- Mr. Donald R. Smith, age 74, of RR3, Box 165, Meshoppen, PA, (Rushboro), passed away at the Carpenter Care Center in Tunkhannock on Sunday morning, April 28, 2002.
Born in Berwick on July 1, 1927, he was the son of the late Raymond and Melva Smith. Mr. Smith was a graduate of Berwick High School, Class of 1945, after which he graduated from Kutztown State College, Class of 1950. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the Army during WWII, serving stateside in the state of Washington.
Along with his wife, Donald owned and operated a furniture and antique refinishing business in their home in Rushboro.
He was a member of the Retta United Methodist Church, was president of the Old Mill Village Museum in New Milford, a 50 year member of the Berwick Masonic Lodge and a member of the Jersey Hill Cemetery Association.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, the former Alice Tewksbury Smith of Rushboro; a sister, Bernice Fritz of Florida; one niece, Beth Natt of Sugarloaf; two nephews, Tom Fritz of Connecticut and David Fritz of Florida.
Funeral and committal services were held on Wednesday, May 1 at 11 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with Rev. Larry and Rev. Nancy Russell of Retta United Methodist Church and Rev. Kenneth Bitler of Susquehanna and Jackson United Methodist churches officiating. Interment was in the Jersey Hill Cemetery. Family and friends called at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, April 30 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Carl Edward Otis

- Carl Edward Otis, age 81 of Standing Stone, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday evening, April 25, 2002 at the Towanda Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Camptown on Jan. 18, 1921, the youngest son of Harry and Luella VanNess Otis.
He left school at an early age to help his brothers on the family farm after the early death of their father.
He worked for J. V. Taylor, the Wyalusing Livestock Market and owned and operated the family farm until it was sold.
Carl enjoyed visiting friends and gardening.
"The Lord giveth and taketh. Today we lost a loved one whose place in our lives will be cherished memories."
He is survived by his former wife, Laura Cobb Otis of Camptown; sons and daughters-in-law, Max and Claire Otis of Monroeton, Robert Otis of Camptown, Ted and Patty Otis of Camptown, Roderick Otis of Stevensville, Daryl and Joyce Otis of Camptown, Randy and Joan Otis of Lawton; his dear companion, Glenda Taylor and their children, Jeff and Amy of Rummerfield; a special grandson, Doug; grandchildren, Vanessa, Heather, Robbie, Rachelle, Kevin, Brian, Miranda, Derek, Andy, Tim and Tammy; several great-grandchildren; his sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Don Hillis; a brother, Adelbert Otis; a sister-in-law, Helen Otis; several nieces and nephews and special friends, Ronald Yates, Yvonne Robinson and many others.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Thomas Otis; a sister, Emily Kinsley; his brothers, Wilmot and Clifford Otis; two sisters-in-law, Martha P. Otis and Martha L. Otis and a special friend, John Oliver Lynn.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 29 at 2 p.m. in the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing, with the Rev. Elwin Patrick, pastor of the Herrickville Wesleyan Church, officiating.
Interment followed in the Camptown Cemetery.
Friends and family called at the funeral home on Monday afternoon from 12 p.m. until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests the donations be made to the Wysox Ambulance Association, Wysox, PA in Mr. Otiss memory.
Barbara Jane Mast

- Barbara Jane Mast, age 57, of LeRaysville, PA, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2002 surrounded by her family at her home.
Barbara was born on July 3, 1944 in Oakland, MD, a daughter of the late Noah and Lizzie Yoder.
She is survived by her husband, Henry Mast, at home; by nine children, Robert, Leroy, Harvey, Henry, Paul, Raymond, Melissa, Elma, Nancy and by a sister, Annie.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 28 at 1 p.m. in the Valley View Amish Church, LeRaysville, with Bishop David Yoder officiating. Burial followed in the Valley View Cemetery.

Joseph "Frosty" Fries

Joseph L. (Frosty) Fries, age 45, of Dushore, PA, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2002.
Joe was born in Williamsport on March 23, 1957, a son of the late Harry W. and Frances M. Barrett Fries of Dushore. He graduated from the Sullivan County High School and was a co-owner of J&R Body Shop in Mildred.
Joe was a member of St. Basils Church of Dushore and a member of the White Ash Land Association.
Surviving are his spouse, the former Nanette Koes, at home; two daughters, Jamie Lynn Fries of Laceyville and Marissa Nicole Fries, at home; a son, Joshua James Fries, at home; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry, Jr. and Helen Fries of Wysox, Douglas and Patsy Jean Fries of Pineville, LA, Ronald (Fuzzy) Fries of Dushore; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret Ruda, Duluth, GA, Sally and James Murray, Dushore, Patricia and Tim Griffin of Tunkhannock. He was predeceased by twin sons, Matthew J. and Christopher H. Fries in 1991 and an infant sister, Mary Lou Fries in 1944.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, April 29 at 11 a.m. at St. Basils Church with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, his pastor, presiding. Interment was in St. Basils Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore.
Irene Merle Alden Vosburgh

- Irene Merle Alden Vosburgh of Plainfield, NJ, died on Friday, March 1, 2002 at Runnels Specialized Hospital in Berkeley Heights, NJ. She was 94 years old.
Mrs. Vosburgh was born in Meshoppen, and had resided in Conklin, NY for 30 years before moving to Plainfield in 1991.
Irene was a saleswoman for Fowlers in Binghamton, NY for many years, retiring in the early 1970s.
Her husband, Howard Woodfield Vosburgh died on Sept. 9, 1994 at the Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield at the age of 89. He was born in Skinners Eddy and was a salesman for Sears, Roebuck & Co. in Binghamton before retiring in1965.
After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Vosburgh were Antique and Doll Dealers in the eastern area of the United States.
They are survived by grandchildren, Russ A. Allison of Plainfield and Melinda A. Jones of Lake Oswego, OR and two great-grandchildren. A daughter, Barbara Allison and son-in-law, Russell Allison, Sr., predeceased them in death.
A memorial gathering will be held for the couple at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood, NJ on Thursday, April 25 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Donald E. Swartwood

- Donald E. Swartwood, age 61, of Tuscarora Township, Bradford County, PA, passed away at his home on Sunday, April 21, 2002.
Don was born in Binghamton, NY on Oct. 24, 1940, son of the late Herbert L. and Junia Westbrook Swartwood. His parents moved to Phoenix, AZ when Don was a teenager. He completed high school in Phoenix and became a truck driver. He was employed as an over-the-road driver for Roadway Express for many years. He also became a business agent for Teamsters Local #104 in Phoenix.
Don was a member of Teamsters Local #104 in Phoenix.
Surviving are his fiancee, Donna J. Kithcart, at home; three sons, Donald E. Swartwood, Joseph Dewayne Swartwood and Brandon Dion Swartwood, all of Phoenix, AZ; three brothers, James Swartwood, Wolcott, NY, Robert Swartwood and William Swartwood, both of Binghamton, NY; four sisters, Betty Barnum, Binghamton, Beverly Joyce Griffin, Pavilion, NY, Junia Green, Delevan, NY and Theresa Gardner, Binghamton; three grandchildren, Nikki, Nathan and Joshua and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 27 at 11 a.m. at the Spring Hill United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Beverly Davenport, pastor, officiating. A luncheon will follow at the adjoining church community hall.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing.
Bernice Nelson Sheerer

- Bernice Nelson Sheerer, age 91, of Dushore, PA, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2002 at the DarWay Nursing Home in Estella, where she had resided for the past several years.
Bernice Elizabeth Nelson was the third child of the late Judson Theodore and Charlotte Reese Nelson. She was born on Oct. 22, 1910 in Vandling, Susquehanna County, PA.
When she was eleven years old, her mother died suddenly, leaving a family of five young girls in the care of her stern paternal grandmother. Under her guidance, Bernice learned early, the practical lessons of managing a home, as well as the valuable asset of a good education. She graduated at the age of sixteen at the head of her class from the Vandling High School, a member of the Class of 1927.
She married Silas J. Sheerer, Sr. of Greentown on Nov. 26, 1930 and they lived in Forest City for a short time. In 1934, the family moved to Dushore, purchasing the Fred Saxer farm in Cherry Township, where she put all her energies into maintaining a home and raising a family. In addition to being an immaculate housekeeper, she was an excellent baker and a discriminating cook. Always industrious, she taught herself to knit, crochet and embroidermuch of her handiwork is still in existence. She was also an expert seamstresssewing clothes for her entire family, everything from winter coats to prom gowns. At one time, every bed in the house was covered with a handmade quilt.
In her later years and even with the evident effects of Alzheimers disease, she could still correctly spell any word, correct language usage, conjugate Latin verbs and quote algebraic formulas. (Her knowledge of family history would equal any Indian totem pole). She always followed current events and would discuss politics at great lengths, always with a "slight" Republican bias. She treasured her piano (which she played quite well at one time) and always encouraged music in the home. Sing-alongs had the added plus of her lovely alto voice.
She was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and formerly an active member of the Dorcas Society. She served for 34 years on the Cherry Township Board of Elections as minority inspector. She belonged to the Cherry Mills Sewing Circle (circa 1940s) and the Sullivan County Republican Women.
Surviving are four children and spouses, Elsie S. and Stanley A. Bohensky, Dushore, Ruth S. and Peter Zolnerwich, Wichita Falls, TX, Ms. Carolyn (Betsy) Sheerer, Dushore and Silas James (Jim) Sheerer, Jr. of Painted Post, NY; nine grandchildren, Stanley Leo Bohensky and Karen Bohensky McDonald, Dushore; Angela Bohensky Lee, Reading; Andrew James Bohensky, Chambersburg; Patricia Coleman Dunlap, Longmont, CO; David Mark Coleman, Middletown, RI; Silas James Sheerer, III, Sandra Frances Sheerer and Paul Stanley Sheerer, Corning and Painted Post, NY; 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Sheerer was preceded in death by her husband, Silas J. Sheerer, Sr. on June 7, 1968; an infant brother, Irving and four sisters, Hazel Nelson Allen, Jennie Nelson Standish, Doris Nelson Black and Marion Nelson Allen.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at Zion Chapel, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Eddie A. Nilsen, her pastor, officiating. Interment will take place at Old Zion Cemetery, Dushore.

Sharon Boice Serbel

- Sharon Boice Serbel, 55, of Lehman Township, PA died on Saturday, April 20, 2002 at home.
Born in Binghamton, NY on March 1, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Oliver and Marie (Reed) Boice. She attended Tunkhannock High School and Empire Beauty Academy. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Luzerne, a member of the Lake Lehman Football Booster Club and a Cheerleader Mom.
Surviving are her husband, Steve; stepmother, Betty Boice; daughters, Crista Oeller of Florida, Heidi Scholz of Dallas; a son, John Scholz of Mehoopany; stepsons, Michael Serbel of Lehighton, Stephen Serbel of Vero Beach, FL; sister, Diane Morrison of Stowell; brother, Stephen Boice of Sugar Run; stepsisters, Amy Lott of Meshoppen, Toni Hutcheson, Georgia, Susan Champion of Alabama; five grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held on Wednesday, April 24 at 9 a.m. from the Betz-Jastremski Funeral Home, Inc., 568 Bennett St., Luzerne, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. from Holy Family Parish in St. Anns Church with Rev. David Cappelloni, officiating. Friends may call on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
John A. Kettelberger, Sr.

- John A. Kettelberger, Sr., age 72, of Laporte, PA and Port St. Lucie, FL, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at the Port St. Lucie Medical Center, Port St. Lucie, FL.
John was born in Philadelphia on Aug. 22, 1929, a son of the late August and Ida Marie Trautwein Kettelberger. He graduated from a Philadelphia High School and married the former Loretta M. Welsh of Philadelphia on Oct. 21, 1950. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in October of 2000 at Sacred Heart Church in Laporte.
John founded and built Nor-Lin Auto Parts in Linthicum, MD in 1969 and owned and operated it until his retirement. He and Loretta moved to Laporte as full-time residents in 1977. In retirement, John built several rental properties and also the Laporte Mini Storage facility on U.S. Route 220 in Laporte, which he currently operated. John and Loretta spent their winters at Port St. Lucie, FL for the past several years.
John was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Laporte. He joined Camp Westdon in Nordmont in 1950 and served as its president for many years. The camp celebrated its 60th anniversary of incorporation in December of 2000. John was also a member of the Moose, Elks and Masons and a social member of Sonestown Post #601 American Legion.
Surviving are his spouse, Loretta, at home; two sons and daughter-in-law, Rev. John A. Kettelberger, Jr., C.M., Niagara University, NY, Michael and Cheryl Kettelberger, Pasadena, MD; three daughters and sons-in-law, Frances and David Schmidt, Ellicott City, MD, Dr. Denise Kettelberger and Clarence Smith, Seattle, WA, Jane and Donald Fowler, Linthicum, MD; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Peggy Kettelberger, Southampton; eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The very largely attended Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, April 22 at Sacred Heart Church, Laporte with the Rev. John A. Kettelberger, Jr., C.M., his son, presiding and concelebrants: Rev. Michael B. Harris, Pastor; Rev. Joseph Hubbert, C.M.; Rev. Art Kolinsky, C.M.; Rev. Stephen Grozio, C.M. Rev. charles Strollo, C.M.; Rev. John Timlin, C.M.; Rev. William Shelgon, C.M.; Rev. Michael Carroll, C.M.; Rev. Kevin Creagh, C.M.; Rev. Stephen Cantwell, C.M. and the Rev. Francis Maguire, C.M. Brother Peter Campbell, C.M. and Brother Carmen Ciardullo, C.M. were in attendance. Interment was in the adjoining parish cemetery.

Friends called at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, on Sunday, April 21 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. There was a Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Evelyn F. Higley

- Evelyn F. Higley, age 72, of Benton, PA, formerly of Forksville, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2002 at the home of her son.
She was born on Jan. 23, 1930 in Sayre, a daughter of David and Edith Treaster Vough. In 1947, she graduated from Estella High School.
Evelyn was a lifetime resident of the Sullivan County area.
On Jan. 25, 1948, Evelyn married Donald Ralph Higley in Towanda.
She was a member of St. Pauls United Church of Christ in Overton. Her other memberships included the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce where she was the first woman to serve; the Loyalsock Watershed Association and the Pennsylvania Campground Association.
She enjoyed time spent doing crossword puzzles, watching birds and traveling.
Mr. and Mrs. Higley owned and operated Higley Campground for many years, and she recently owned and operated a restaurant in Benton.
On July 19, 1971, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald.
She left surviving seven children and their spouses: Linda R. and William R. Massengale of Utah, Jack and Karen Higley of Raymond, ME, Dottie Ann and James Pardoe of Forksville, Ronald C. and Linda L. Higley of Honeoye, NY, Philip W. Higley of Dushore, Michael D. Higley of New Albany, Mitchell Dean and Penny Higley of Dushore; two brothers, Harvey Vough of Dushore and Victor Vough of Athens; a stepmother, Francis Reed Vough of Dushore; stepbrother, Robert Reed of Sayre; 21 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Rohe of Overton and a granddaughter, Toni Michelle Higley.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 22 at 11 a.m. in St. Pauls United Church of Christ in Overton with the Rev. Robert W. Martin, her pastor, officiating.
Interment followed in the Forksville Cemetery, Forksville.
Friends and family called on Sunday evening, April 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore, and on Monday at St. Pauls United Church of Christ from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Sullivan County Cancer Society or the Sullivan County Library. She loved birds and nature.
Patricia "Trish" Isabel Dionne

- Patricia "Trish" Isabel Dionne, age 45, wife of James Keister of Colorado, passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at St. Anthonys Hospital in Denver, CO. She was formerly of Laceyville.
Born Sept. 14, 1957, she was the daughter of the late Al and Isebel Dionne of Laceyville. Trish was a 1974 graduate of Wyalusing Valley Junior-Senior High School and was employed by USA Wrestling. Trish loved to go camping, fishing and to play the slot machines in Cripple Creek. These were just a few things that she loved to do. She had so many close friends, along with the wrestlers that she worked with, that are going to miss her.
She was a loving spouse and mother, not able to see her grandchildren she loved so much.
Surviving are her husband, James Keister of Colorado; two sons, Daryl L. Miller, Jr. of Colorado, Kris D. Miller, along with friend, Sara of Pittsburgh; her only daughter, Amy L. Miller and fiance, Daniel S. Merritt of Wyalusing. Trish had three grandchildren, Brooke Merritt and Dylan Merritt, son and daughter of Amy and Daniel, and Brittany Merritt, daughter of Daniel; three half-brothers, Richard Kramp and family, Bob Kramp and family and Charles Kramp and family, all of Ohio; several nieces and nephews.
The memorial services were held in Colorado Springs, CO.
Patricia Dionne, a mother, friend and grandmother, will be greatly missed by her loved ones and so many close friends, but will never be forgotten.
Naomi E. J. Davis

- Mrs. Naomi E. J. Davis, age 68, of RR1, Box 250, Mehoopany, PA (Scottsville Road), passed away at the Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock on Monday evening, April 22, 2002.
Born in Philadelphia on Nov. 24, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Robert F. and Helen S. Stevens Elliott. She was the wife of the late Francis A. Jayne, who passed away in1978.
Naomi was a graduate of the Laceyville High School. She was employed for several years at Ames Department Store in Tunkhannock until ill health forced her retirement.
In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her family. She also enjoyed flea markets, Native American Pow-Wows and trips to Atlantic City.
She is survived by her second husband, Frederick J. Davis, to whom she had been married for 20 years; two sons, James Jayne of Texas and Wyatt Jayne of Harveys Lake; three daughters, Frances (Kay) Gregory of Lake Winola, Joyce Barber of Tunkhannock and Theresa Milbrodt of Noxen; two stepsons, Frederick Davis, Jr. of Mt. Pocono and Eddie Davis of Laceyville; two stepdaughters, Bettie Adams of Weimer, TX and Joy LeAnn Davis of Mt. Pocono; a brother, Robert J. Elliott of Eustis, FL; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; also several aunts, nieces and nephews. Besides her first husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Alvin R. Jayne, who passed away in 2000; four grandchildren, Becky Barber, 1995, Joey Jayne, 1982, Robert F. Jayne, 1987 and Emmett Milbrodt; a step-grandson, Danny Davis in 1995.
In memory of Mrs. Davis, a Native American Ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 26 at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, with a chief of the Native American Council, officiating. Interment will be in North Flat Cemetery, Laceyville. Friends and family may call at the funeral home on Thursday, April 25 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

- Charles A. Brace, 83, Montrose, PA, died on Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at Endless Mountains Health System. Born Feb. 6, 1919, he was the son of the late William and Ella Brace. His wife, Nettie Alberta (Cook) Brace predeceased him.
He worked for IBM and Allied Cleaning Corp. for 30 years.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Elva and Bob Stanton of West Virginia, Beverly Ellinger of Pennsburg, Nancy of Maryland, Shirley and Donald Morairty, Conklin, NY, Christine and Anthony Mariongelli, Binghamton, NY, Tressa and Richard Hitchcock, Birchardville, Clara and Randy Crawford, Dallas; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Joan Brace, Houston, TX, Calvin and Melissa Brace, Dimock, Corwin and Jackie Brace, Springville, Allen and Donna Brace, Nicholson, Larry and Dena Brace, Laurel Lake, Rodney and Stephanie Brace, Rush; 32 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a brother, William Brace, Dallas; a sister, Caroline Gardner, Florida; nieces and nephews.
Services were held on Monday, April 22 at 10 a.m. at the Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., 74 Church St., Montrose.
The family received friends on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Jody Eugene "Jodster" Sullivan

- Jody Eugene "Jodster" Sullivan, age 25, of Monroeton RR2, Monroe Twp., PA, died on Friday morning, April 12, 2002 as the result of a motor vehicle accident in North Towanda Township.
Born Sept. 21, 1976 in Towanda, he was a son of Karen Heath Sullivan, Robert Sullivan and Donald Johnson, Sr.
In earlier years, Jodey participated in Towanda Little League, Pee Wee Football and the Towanda Rifle Club.
Jodey was a graduate of Towanda High School, Class of 1996.
He was formerly employed by E. I. DuPont in North Towanda and was presently employed by Osram Sylvania in Towanda.
Jodey enjoyed spending time with his friends, hunting, fishing, the outdoors and big trucks. He will be deeply missed by his family and many good friends.
Surviving are his parents, Karen and Robert Sullivan of North Towanda and Donald Johnson, Sr. and his friend, Lori Tuttle of French Asylum; four brothers, Jason Sullivan of Ulster, Jonathon Johnson of Williamsport, Donald Johnson, Jr. of Athens, Daniel Johnson of French Asylum; his fiancee and the love of his life, Jodi Taylor of Towanda RR2; his grandmother, Mary Louise Sullivan of Towanda RR1; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral service was held on Monday, April 15 at 11 a.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Allen Hulslander, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Towanda, officiating.
Interment was in the Hillcrest Cemetery, New Albany.
The family received friends on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Miller "Rosey" Rosendale

- Miller "Rosey" Rosendale, age 79, of his beloved Montrose, PA, died on Thursday, April 11, 2002 at his residence. Born March 25, 1923 in Montrose, he was the son of the late Allan H. and Mary Mollie (Miller) Rosendale. His wife, Shirley (Dodge) Rosendale died in 1992.
A 1942 graduate of Montrose High School, he served his country in WWII with the U.S. Navy and Marines in the Philippines. He was very proud to be a citizen of Montrose and also the times spent at the family cottage at Elk Lake and the Elk Lake Regatta during his younger years.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Montrose.
Rosey had a great love for the outdoors and woods. A timber cursor and heavy equipment operator, he worked for local companies including Irving Loomis & Sons, Montrose; the Pennsylvania Game Commission; the present Cornerstone Forest Products in Kingsley and other logging companies.
Additionally, he was a member of VFW, Ayres-Stone Post #5642, Montrose, Warren Lodge #240 F&AM, Montrose and Camp Comfort hunting camp, Middletown Township, Susquehanna County.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela D. and Richard Griffis of Tunkhannock, Suzanne R. and David Breese, Montrose; grandchildren, Dana Iannielli, Elizabeth Griffis, Amy Breese; sister, Marilyn Richards of San Antonio, TX; sisters-in-law, Mildred Dodge, Wyalusing, Virginia Smith, Tequesta, FL; nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his wife and parents, a brother, Allan Rosendale, Jr., predeceased him.
Services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 14 at the First Presbyterian Church of Montrose, 71 Church St., Montrose.

- Mrs. Nellie M. Owen, age 91, of the Meadowview Senior Living Center, Montrose, PA, formerly of Spring Hill, passed away on Tuesday morning, April 16, 2002 at the Meadowview Senior Living Center where she has been a resident for the last seven years.
Born in Laceyville, on Nov. 7, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Israel and Lulu Brown Dickinson. She was the wife of the late A. Floyd Owen, who passed away in 1964. Mr. and Mrs. Owen were married for 32 years.
Mrs. Owen was a graduate of the Laceyville High School. After getting married, she was a housewife and homemaker for her husband and family.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Gary Sechrist of Montrose, Linda and Richard Voda of Silvara; five sons and daughters-in-law, Francis and Marie Owen of Laceyville, LaVerne Owen of Rome, James Owen of Mehoopany, Harry Owen of Tunkhannock and Daryle (Woody) and Carol Owen of Silvara; a sister, Mrs. Jennette Clark of Towanda; a brother, Howard Dickinson of Towanda; 26 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by four sons, three daughters and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 19 at 11 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, with Rev. William Nelson, retired Methodist minister, officiating. - Mrs. Betty Louise Milarta, age 64, of Wyalusing, PA, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre.
Betty was born in Owego, NY, on March 6, 1938, a daughter of the late Lester and Nancy Wheeler Walters. She graduated from the Wyalusing High School, a member of the Class of 1956. She married Michael R. Milarta of Wyalusing on Oct. 26, 1969.
Betty worked as a bookkeeper for the former Vandervort Mills in Laceyville and the Wyalusing National Bank and Kintner Equipment Company of Wyalusing. She also helped many families as a babysitter for over 15 years until her health deteriorated. She really loved babysitting and considered all she cared for as if they were her own children.
A loving spouse, mother and grandmother, she truly loved attending the Camptown Community Church. After her health failed, she enjoyed reading and watching movies and was an avid New York Yankees baseball fan.
Surviving are her spouse, Michael, at home; three daughters and son-in-law, Wanda and Joseph Matuszak, Fleetwood, Donna Shook, Reading, Lindsey Milarta, Chicago, IL; special family friends, Kim, Raul, Maegan, Aaron and Adam Azpiazu, Wyalusing; granddaughter, Kayla Jo Matuszak; brothers and sister-in-law, Daniel and Lynette Walters, Stevensville, David Walters, Mehoopany; sisters, Beverly Walters, Laporte, Helen Jackson, Great Falls, MT; several nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Angela Dawn Milarta in Aug. of 1973; a brother, Robert Walters and sister, Jean Stone.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 13 at 12 noon at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Helen Learn, her pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Wyalusing Cemetery.

- Elizabeth Kunkle, 97, of Wyalusing, PA, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2002 at the Skilled Nursing Unit in Towanda.
She was born on April 7, 1905 in Hollenback, Bradford County, a daughter of the late Charles and Eva Barnhart.
In 1978, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, the late Herbert Kunkle.
She was a lifetime resident of the Wyalusing area and was a member of the Wyalusing United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her children and spouses: Marion and Albert Stewart of Mertstown, Doris and Calvin Shaffer of Wyalusing, Veda Woodruff of Wyalusing and Vera and George Dean of Mesquite, TX; a sister, Viva Neese of San Diego, CA; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, David, Lucretia, Florence, John and Cecil.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 15 at 11 a.m. in the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing, with the Rev. Beverly Davenport, pastor, officiating.
Interment followed in the Wyalusing Cemetery.
Friends and family called at the funeral home on Monday at 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

- Nathan Lawrence "Nate" Johnson, 21, of Towanda RR4, Asylum Township, PA, died on Friday morning, April 12, 2002 as the result of a motor vehicle accident in North Towanda Township.
Born Jan. 25, 1981 in Asylum, he was a son of Anthony and Theresa Rohe Johnson.
Nate was a graduate of Towanda High School, Class of 1999, where he was a member of the wrestling team.
Nate was employed by Osram Sylvania in Towanda.
He was a member of the Towanda Gun Club Dart League and Take Me Higher.
Nate enjoyed hunting, fishing and big trucks. He will be greatly missed by his family and many close friends.
Surviving are his parents, Anthony and Theresa Johnson of Towanda RR4; a brother, Tony A. Johnson of Rummerfield; a sister, Amanda F. Johnson of Phoenixville; maternal grandparents, Geraldine Sick Rohe of Towanda, Lawrence V. Rohe of Dushore; paternal grandparents, Ronald and Doris Whitson, Elmira, NY and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family received friends on Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda.

Donald Burr Glosenger

- Donald Burr Glosenger, 80, 222 Chestnut St., Athens, PA, formerly of Sayre, passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at home after an extended illness.
Born in Sayre, June 23, 1921, the son of Andrew and Freda Struhm Glosenger, he was a 1939 graduate of Sayre High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps (later in the U.S. Air Force) during World War II at Greater Ash Field in England as an airplane mechanic of B17s. He retired from G.E. Rail Car in Sayre after 20 years.
He was a member of the Sayre Christian Church, a devoted choir member and served as deacon and trustee over the years. He was also a member of the Skiff Bower Post #1536 VFW of Sayre.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marsha Ann and Michael Daly of Suwanee, GA; a son, Gary Allen Glosenger, of Athens; sisters and brothers-in-law, Edna and John Ryck, Sayre, Helen and Ralph Kelley of Sayre and Mary and Donald Campbell of Cayuta, NY; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Sally Glosenger of Horseheads, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife, M. Geraldine Glosenger in 1994 and his brothers, Max, Rex and Carl Glosenger and one sister, Ruth Lamb.
Family and friends may call Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lowery Funeral Home, 225 South Main St., Athens.

- Melissa "Missy" Saxon Chenot, age 30, wife of Andre P. Chenot of Towanda RR3, North Towanda Township, PA, died on Friday morning, April 12, 2002 as the result of a motor vehicle accident in North Towanda Township.
Born May 12, 1971 in Sayre, she was a daughter of Joel and Janet Rought Saxon. Melissa was a graduate of Wyalusing Valley High School, Class of 1989, and was employed by Osram Sylvania in Towanda. Melissa loved children and was taking home-schooling in preparation for a child day care center. She enjoyed playing softball and was a pitcher during high school. In later years she coached Little League and played in adult softball leagues. She loved the outdoors, family vacations and gardening. She also loved family gatherings at her home and being with her many friends.
Surviving are her husband, Andre P. Chenot at home; her mother, Janet Rought Saxon of Towanda; her father, Joel Saxon of Wyalusing; a sister and brother-in-law, Stacey and David Brown of Camptown; a brother, Michael Saxon and his fiancee, Kathy Korfmann of Wyalusing; brother, Joel Saxon of Towanda; maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Rought of Towanda; mother-in-law and father-in-law, LaVaughn and Charles Chenot, II of Towanda RR3; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Charles, III and Lynne Chenot of New Bloomfield, Catherine Chenot of Rochester, NY, Charlotte and Douglas Banghart of Roanoke, VA; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Harry Rought and grandmother, Marjorie McElwee.

Kathryn DeWolf Ackerman

- Kathryn DeWolf Ackerman, age 85, daughter of the late Silas and Emma Poole DeWolf of Jenningsville, PA, passed away at the Carpenter Care Center in Tunkhannock on Wednesday, April 10, 2002. She has been living in North Plainfield, NJ over fifty years. Since last July, she returned to Tunkhannock, due to illness. Her husband, the late John Ackerman, predeceased her in 1990.
Surviving family includes her sister, Millicent Willson, now residing in Wyalusing; brothers, George of Rahway, NJ, Walter of Lock Haven and Don of South Auburn; nephews, Tim DeWolf of Jenningsville, Walter DeWolf, Jr., Glenmoore, Jim DeWolfe of Camillus, NY and Bryan DeWolfe of Lincoln Park, NJ; two nieces, Kathy Foltz of Palmyra and Ruth Ann Nace of Jenningsville; a cousin, Clarence DeWolf of Russell Hill and many close friends from in and around the North Plainfield, NJ area where she lived so many years. Besides her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Harold of Jenningsville, who passed away in 1995.
Kathryn was born in Jenningsville on Nov. 18, 1916, was baptized and was a member of the Jenningsville Methodist Church, where she was very active in the Sunday School and youth groups.
She graduated from the Laceyville High School in 1933. Later she attended Mansfield Teachers College where she earned her B/S degree in teaching. The next number of years was spent teaching in numerous schools throughout Wyoming County. Upon moving to North Plainfield, her position was with the New Jersey State Educational School System, where she spent the next 14 years. Upon retiring, she and her late husband, John, enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the U.S., Canada and many parts of Europe. She also enjoyed working in her flower gardens.
Despite her busy schedule, she found time to be active in other groups including Eastern Star, D.A.R., P.T.A., U.M.W. and held offices in her church and also served in the district level of the Methodist Church in North New Jersey.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. from the Jenningsville United Methodist Church with Rev. Ann Blair officiating. Interment was in the Vaughn Cemetery in Mehoopany. Family and friends called at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville on Friday, April 12 from 2 to 4 p.m., also at the Jenningsville Church on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Alice Marie Wood

- Alice Marie Wood, age 80, of Terry Township, Wyalusing RR2, PA, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2002 at Memorial Hospital in Towanda.
She was born on Nov. 26, 1921, in Honesdale, a daughter of the late James and Elsie Stegner.
On Feb. 4, 1939, Alice married Alva G. Wood. Alice and Alva celebrated 63 years of marriage.
She and her husband were residents of the Wyalusing area since 1948.
Alice enjoyed spending time watching birds and enjoyed flowers.
She left surviving her husband, Alva G. Wood, at home; three sons and their wives, Alva "Bucky" Wood of Terrytown, Roger and Mary Wood of Sugar Run and David and Connie Wood of Terrytown; a brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Augusta Stegner of Honesdale; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Hilda Wood; sisters, Neddie, Mable, Ellen and Ethel and brothers, Walt, Bill and Jessie.

John (Jack) H. VanGorden

- John (Jack) H. VanGorden, 102, died peacefully at the Elizabeth Church Manor in Binghamton, NY on Sunday, April 7, 2002.
Born May 25, 1899, Jack was the oldest son of Grant G. and Grace Smith VanGorden. He was a 1916 graduate of Meshoppen High School and a 1921 graduate of Bliss Electrical School, now part of Montgomery College in Washington, DC.
His wife of 77 years, Emma and their only son, John H., Jr. predeceased him.
Mr. VanGorden was employed by the IBM Corporation for 42 years, holding numerous executive positions. As the Divisional National Service Manager, Jack traveled to every state in the United States in a one year period.
He was a member of Binghamton Lodge #177 F&AM, Binghamton Chapter No. 139, Royal Arch Masons, Binghamton Council No. 24, Royal and Select Masters and Malta Commandery No. 21, Knights Templar. Other Masonic affiliations included the Royal Order of Scotland and the Kalurah Temple AAONMS Shrine.
In 1957, Jack received the 33rd degree from the Supreme Council. He was both an active and meritorious member of the Supreme Council. He was a recipient of the Gourgas Medal. The library at the Masonic Museum of Our National Heritage in Lexington, MS was constructed and named in Jacks honor.
A former trustee of Alfred University, Keuka College and Houghton College, he also supported Broome Community College and SUNY Binghamton. He served on many boards of directors, remaining active with the United Methodist Homes for the Aging of the Wyoming Conference. Jack resided at the United Methodist Home for the Aging for 31 years.
Mr. VanGorden was a member of the Sarah Jane Johnson United Methodist Church and served on many committees, including the trustees for several years. He was the author of nine books of various subjects. Jack took great pride in his philanthropic endeavors as he anonymously supported several charities and needy individuals.
Funeral and committal services will be held Friday, April 12 at 10 a.m. at the Sarah Jane Johnson United Methodist Church, 308 Main St., Johnson City, NY, with his pastor, Rev. Dr. Daniel Ling, officiating. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Barber Memorial Home, Inc., 428 Main St., Johnson City. - Glenn W. Shimer, 72, of Birchardville, PA, died on Saturday, April 6, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Scranton. Born Sept. 27, 1929 in Birchardville, he was the son of William and Lovica (Burr) Shimer. Last June 21, he celebrated 50 years of marriage to the former L. Marie Graham, who survives.
A dairy farmer, he also worked 18 years for the former Beech Manufacturing in Montrose.
He was a member of the Rushville Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Melvin and Bonnie Shimer, Roger and Sharon Shimer, all of Birchardville; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Floyd A. Shimer, of Birchardville; sisters, Sarah Wells of Endicott, NY, Doris Nesmith of Deerfield Beach, FL, Greta Bennett Defuniak of Srings, FL and nieces and nephews.

Marion J. Nagle

- Mrs. Marion J. Nagle, age 91, of RR2, Laceyville, PA (Indian Hill), passed away Tuesday evening, April 9, 2002 at the Carpenter Care Center in Tunkhannock, where she had been a resident for the last three months.
Born in Pittston on Nov. 8, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Jennetta Kuhn Bartlett. Mrs. Nagle was the wife of the late Edward Havard, who passed away in 1963, and also the wife of the late Carl Nagle, who passed away in 1995.
In her earlier years, she was a bookkeeper for the Stegmaier Brewing Co. in Wilkes-Barre, after which she and her first husband, Edward Havard, owned and operated the Skinners Eddy Hotel in Laceyville for 25 years, before selling the business in the early 1970s.
She is survived by a grandson and his wife, Edward and Diana Havard of Laceyville; a granddaughter and her husband, Kelly and Fred Purmort of Jasper, GA; three great-grandchildren, Katie Havard, James Havard and Nicholas Havard, all of Laceyville. Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard L. Havard, who passed away in 1966, and a sister, Grace Biggs, who passed away in 1988.
Funeral and committal services will be held on Friday, April 12 at 11 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, with Rev. Dave Faulkner of the Braintrim Baptist Church in Laceyville officiating. Interment will be in the Vine St. Cemetery in Pittston.

Katherine R. Lattimer

- Mrs. Katherine R. Lattimer, age 93, of Camptown, PA, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2002 at the Carpenter Care Center, Tunkhannock, where she had resided for the past five months.
Kate was born in Sayre, a daughter of the late James L. and Martha Bunnell Robbins. She was raised by her paternal grandmother, Catharine Bunnell Robbins as her mother passed away when Kate was 20 months old. She attended school in Sayre. Kate was married to Harold C. Lattimer of Wilkes-Barre at Harolds parents home in Camptown on Nov. 29, 1930. They resided in Luzerne for eight years before moving to Lime Hill and later to Stony Point, Herrickville. They enjoyed 58 years of marriage until his passing on Feb. 4, 1989. She moved to Homets Ferry after Harolds death to be near her daughter.
Kate and Harold ran a gas station in Camptown for several years. She also worked in the dress factories located by McCartys in Wyalusing and in Camptown. She was a great saleswoman and sold Avon products for many years.
Kate was a loving and caring spouse, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold C., Jr. and Mary Lattimer, Herndon, VA, Richard P. and Norma Lattimer, Oley; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Richard Neiley, Homets Ferry and Etta and Howard Covey, Fort Worth, TX; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ralph (Peg) Lattimer, Mercur Hill, Wysox; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Paron W. (Perry) Robbins and three sisters, Ruth E. Smith, Leila E. Zurn and Florence J. Lutz and an infant grandson, Donald Lattimer.
Funeral services will be held Thursday (today), April 11 at 11 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Barry R. Ballard, pastor of the Wyalusing Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Camptown Cemetery.

- Neoma Ruth Bradshaw, age 75, of Laporte, PA, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2002 at The Highlands in Laporte.
Ruth was born in Midland, TX on March 3, 1927, a daughter of the late Leo Noel and Jane Constance Carter Snoddy. She graduated from high school in Midland. She married John Barrows (Barry) Bradshaw, a long-time summer resident of Laporte, in Houston, TX on April 15, 1958. She and Barry, a petroleum executive, resided in Houston and later in San Rafael, CA where Ruth was very active with Mary Kay Cosmetics. Barry predeceased her on Sept. 1, 1992 and Ruth retired to Laporte in 1993.
She was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Laporte.
Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Michael J. and Karen Bradshaw, San Jose, CA, Kim and Teresa Bradshaw, Alto, TX and Brett C. and Joan Bradshaw, Ottsville; a daughter, Constance Olivia Bradshaw, Cotati, CA; a brother, Jim LaRue, West Point, TX; a sister-in-law, Katherine Jean (Kit) Bradshaw, New York, NY; grandchildren, Chad, Gregory, Michael, Stephen, Tiffany and Travis and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 9 at 11 a.m. at the Laporte Community Church, formerly St. Johns Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Robert W. Brown, pastor of the Laporte United Methodist Church, presiding. Interment was in the Mountain Ash Cemetery, Laporte.
Friends called at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, on Monday, April 8 from 7 to 9 p.m.

- Rose G. Pipher, age 81, of Talmadge Hill Road, Waverly, NY, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2002 at the Bradford County Manor.
Rose was born on May 26, 1920 in Waverly, the daughter of the late Arthur Mandeville and Lillian and Roger Crawford. For many years, Rose and her husband, Harry owned and operated the family farm on Talmadge Hill Road. Rose enjoyed spending time on the farm and had a great love and passion for raising horses. She also enjoyed spending time in her garden, reading and being surrounded by her family. Her family especially treasured her beautiful gift for horse paintings and drawings.
Rose is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen and Edward Gublo, Millport, NY, Linda and Roger Vaughn, who were her caregivers prior to her brief stay at Bradford County Manor; Donna Walker, Nancy and Timothy Mullen, all of Waverly; her sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Joyce Pipher, Glenn Pipher, all of Waverly, Calvin and Sharon Pipher of Athens; a brother, Ross "Rusty" Mandeville, Waverly; 25 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 58 years, Harry Pipher on April 5, 1999; a daughter, Ann Pipher on Dec. 9, 1947 and brothers, Walter, Donald and Joseph Mandeville.
Funeral services and a celebration of Roses life will be held on Thursday, April 4 at 11 a.m. at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols, NY, with Pastor Bruce J. Vanderpool.
Interment will follow in the family plot in the Chemung Cemetery.
A period of visitation and sharing memories was held on Wednesday from 7 to 9 at the funeral home and will be held on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
