WVHS Spikers Reach Central Mountain Touney Semis
The Wyalusing Valley girls’ volleyball team opened the 2011 season at Central Mountain Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 3.
The Lady Rams, competing in Pool A of the Gold bracket, finished with a 5-1 record, before losing to Wellsboro in the semifinals.
Wyalusing swept Clearfield, 25-18, 25-8, and Central Mountain, 25-23, 26-24, in pool play. It split with Wellsboro, losing the first game, 21-25, and winning the second, 26-24.
In the semifinals, Wellsboro swept the Lady Rams, 26-24, 25-23.
During the day, Cassie Nedley led Wyalusing with 24 service points, including six aces. Laci Holdren had 22 points and 11 aces. Christina Hons had 21 points and four aces.
Erika Huffman had 19 kills. Veronica Morrison and Erin Dean-Swank each had 10.
Morrison had four blocks. Jessica Carr and JoAnna McGee had three and two, respectively.
Holdren and Morrison each had 23 digs. Elesha Schulze added 22.
Huffman handed out 16 assists, while Hons had 13.
Mansfield 3, Wyalusing 2
At Wyalusing, on Sept. 6, the visiting Lady Tigers won the fifth and deciding game, 15-9, to hand the Lady Rams a loss in their Northern Tier League debut.
After Wyalusing captured the first game, 25-19, Mansfield rebounded with wins in the next two games, 25-23 and 25-18. Wyalusing answered with a 25-21 victory in the fourth game.
Hons led Wyalusing with 13 points, including four aces. She also handed out nine assists and made eight digs.
Holdren had a strong game in the backcourt with 10 points, four aces and 10 digs. She also had five kills.
Huffman had eight points, four on aces, nine assists, eight kills and eight digs.
Morrison made 12 digs. Carr and Dean-Swank each had four kills. Sara Huffman had two aces.
Mansfield’s Marissa Tice and Courtney Dibble each had 15 points. Garri Ogden added 13 points. Dibble added 11 digs, while Tice contributed seven kills.
Wyalusing lost the junior varsity match. After Mansfield won the first game, 25-20, Wyalusing won the second, 26-24. Mansfield clinched the win with a 15-11 victory in the third game.
Keon Copp led Wyalusing with eight points and five aces. Delana Szemple and Christina Jackson each had six points. Alicia Tewksbury made two kills and three assists. Danielle Clark had two kills. Danelle Salsman had two assists. Sarah LaFrance made one block.
