WVHS Girls' Soccer Falls Short in Playoff Chase

 

Towanda’s Taylor Shay scored the game-winning goal midway through the second half, derailing Wyalusing Valley’s district playoff hopes on Oct. 22.

With the 2-1 loss at Towanda, the Lady Rams finished the season with a 7-9-1 record, one win short of qualifying for the District Four Class A playoffs.

The last time the Lady Rams, who went 1-5-1 over their last seven games, failed to qualify for post-season action was 2006.

Towanda’s Ashley Fleming opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 16:17 of the first half.

A little over 10 minutes later, Lauren Chadwick took a Paighton Martin pass and beat Towanda goalkeeper Michelle Aronson to even the score.

Shay’s unassisted goal came at 20:56 of the second half.

Statistically, it was a fairly evenly-matched contest. Both teams took seven shots. Towanda had a 4-2 corner kick advantage.

Aronson made six saves in net.

Wyalusing’s McKenzi Millard had six saves.

 

Troy 3, Wyalusing 0

At Wyalusing, on Oct. 20, Troy recorded its third shutout of the season against the Lady Rams.

Rachael Stafford made four saves for the Lady Trojans, who clinched sole possession of the Northern Tier League title with the victory.

After a scoreless first half, Erin Shedden opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 19:06.

Brooke Mattocks and Sarah Hunsicker added insurance goals at 29:07 and 31:56, respectively. Hunsicker assisted on Mattocks’s goal.

Millard had three saves for the Lady Rams.

Troy outshot Wyalusing, 6-4, and had a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
