Warren Center Gymnast Signs with Alabama
Lauren Beers, daughter of Rick and Trish Beers of Warren Center, has signed a letter of intent to compete in gymnastics at the University of Alabama beginning with the 2013 season.
Beers, who competes out of the Southern Tier Gymnastics Academy in Endwell, NY, for coaches Daile Van Patten and Michael Morse, has proven herself in major competitions.
A two-time U.S. National Championship qualifier, Beers finished 15th in the 2010 VISA National Championships all-around competition. She also placed ninth in the floor exercise.
She finished in the top 10 in all four individual events at the 2011 American Classic to end up sixth in the all-around competition.
Alabama coach Sarah Patterson was pleased to add Beers to her team.
“We’ve followed her career for quite a while and we’re very excited to have her join us,” Patterson said.
“Lauren is from the same area that I grew up in and her coach, Daile Van Patten, coached me during summer camps in upstate New York,” added Patterson, a Union-Endicott graduate.
Beers was impressed with the Alabama program when she made her visit.
“The atmosphere on campus was so enthusiastic,” Beers said. “I loved the girls and the coaching staff was so supportive.
“It really felt like they were interested in me as a person as well as a gymnast.”
Home schooled, Beers carries a 4.0 G.P.A., which is a good thing since she plans on a challenging double major of physical education and special education.
Beers is anxious to join the Crimson Tide, which won the NCAA title last season.
“I can’t wait to compete in front of such a large crowd of supportive fans,” Beers said.
