WVHS Sports Physicals Slated
Sports physicals for Wyalusing Valley athletes will be held in the high school nurse’s office on Friday, Aug. 5 for students with last names starting with A through K. Students whose names begin with L through Z should report on Thursday, Aug. 11. The times for both days are 9 a.m. through 2 p.m.
All students planning to participate in a fall sport must have a physical prior to the start of practice.
Students are asked to pay their activity fee at the time of their physical. The fee is $40 for ninth through 12th graders and $25 for seventh and eighth graders. No one will be allowed to get the physical or begin practice without paying the activity fee first. Students who were in the free or reduced lunch program during the 2010-11 school year are exempt from the fee.
Ryan’s Hope Tourney Set
Eighteeen co-ed softball teams will do battle on the Wysox Volunteer Fire Department field for the annual Ryan’s Hope Memorial Tournament on Aug. 13-14. The event honors the memory of Canton-area resident Ryan Atherton-Ely, who died of cancer at 23 in 2004. Money raised from the tournament will go to the charity selected by the winning team. Besides the team entry fees, funds will also be raised through sponsorships and a 50/50 raffle.
Saturday’s opening day schedule is as follows: 8 a.m.: Weed’s Wackers v. Vance’s Barber Shop; 8:45 a.m.: Wilson’s Contracting v. War Hawks; 9:30 a.m.: Week-end Warriors v. Terry’s Titans; 10:15 a.m.: Wysox Firemen v. Stormin’ Mamfas; 11 a.m.: Bud’s Kin v. Average Jakes; 11:45 a.m.: Jegs v. SVT; 12:30 p.m.: Fast Fords v. Kobras; 1:45 p.m.: Mustangs v. Upside Downers; 2:30 p.m.: Guthrie v. Weed Wackers/Vance’s Barber Shop winner; 3:15 p.m.: Leroy General Store v. Wilson’s Contracting/War Hawks winner. The elimination round will begin following the 3:15 p.m. game, with the last Saturday tilt beginning at 9:15 p.m. Action on Sunday begins at 8 a.m.
Baseball Showcase Openings Available
The DeMarini/Wilson Skills Baseball Instructional Showcase is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 7, at Mansfield University. Instruction and evaluations will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is open to any top high school prospect looking to advance to the college or professional level. The cost is $150 per player, which includes lunch.
Representatives from NCAA Division I, II and III, as well as junior college coaches, will be in attendance. Athletes will be tested in the 60-yard dash, arm strength from their primary positions and live batting practice. The instructional staff includes Mansfield University’s Harry Hillson, as well as coaches from Slippery Rock, Sullivan Community College, Binghamton University, St. John Fisher, Tompkins Community College and Wellsboro High School.

Softball Tryouts Slated
The NEPA/Abington Wildcats 16-under and 18-under fastpitch travel softball organization will conduct tryouts for its fall 2011 and summer 2012 team at Abington Heights High School in Clarks Summit. The tryouts are slated on Wednesday, Aug. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 14, from 1 to 3 p.m.

YMCA Youth Flag Football Planned
The Bradford County Branch YMCA will offer a Youth Flag Football program for youths, ages eight to 11 years, starting Wednesday, Aug. 31. Game times each Wednesday will be 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Mixed Bowling League Forming
Bowlers are being sought for a Mixed Doubles League (one man and one woman per team), which will play at Starlite Lanes in North Towanda on Sunday nights starting Sept. 11. The league schedule is 28 weeks long. Matches begin at 8 p.m. each week.
