second series.
Montrose’s other touchdown came on its penultimate series, which was between the two backup units.
“We are green,” Huffman admitted. “We have a lack of playing time and experience.
“Defensively, it will take us a couple to three weeks to get that ironed out and see who is going to be where.”
The defense did make some big plays.
Aaron Johnson intercepted a pass, Paul Fusco had a sack, Jeremy Allyn recovered a fumble, and Tim Ace broke up a pass.
Huffman was also looking for the seniors to provide leadership on the field.
“I saw some today,” he said. “Not as much as I’d like to see.”
Overall, Huffman felt it was a productive scrimmage.
“We had a good look at all our kids,” he said. “We put quite a few people in different places and we made a couple of decisions.”
Wyalusing will entertain Susquehanna for the final scrimmage of the preseason on Friday, Aug. 26, starting at 7 p.m.
The Extra Point Club will hold its annual Meet the Players Night on Thursday, Aug. 25, starting at 6 p.m. in the high school gym. The players will then be available for photos prior to a brief evening workout at Peterson Stadium.
