WVHS Softball: Lady Rams Fall to Northeast Bradford
Northeast Bradford clinched the Northern Tier League East softball title with a 4-0 victory over Wyalusing Valley.
The loss snapped an eight-game Lady Ram win streak and dropped them to 8-3 in the league, two games behind the Lady Panthers.
Wyalusing rebounded with a 3-1 non-league win over Loyalsock on May 14 to improve to 15-3, overall.
Northeast Bradford had games with Troy and Athens yet to play, while Wyalusing still must play Sayre.
The Sayre game, which has been twice postponed because of weather, is now slated for Friday, May 20 at Wyalusing.
Northeast Bradford 4, Wyalusing 0
At Wyalusing, on May 13, Northeast Bradford freshman pitcher Chelsea Souto held Wyalusing to just three hits in the shutout.
Wyalusing’s only scoring threat in the game came in the third inning when Bobbi Jo Loyack and Brianna Jennings reached on back-to-back two-out singles.
But Souto got Arielle Kneller to fly out to center field to end the threat.
Gabby Edsell had a leadoff single in the fourth inning, but was stranded at first base.
Souto fanned nine Wyalusing batters and gave up three walks.
Northeast Bradford struck for a pair of runs in the first inning.
Nikki Emick’s two-run single plated Haylie Phillips, who had reached on a two-out walk, and Kelsey Carlsen, who singled.
The Lady Panthers scored a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Taylor Keefe opened the frame with a single. Calla Martin’s triple scored Keefe. Martin came home on a passed ball.
Jennings gave up five hits and one walk, while fanning six batters.
Wyalusing 5, Canton 1
At Canton, on May 11, Jennings tossed a one-hitter for the Lady Rams.
Jennings and Edsell each had first-inning home runs in the victory.
Laci Holdren opened the game with a double and scored on Jennings’s blast to left field.
Edsell cleared the left-field fence two batters later for a 3-0 Lady Ram lead.
Canton’s only run came in the third inning.
Chelsea Heatley walked and scored on an error off the bat of Kelsey Ross.
Wyalusing added two insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Cathryn Pugh walked and Chelsea Epler singled to open the stanza. Pugh scored on Lauren Chadwick’s RBI single. Epler scored on Holdren’s sacrifice bunt.
Jennings recorded six strikeouts and walked two batters.
Heatley had three strikeouts and gave up 10 hits and two walks for Canton.
Wyalusing 3, Loyalsock 1
At Wyalusing, on May 14, Jennings gave up one hit and struck out seven in a non-league victory.
Loyalsock’s only hit came in the fifth inning on Ashleigh Bair’s RBI single. S. Dellott had reached on an error to open the stanza.
Jennings helped her own cause in the third inning, reaching on a leadoff double and scoring on Edsell’s single.
Edsell later scored on an error.
Epler, who singled to open the sixth inning, scored on an error off the bat of Caitlyn Doerner.
Casey Ulmer took the loss for Loyalsock. She gave up eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
