WVMP Steps Up for Injured Drivers
Duane “Raceguy” Manzer concluded a very busy night of racing at Wyalusing Valley Motorsports Park with his easy win in the Spalding Foundation for Injured Drivers Charity Race on July 9.
Manzer, driving the All-Star Slingshot of Jake Maynard, easily outdistanced other large car racing notables such as Kenny Underwood, Jake Rought, Jason Sullivan and Derrick Tarbox.
The Homets Ferry track raised nearly $400 for the Spalding Foundation, which assists race drivers and track officials who are injured in racing-related accidents.
“These things are a blast,” Manzer said after crawling out of Maynard’s Slingshot after the event.
Besides the charity race, the large number of fans in attendance on a perfect night for racing along the Susquehanna River witnessed a full slate, including a 50-lap Sportsman kart feature.
In the Sportsman “Flyin’ 50” feature, which saw 19 karts take the green flag, Geoff Arnold started 17th and passed race leader Nick Funk on lap 34. Arnold handled the lapped traffic deftly, keeping Funk at bay for the remainder of the race. Wayne Miller finished third, followed by Ron Kipp and Bob Coveney.
There were also good numbers of the small cars, including 20 600 Microsprints in for their bi-weekly appearance at the track.
Veteran Chad VanHorn took the checkers in the 600 Microsprint finale. Jordan Tittle was second, followed by Dustin Jochum, Bobby Butler and Austin Ely.
Austin Bishop won the 270 Microsprint feature, ahead of Tittle, who had been seeking another Microsprint sweep. John Braim, Gene Beadle and Bob Maynard completed the top five in the 15-car field.
Dalton Maynard held off his cousin, Jake Maynard, to win the Slingshot feature, followed by Collin Hadlock, Dustin Fassett and Nick Molyneux.
In Junior Slingshots, Alex Shaffer took the checkers for his fourth victory of the year. Jared Zionkowski, Leo McGurrin, Kamdin Maby and Mitch Maynard made up the rest of the top five.
The rest of the Adult kart action saw at least one upset and a thrilling last-lap pass for another victory.
Dale Kuhne snapped Steve Potochney’s five-race winning streak in the Animal feature. Wayne Miller was third, followed by Ron Kipp and Bob Coveney.
In the Clone feature, Mike Ely led just the final lap as he passed leader Bob Schultz to take the checkers. Logan Terry and Rob Bahr completed the field.
Cal Snyder won the Flathead feature. Scott Lamphere was second, followed by Dave Hazard and Carl Abbott. The fifth-place spot was still unofficial pending video review.
In Youth kart action, Sarah Koch made her season debut at WVMP a memorable one. She dominated the Rookie Purple feature. Craig Smith was second, followed by Cody Kershner, Conner Davis and Destiny Powell.
Matt Addonna won the Novice Blue feature over Dom Rogers, Jacob Doyle, Riley Gowin and Seth Anderson.
Ryan Funk won the Sportskids feature in dominating fashion over Alex Shaffer, Lucas Bahr, Collin Hadlock and MacKenzie Doyle.
New clay was brought in to resurface the track Sunday morning, which give track officials plenty of time to get it ready for Saturday’s slate, which begins at 5:30 p.m.
