Runners Brave Cold for Charity

A bitter March wind and temperatures that struggled to reach the mid-30s didn't deter 58 runners and walkers who completed the inaugural Shamrock 5K at Towanda's Memorial Park on Saturday, March 19.

Aaron Valoroso, a sophomore at Towanda High School, was the overall winner in the race, which was a fundraiser for the Abuse and Rape Crisis Center (ARCC) in Bradford County.

Valoroso survived the blustery conditions and the course that featured Towanda's hilly terrain to finish in 19:39, 35 seconds ahead of runner-up Andy Platt, who ran a 20:14.

"It got tough at the end," Valoroso said. "I saw him (Platt) coming up behind me and I thought I'm not going to let him get me.

"I powered up the last two hills and that was it."

Stacy Meitzler was third, overall, and the first female finisher, crossing the line in 20:29. She finished well ahead of the next female, Destiny Foster, who was 11th with a time of 24:11.

The Milan resident enjoyed the course and its unique features.

"It was very challenging," Meitzler said. "It's a good cross country course. It's nice to have something a little different than some of the flatter road races around here."

Both Valoroso and Meitzler were appreciative of the charity they supported with their entry in the race.

"I always like to donate to the local races and have fun with them," Valoroso said.

"It is always nice to come out and support the community," Meitzler added. "It makes it a lot more fun."

ARCC board president Hilary Haight was satisfied with the turnout for the fundraiser.

"For our first one, we were pretty pleased with it," Haight said.

A total of 63 runners/walkers signed up for the event, including 41 who pre-registered. This was a very good number considering there was a competing race elsewhere in the county at the same time.

Haight explained that the run was the brainchild of ARCC staffer Erika Steele, herself a runner. With the help of Les Sheridan, who organizes the Riverfest 5K in Towanda, the run came together.

"We were hoping for warmer weather, but this is what we got," Haight joked as the wind swirled through the picnic area at the park.
