WVHS Grappler Earns Academic Honor

Tyler Thompson, a junior on last season’s Wyalusing Valley wrestling team, was named to the District Four Wrestling Academic All-Star honorable mention list. Besides carrying an outstanding 3.36 G.P.A., Thompson was a standout on the mat for the Rams, recording a 21-10 record last season.

Numerous Northern Tier League wrestlers made the list. Earning first-team honors were Sayre’s Joe Licata; Towanda’s Kyle Blascak, Zack Ripic and Caleb Willey and Wellsboro’s Brandon Owlett. The second team included Northeast Bradford’s Jacob Balchikonis and Zach Green; Towanda’s Cody Wheeler and Wellsboro’s Chad Daugherty. Joining Thompson on the honorable mention list were Mansfield’s Tyler Stettler; Sayre’s Kyle Post; Towanda’s Dale Maynard, Terrick Vargason and Garrett VanDeMark and Wellsboro’s Brent Acorn and Jacob Clemens.


Official Bear Harvest Announced

Hunters harvested 3,090 bear during the 2010 five-day archery and three-day rifle season, according to final figures released by the Pennsylvania Game Commission on April 15. The total included 269 taken during the archery season and 2,821 during the rifle season, which included a Saturday opening day.

It was the fifth largest harvest in history. The record was in 2005 when 4,164 bears were taken. Eleven of the bears harvested last year weighed over 600 pounds.

Locally, in the Rocket-Courier readership area, Sullivan County led the way with 57 bear killed, followed by Susquehanna County (41), Bradford County (38) and Wyoming County (22). In the two Wildlife Management Units (WMU) in the area, there were 234 bear killed in WMU 3B, while 118 were killed in WMU 3C. 


Five Mile Point Racing Postponed

The Southern Tier Open for Modifieds, slated for Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, NY, was postponed on Saturday, April 16. It will be made up on Saturday, April 23.

Besides the Modified division, racing will also include IMCA Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks and Lightning Cats. Racing begins at 5:55 p.m.


In-Season Trout Stocking Slated

There are four in-season trout stockings slated for the next week in the Rocket-Courier coverage area, beginning on April 21 when the Loyalsock Creek in Sullivan County will be restocked. The meeting place is the DCNR Ranger station on Rt. 87 at 11:15 a.m.

On April 26, stocking in Susquehanna County begins at 1 p.m. at Quaker Lake. The truck will also visit spots on Silver Creek and Fall Brook.

Two separate stocking runs are slated for April 27. The Schrader Creek will be stocked, starting at 11:15 a.m. at Wheelerville. In Forkston, at 12:30 p.m., Mehoopany Creek and North Branch of Mehoopany Creek will be stocked.
