WVHS Volleyball: Lady Rams Still in Playoff Hunt


A spirited outing by the Wyalusing Valley girls’ volleyball team on Parents’ Night came up short in a 3-2 loss to Troy at Layman Gymnasium on Oct. 18.

Elesha Schulze closed out a hard-fought 26-24 win in the first game for Wyalusing with one of her 10 aces on the night.

In the second game, won by Troy, 25-22, the Lady Rams overcame an early 11-6 deficit to take a 13-12 lead.

Erin Dean-Swank’s kill to give Wyalusing a 16-14 lead in the third game provided a spark in the 25-19 win.

Troy responded with a dominant win in the fourth game, 25-19. Courtney Woodworth served up 10 unanswered points as Troy built an insurmountable 13-6 lead in the game.

In the final game, with Troy leading 5-4, Wyalusing surrendered a point and the serve on a net violation. Woodworth served up four more points, leading Troy to a 15-10 win in the game.

Schulze finished with 19 points and made 15 digs for the Lady Rams.

Laci Holdren had eight points, 19 digs and two blocks.

Erika Huffman handed out 15 assists to go with seven points and nine kills.

Dean-Swank had 10 kills, eight digs and two blocks.

Veronica Morrison made 10 digs. Jessica Carr had seven kills and four blocks.

The Lady Rams, now 6-8, need to sweep road games at Galeton on Oct. 20 and Wellsboro on Oct. 26 to qualify for the District Four, Class A playoffs. Williamson and Canton have already clinched playoff berths.

For Troy, Woodworth finished with 22 points and 44 assists. Taryn Hicks had 14 points and 21 digs. Mikayla Bristol had 14 kills and 12 digs. Kelsey Bristol added 14 kills and 14 digs.

Troy won the junior varsity game, 2-0 (25-20, 25-16).

Bailey Smith and Jessica Cantale each had four points for Wyalusing. Delana Szemple made five digs. Alicia Tewksbury had three  kills.


Williamson 3, Wyalusing 0

At Wyalusing, on Oct. 13, Williamson swept Wyalusing, 25-22, 25-19, 25-19.

Schulze led the Lady Rams with six points and three aces. She also had nine digs, three kills and three assists.

Holdren added five points, seven digs, four assists and three kills.

Christina Hons had four points, five digs and five assists.

Morrison had four points and three kills.

Huffman handed out 11 assists. She also had six kills and five digs.

Carr had six kills, five digs and two blocks.

Cassie Nedley had two points, an ace and three digs.

Dean-Swank made seven kills.

For Williamson, Kim Daugherty had nine kills and made four aces. Whitney Hurlburt made 15 digs. Lindsea Jones dished out 12 assists and served eight points. Jenna Hugic also had eight points. Lori Horton made eight blocks.

Williamson also won the junior varsity match in straight games, 25-13, 25-22.

Wyalusing’s Smith had five points and four digs. Christina Jackson also had four digs. Danielle Clark had three points. Tewksbury made three assists.
