Speaking of FloodsHere’s a look back at downtown Meshoppen during the June 1972 flood that was spawned by Hurricane Agnes. The flooding hit Meshoppen hard after the Meshoppen Creek backed up and spilled into the community. As with the recent flooding, the entire region was ravaged by Hurricane Agnes, which in most communities remains the region’s worst flood. In Meshoppen, however, the river’s recent crest at 44.42 surpassed the Agnes Flood crest of 43.11. Flood stage in Meshoppen is 27 feet. In our flood coverage section this week we have a photo that compares near-identical views of downtown Meshoppen in last week’s flooding and 1972.
