WVHS Volleyball: Lady Rams Defeat Sayre, Atens; Fall to Canton


The Wyalusing Valley girls’ volleyball team appeared poised to notch its third straight win after winning the first games with Canton at Layman Gymnasium on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

However, Canton rallied to win the next three games to snap the Lady Rams’ two-match winning streak. Wyalusing dropped to 5-5 with the loss and 4-4 in the NTL East.

Wyalusing won the first two games, 25-20, and 25-22.

In the first game, Jessica Carr served seven of her team-high 14 points, giving Wyalusing a 13-5 lead it never surrendered.

Canton scored eight unanswered points to open the third game en route to a 25-17 win.

The Lady Warriors closed out the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth game and a dominating 15-8 win in the fifth game.

Carr also had nine kills and three blocks for Wyalusing.

Erin Dean-Swank had 15 kills, four blocks, four digs and four points.

Erika Huffman also had 15 kills. She added 14 assists, six points and three blocks.

Christina Hons handed out 11 assists and made six points and two kills.

Laci Holdren had eight digs, seven points, four assists and two kills.

Elesha Schulze had nine digs, seven assists, five points and four kills.

Veronica Morrison had eight kills, seven points, seven digs and four blocks.

Cassie Nedley had four points and an ace. Savannah Cobb added three digs and an assist. Samantha Gruver made five digs.

For Canton, Michaelaa Gaiotti had 22 points, including seven aces. She also had 13 digs. Korgan Palmer had 26 digs. Bridget Tracy handed out 24 assists and made 14 digs. Rachel Holmes had 16 digs.

Wyalusing won the junior varsity match, 2-1 (25-23, 14-25, 15-8).

Alicia Tewksbury had seven points for Wyalusing. Keon Kopp had four kills. Jaine Cantale made three digs. Danelle Salsman had three assists.


Wyalusing 3, Athens 0

At Wyalusing, on Sept. 30, the Lady Rams avenged a three-game loss to Athens three days earlier.

Wyalusing won the first two games by identical 25-16 scores. The Lady Rams closed out the match with a 26-24 win in the third game.

Huffman had 16 kills, eight points and six assists.

Schulze had nine points, an ace, eight digs, six assists, three kills and a block.

Carr had nine points, two aces, four kills and two blocks.

Morrison had eight points, four digs, three kills and a block.

Dean-Swank added five kills, a block and a dig.

Holdren had three points, seven digs and four kills.

Hons had two points, an ace, eight assists and a dig.

Sara Huffman added two points, an ace and a dig. JoAnna McGee had a dig and an assist.

For Athens, Halleigh Waite had 12 assists, seven points and eight digs. Jennifer Wells also had eight digs. Emily Elsbree made five kills.

Wyalusing won the junior varsity match, 2-1 (21-25, 26-24, 15-13).

Bailey Smith had nine points, four aces, three kills and two digs for Wyalusing. Jessica Card had five points, including three aces. Leigh Ann Miller added four points, an ace and a dig. Tewksbury handed out five assists and made two kills.


Wyalusing 3, Sayre 0

At Wyalusing on Sept. 29, the Lady Rams swept Sayre, 25-12, 25-16, 25-12.

Dean-Swank paced Wyalusing with 13 kills. She also had five digs, two assists and a block.

Huffman hit double digits in assists (13) and points (12). She also had seven kills, four digs, two aces and a block.

Schulze had 11 digs to go with three kills, two assists, five points and a block.

Hons had 11 service points, two aces, four assists and three digs.

Holdren finished with six points, three kills, two assists and five digs.

Kali Nesslein had two points and a dig, while Gruver made three digs. Carr added three points and two kills.

Sayre’s Des Waltman had six points and five kills.

Sayre won the junior varsity match, 2-1 (15-25, 25-21, 16-14),

Samantha Soltis led Sayre with 10 points.

Smith paced Wyalusing with nine points, including three aces. She also had two digs.

Alyssa Alaniz added five points, three digs and one ace.

Delana Szemple made three points, six kills and four digs.

Tewksbury handed out four assists. She also had three points, an ace and two kills.

Salsman made six points, a dig and one ace.

Kopp had one point, six digs and one assist.

Madison Eberlin had two aces for two points and dished out four assists. She had a dig.
