WVHS Grappler Places Second at PJW State Tournament

Three Wyalusing Valley students competed in the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Tournament at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre last weekend.

Dylan Otis, competing in the 13-14 age-group, was second in his 212-pound weight class.

Creighton Edsell, wrestling in the 9-10 age-group, 85-pound division, finished fifth.

Collin Edsell also competed in the 13-14 age-group at 97 pounds.

To qualify for the state tournament, wrestlers had to finish in the top three of a sectional tournament and then finish in the top two in their area tournament.

Otis won his Tunkhannock Sectional Qualifier and the Area X tournament, which includes PIAA District Four and a large section of District Two.

Otis major decisioned Greensburg-Salem's Grant Slezak, 13-0, in his opening-round bout. He followed that up with a 6-2 win over Wilson's Hunter Hatlee in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Otis blanked Sharpsville's Jacob Llewellyn, 2-0.

In the final, Coatesville's Michael Boykin defeated Otis, 3-1, in overtime. Boykin was a varsity wrestler during the high school season, compiling a 22-9 record for the Class AAA school.

After a scoreless first period, Boykin took a 1-0 lead with a second-period escape.

Late in the third period, Otis tied the score with an escape, sending the match into overtime. Boykin won the bout with a late takedown in the extra period.

Between his junior high campaign and his run through the PJW post-season, Otis compiled a 36-2 record that also included a loss to Lake-Lehman's Dustin Jones during a junior high tournament. Jones won the PJW 252-pound title. During the PJW campaign, Otis was coached by his father, Gary Otis.

Creighton Edsell opened the tournament with a 3:39 pin of Marion Center's Charlie Beatty. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Thomas Jefferson's Max Shaw, 6-0. Chestnut Ridge's Justin McCoy defeated Edsell in the semifinals, 3-0. Harrisburg's Dupri Flemister downed Edsell, 6-4, in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place bout, Edsell defeated Parkland's Joseph Guida, 4-0.

Collin Edsell opened the tournament with a 4-0 pigtail win over Ringgold's Jacob Gerard. He lost to Kane's Cody Blankenship, 2-0, in the preliminary. In his first consolation bout, Edsell defeated Waynesburg's Shaun Wilson II, 6-2. South Middleton's Korbin Myers eliminated Edsell with a 12-0 win.

One Towanda wrestler competed in the tournament.

Dayton Wickwire, wrestling in the 11-12 age-group at 135 pounds, won his first two bouts, defeating Fairview's Michael Hughes, 15-0, and Ligonier Valley's Nathan Trottier, 12-2. After losing to Philadelphia's Elijah Hutchinson, 3-0, Wickwire was eliminated with an 8-3 loss to Kiski Area's Alexander Delp.
