Robert Rosencrance
Dec. 1, 2001

Mr. Robert Rosencrance, Sr., age 82, of RR2, Box 2960, Laceyville, PA (North Flat), passed away at the Highlands in Laporte early Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001.

Born in Laceyville on April 6, 1919, he was the son of the late Ira and Mattie Heberling Rosencrance.

Mr. Rosencrance was a graduate of Laceyville High School, Class of 1936.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served with the 88th Infantry Division in Italy during World War II, from 1945 until 1946. He was employed for many years as a salesman for Vandervort Mills in Laceyville until its closure in the mid-1970s. He later was employed by the Laceyville Agway until his retirement in 1981.

Mr. Rosencrance was a member of the Rought-Hall American Legion Post #510 of Black Walnut.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Anita Harrison; a daughter, Ellen Cornell of Laceyville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert, Jr. and Sandy Rosencrance of Woodstock, GA, Alan and Susan Rosencrance of New Market, MD and Albert and Wen Rosencrance of Great Falls, VA; four grandsons, two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Marie Foote and three brothers, Francis Rosencrance, Boyd Rosencrance and Lawrence Rosencrance.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville with Rev. Charles Bishop, of the Elk Lake Community Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Lacey St. Cemetery, Laceyville.

Family and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Graveside military services will be conducted by members of the Rought-Hall Post 510, American Legion and the VFW Endless Mountains Post #3583.

Wheaton D. Fassett, Sr.
Dec. 3, 2001
Mr. Wheaton D. Fassett, Sr., age 73, of Valley Crest Nursing Center, Wilkes-Barre, formerly of Jenningsville, PA, passed away on Monday afternoon, Dec. 3, 2001 at the Valley Crest Nursing Center. Mr. Fassett had been a resident of the center for the last 15 years.

He was born in Jenningsville on Oct. 14, 1928, the son of the late David Wheaton and Hattie Bronson Fassett. For most of his life, he was a self-employed carpenter in the Wyoming County area.

Surviving are a daughter, Cathy Hamner of Kirkwood, NY; four sons, Allen Fassett of Laceyville, Mark Fassett of Harpursville, NY, Wheaton Fassett, Jr. and Timothy Fassett, both of Mehoopany; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Wayne David Fassett and Stephen Fassett.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday morning, Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. from the Forkston Cemetery in Forkston, with Pastor Doug Mills of the Lovelton Bible Church, officiating.

Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville.


Clifford E. Palmer
Dec. 5, 2001
Clifford E. Palmer, age 91, of DarWay Nursing Home in Estella, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001 at Towanda Memorial Hospital after an illness. He was a former resident of Lynn, PA.

Born on June 23, 1910 in Rush, he was a son of the late Harry and Ethel Garrison Palmer.

He was married to Helen Lyman, who predeceased him on Feb. 12, 1994.

He was employed as a milk tester and dairy farmer.

A graduate of Springville High School, he also attended Delhi Agricultural College.

Mr. Palmer was a former member of the Lynn Independent Order of Odd Fellows, D.H.I.A. and Dairy Tester’s Association. He also belonged to the Springville Vol. Fire Co.

Survivors include a daughter, Gertrude Gunnoe, Norfolk, MS; four sons, Clifford, DarWay Nursing Home, Forksville, A. Lyman and Fay, Springville, Rev. Stephen of Flanders, NJ; a sister, Mrs. Jean Bunnell of Springville; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchild-ren; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude and three brothers, Bruce, Clifton and Theron.

Services will be held at Lynn Community Church on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Edwin Simmons of the Lemon United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will be in Lynn Cemetery.

Friends and family may call one hour prior to the services at the church.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock.

Albert Woznicki
Dec. 5, 2001
Albert Woznicki, age 66, of 1300 Ebb Tide Ave., Merritt Island, FL 32952 passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001 at his home following a brief illness.

Albert was born in Sayre, March 20, 1935, a son of the late Frank and Susan Bodnar Woznicki. He attended local schools in Wyalusing and served in the U. S. Coast Guard in the Korean Conflict. He worked for many years on construction as a union iron worker.

Albert and his spouse, the former Betsy Hodgson, resided in Meshoppen for many years until retiring to Florida in 1998.

Albert was a member of the Wyalusing Post #534 American Legion and a member of the Ironworkers Union of Elmira, NY.

Surviving are his spouse, Betsy, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Leslie Woznicki, Herrickville, Jim and Angie Furman, Tunkhannock; five daughters and sons-in-law, Tracy Woznicki and Lynn Christie, both of Manchester, CT, Kim and David Byrnes, Lake Carey, Lisa and Rick Holovacko, Tunkhannock, and Shelly Simmers, Tunkhannock; a brother, Carl Woznicki, Athens, TN; sisters and brother-in-law, Louise Wildrick and Betty Marshall, both of Wyalusing and Leona and Keith Dunklee of Laurel, MD; a sister-in-law, Louise Woznicki of Wyalusing; 15 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Francis J. Woznicki on Dec. 23, 1990.

A Celebration of Life Service was held on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with Rev. Beverly Davenport officiating.

Friends called at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6:30 p.m. until the time of the service.

Members of Wyalusing Post #534 American Legion passed in review at 7 p.m.

Twylet Valeria Fulkerson Bloom
Dec. 7, 2001
Twylet Valeria Fulkerson Bloom, 85, went home to be with her good Lord on Dec. 7, 2001.

Born and reared in Ginter, PA, she was the middle daughter of Nancy Ada (Hickok) and John Vincent Fulkerson. She was also a descendant from the fifth generation of the Scots-Irish couple, John Henry and Elizabeth McBride Henry of County Down, Ireland.

After grade school, she moved with her parents into Curwensville where she lost her mama at a young age.

Twylet married Kermit O. Bloom in October, 1938 and they made their home on the Bloomington-Glen Richey Highway.

Mother of 12 children herself, she loved every one of them and loved life itself, as well. In her younger years, while rearing her own brood, she did housecleaning and provided child care for other families in the Curwensville area. She loved cooking and preserving, being with friends and watching her children grow up.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two older sisters, two brothers, her husband, three daughters, a son and two grandsons.

She is survived by sisters, Violet McClinsey in the Dubois Nursing Home and Wava Wilt of Curwensville RR; two sisters-in-law; eight children and their spouses, including Jean (Bloom) and Luke Vande Mark of Stevensville; 26 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home in Curwensville with Rev. William Gibson officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Olanta RD.

The family suggests that contributions in Twylet’s memory be made to the American Lung Association, Northwest Chapter, 352 W. 8th St., Erie, PA 16502.
Roger M. Moore
Dec. 7, 2001
Roger M. Moore, 41, died on Friday, Dec. 7, 2001 in Rush Township, as a result of a hunting accident. Born Oct. 31, 1960 in Sayre, he was the son of Gordon and Jean M. Blend Moore, who live in Rush. On June 23, 1984, he was married to Terry Ann Shaffer, who survives.

A 1978 graduate of Elk Lake High School, he was an independent truck driver who hauled cattle to the Taylor Packing Company, Inc.

He was a member of the Rush Volunteer Fire Company and enjoyed hunting, NASCAR and four wheeling.

In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include his baby daughter, Rachel Lee, at home; sisters and brothers-in-law, Deborah and Steve Grow of Factoryville, Patricia and Richard Stastny of Erieville, NY; a brother and sister-in-law, Gordon, Jr. and Marie Moore of Lawton; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Betty Shaffer of Camptown; sisters-in-law and their spouses, Tammy and Michael Darling of Rush, Lori Lee and Daniel Barr of New Albany; a brother-in-law, Robert Shaffer, Jr. of Rush; nephews and spouses, Gordon "Mac" and Lisa Moore, III, Chad Moore, Alan and Erica Grow, Sean and Sherry Grow, Jason Stastny, Dennis Moore, Jr., Dean Moore, Brian Darling, Snyder Barr; nieces and spouse, Stephanie and Sargent Gregory, Ashley Moore, Kelly Darling; several great-nephews and nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A brother, Dennis Moore, and a sister, Linda Moore, predeceased him.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at the Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., 74 Church St., Montrose. The family received friends on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family provided their own flowers and suggests that memorial contributions be sent to his daughter, Rachel’s college fund, c/o Grange National Bank, Lawton, PA 18828.



Fred G. Sutton
Dec. 8, 2001
Fred G. Sutton, age 52, of Camptown, Wyalusing Township, PA, passed away on Saturday evening, Dec. 8, 2001 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.

Born on Sept. 30, 1949 in Sayre, he was the son of Cora Kithcart Sutton and the late Frederick Sutton.

He has been a resident of Camptown for 13 years, and prior to that, lived in the New Era.

His employment included J.R. Morgan Chevrolet in LeRaysville, Rought’s in LeRaysville, Jones Garage in Rome and was employed by U.S. Seal in West Wyoming as a truck driver until his illness wouldn’t allow him to continue.

He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 534 of Wyalusing.

Fred enjoyed NASCAR racing and was an Earnhardt fan and enjoyed time spent playing darts and pool.

He left surviving his wife, Wanda Kobbe Sutton of Wyalusing; his children, Denise Sutton of Burlington, Betsy (Tom) Armitage, Jr. of Wyalusing, Cory (Cassie) Sutton of Stevenville; his grandchildren, Eric Sutton of Towanda, Cody and Kyle Sutton of Germany, Jordan, Taylor and Kelsy Armitage of Wyalusing, Tyler, Kayleen and Morgan Sutton of Stevensville; his mother, Cora Sutton of Camptown; sisters, Beverly Sutton and friend, Kerry Detrick of Sugar Run, Barbara and Bruce Williams of Warren Center and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frederick Sutton in 1986 and a son, Kevin Sutton, in 1997.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 13 at 1 p.m. in the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing, with the Rev. Larry Thomas of New Milford officiating.

Interment will follow in Camptown Cemetery.

Friends and family called on Wednesday evening, Dec. 12 at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m.


Mrs. Eugenia Estelle Steafather
Dec. 9, 2001
Mrs. Eugenia Estelle Steafather, 91, of El Cajon, CA, formerly of Dushore, PA, died on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001 at Alvardo Hospital, San Diego, CA.

Estelle was born on Nov. 25, 1910 to Maynard Henry and Maude Agethal Stevens Steele in Wilmot Township, Bradford County, PA. She attended the New Albany Vocational High School and continued on to graduate from Scranton School of Beauty. She married Gale Steafather on March 18, 1943. He predeceased her on Dec. 28, 1991.

Estelle and Gale lived on German Street in Dushore where she owned and operated a Gift Boutique and Beauty Shoppe until Gale’s transfer in 1969 to Foremost Dairy, San Diego, CA.

She was a member of the Melody Lane Lutheran Church in El Cajon and formerly a member of Zion’s Chapel Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Dushore. She was also a member of the Wyalusing Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Estelle was predeceased by her daughter, Harriet Steafather-Morrissey, July 21, 2001, her sister, Vuriel Robinson Browning, May 31, 1992 and an infant brother, Henry Steele.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, William and Rebecca Steafather of Groton, CT; granddaughters, Sheryl and Amy Steafather of Groton, CT; great-granddaughters, Emily and Maggie Hedrick of Groton, CT a son-in-law, Roy Morrissey of Springfield, NJ and two nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 10 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St. in Dushore, with the Rev. Eddie A. Nilsen, pastor of Zion Chapel, officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Dushore.


Rachel Wells Meyers
Dec. 9, 2001
Mrs. Rachel Wells Meyers, age 86, of Wyalusing, PA, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of the Memorial Hospital, Towanda.

Rachel was born in Wyalusing on April 8, 1915, daughter of the late Francis and Emma Ruff Wells. She graduated from the Wyalusing High School, a member of the Class of 1931. She received her BS in Education from the Wilson College in Chambersburg in 1935. She taught junior high in Towanda from 1936 to 1941. Rachel then moved to Great Neck, LI where she began teaching at the Great Neck Middle School in 1941. While teaching at Great Neck, Rachel received her MS from Columbia University in New York City. In 1970, she retired from Great Neck after 29 years of service and moved back to Wyalusing.

Rachel was married to Milton Meyers of Flushing, NY in 1952 and he predeceased her in 1968.

Rachel was a resident of the Wyalusing Personal Care Home for the past two years.

She was a member of the Wyalusing Presbyterian Church.

Surviving is one sister, Marion Wells of Sayre.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 11:30 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Barry R. Ballard, her pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Wyalusing Cemetery.

Friends called on Wednesday morning from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Sherle L. "Smitty" Smith
Dec. 10, 2001
Sherle L. "Smitty" Smith, 61, of 833 Iron Ridge Rd., Spring Grove, PA, died 11:05 p.m., Monday evening, Dec. 10, 2001 at Hanover Hospital. He was the husband of Phyllis L. Grover Smith, to whom he was married 35 years on Oct. 15.

Born in Amaranth, PA on March 30, 1940, he was the son of the late Preston Doyle and Hazel Agnes (Himes) Smith.

He had been employed as a carpenter.

In addition to his wife, he is also survived by a daughter, Kandi L. Kress of New Oxford; a son, Shawn L. Smith, at home; a grandson, Cody; three sisters, Darlene Bradley of Greencastle, Betty Bricker, Millie Unger, both of Mercersburg and a brother, Kenneth Smith of Little Rock, AR.

Preceding him in death was a sister, Gay Pine.

His funeral services will be held on Thursday evening, Dec. 13 at 8 p.m. at the Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover. Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday evening at the funeral home. Burial will be private. Rev. Kenneth S. Heasley, pastor of Emmanuel United Church of Christ will officiate.

Clymer Stark (Bear) Ross
Dec. 11, 2001.
Mr. Clymer Stark (Bear) Ross, age 68, of PO Box 192, Meshoppen, PA, passed away suddenly at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital in Towanda on Tuesday morning, Dec. 11, 2001.

Born in Scranton, on June 23, 1933, he was the son of the late Harold and Marilla Brown Ross. Mr. Ross was the husband of the former Kay Louise Arey, with whom he celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary on Nov. 28. He was a graduate of Laceyville High School, Class of 1951. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a sergeant during the German Occupation, where he was stationed in Germany.

After being discharged from the service, he was employed by Ingersoll Rand in Buffalo, NY. He was also employed as a yard foreman for Whipple Brothers Lumber Yard in Laceyville. He later retired in the early 1980’s from Procter & Gamble in Mehoopany, where he was a warehouse technician for 15 years. After retirement, he and his wife owned and operated the Bear’s Den in Meshoppen for the past 21 years.

He was a member of the Montrose American Legion Post #154 of Elk Lake. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Surviving are his wife, Kay Louise Ross of Meshoppen; stepdaughter, Sharon Sickler of Tunkhannock; a stepson, Larry Whitney of Meshoppen; step-grandson, Jeremy Whitney of Tunkhannock and a brother, Keith Ross of Montrose. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Glenn Ross, Harold Ross and Orrin Ross and three sisters, Frances Barrett, Mary Lou Jayne and Lois Ross.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 14 at 11 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with the Rev. Dave Hinkley of the Russell Hill United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Beaver Meadows Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorial donations to the American Heart Association.
C. Avery Smith
Dec. 11, 2001
C. Avery Smith, age 73, of Camptown, PA, passed away at Endless Mountains Health Systems in Montrose on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001 after a long period of declining health.

He was born July 6, 1928 in Merryall, Wyalusing Township, the son of the late Raymond A. and Helen Stone Smith.

Avery was a graduate of Camptown High School, Class of 1946. He served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and two years in the U.S. Reserves.

He was an insurance agent for State Auto and Ohio Casualty Insurance for a number of years. He also owned and operated C.A. Smith TV-Appliance. In late years, he worked for both Dean Bennett and Keith Bluhm as an electronic technician.

Surviving are his wife of 43 years, the former Dorothy Warburton; his daughter and her husband, Raymonda and Douglas Barnhart of Apalachin, NY; two sons, Avery D. Smith of Endicott, NY and Dana W. Smith, also of Endicott, NY; three grandsons, whom he loved dearly, Aaron and Bryant Barnhart of Apalachin, NY and Codi Smith of Johnson City, NY; a sister, Genevieve Cronk of Washington, DC and three cousins, Mrs. Jack (Betsy) Reynolds of Fairdale, Edward Stone of Smithville Flats, NY and Claudia Sommerlund of Cedar Falls, IO.

It was Avery’s request that there be no viewing or funeral. A graveside service will be held for the family at their convenience.

Judith (Jackson) Walker
Dec. 14, 2001
Judith (Jackson) Walker of 136 N. Calle Tortuga, Benson, AZ (formerly of Green Valley, AZ), died on Friday, Dec. 14, 2001 at Benson Hospital’s Hospice Room after a long and courageous battle with diabetes, kidney and heart diseases.

Born Oct. 13, 1941 in Birchardville, Susquehanna County, PA, she was the daughter of the late George L. and Alice (Blaisure) Jackson.

On Aug. 7, 1960, she married Kenneth B. Walker, Sr., in Endicott, NY, who survives her.

Also surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Debby E. and A. Cain Bowman, Benson, AZ, Kerry A. and Thomas M. Early, Dragoon, AZ, Jodi L. Clary, Dragoon, AZ, Chuck Clary, Mescal, AZ; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth B., Jr. and Asa Walker, Tucson, AZ, James G. and Daisy L. Walker, Rush, Timothy J. and Windy Walker, Pascagoula, MS; sisters and a brother-in-law, Marjorie Eberly, Candor, NY, Mary and Ron May, Pageland, SC; brother and sister-in-law, Fred E. and Kathy Jackson, Tunkhannock; father-in-law, Kenneth C. Walker, Sahuarita, AZ; grandchildren, Judy E. Bowman, Christine M. and Rebecca J. Early, Christopher, Bradley, Steven, Kenneth and Charles Clary, Alexis K. Walker, Erin L. Walker, Dee Dee Walker, David and Trae McDevitt; several brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were brothers, Robert, George, Jerry, Buddy and Ronald Jackson; daughters, Terry, Sherry and Sarah Walker and a granddaughter, Kendra D. Walker-Bowman.

A memorial service will be held at the Assembly of God Green Valley, 1100 W. Calle Privada, Sahuarita, AZ on Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David Stowell (Green Valley) and Rev. Michael D. Gordon (Benson First Assembly of God), officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial donation be made to the Benson Hospital Hospice Fund or to the charity of one’s choice.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.



Dr. James F. Smith, Sr.,
Dec. 17, 2001
Dr. James F. Smith, Sr., 84, 1550 Irene St., Bethlehem, PA, passed away on Monday, Dec. 17, 2001 at his home.

Born on Feb. 10, 1917 in Allentown, he was the son of the late Bernard and Catherine Tobin Smith.

An educator and psychologist for the Easton School District for 31 years, he was also a chiropractor practicing out of offices in Easton, Towanda and Wyalusing and Phillipsburg, NJ. He was a graduate of Palmer School of Chiropractic and Northampton Community College and Muhlenberg College.

He was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church of Bethlehem and a member of the American Chiropractic Association and enjoyed reading and cooking.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor A. Fiedler Smith, to whom he was married for 61 years; a son, James Smith, II, Wyalusing; a daughter, Judith Smith, Allentown; a brother, Arthur, Easton; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers, Dr. George (former mayor of Easton), Sylvester and Herbert; sisters, Helen and Gertrude.

There will be no calling hours.

Private funeral services will be held at the Ashton Funeral Home, 14th and Northampton Sts., Easton.

Interment will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Palmer Twp., PA.

Beatrice M. Vlasca
Dec. 18, 2001
Beatrice M. Vlasca of Tunkhannock, PA died on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001 at Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock. She was the widow of Victor M. Vlasca, who died in 1969.

She was born on Feb. 12, 1915 in Montrose, daughter of the late Orville and Elsie Cole Arnold.

She graduated from Rider College and became a legal secretary in New York City where she met Victor. Eventually they moved to South Auburn where they operated Harmony Hill Farms. After Victor’s death, she moved to Tunkhannock and became active in community theater and the Tunkhannock Library. For many years, she traveled frequently around the world and wintered in Florida.

She became a painter and many friends and family members own some of her lovely paintings.

Surviving are a daughter, Dr. Gladi Porsche and her husband, Al of Durham, NH; two grandchildren, Hilary Ingrid and Michael Porsche; sisters, Louise LaRue of East Rush and Dorothy Purdy of Laceyville; brothers, George Arnold of Florida and Ralph Arnold of Montrose. Bea also had many friends who will miss her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor, in 1969 and a brother, William Arnold, in 1960.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, Dec. 20 from Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Richards, pastor of the Tunkhannock United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Birchardville Cemetery.

Maze Moore

Maze Moore, 96, of Tunkhannock, formerly of Lymanville, PA, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001 at Carpenter Care Center in Tunkhannock.

She was born in Factoryville on Jan. 28, 1905, daughter of the late Robert and Lillian Sutton Harding. Maze was married to George T. Moore, who preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 1979.

A licensed practical nurse, she was employed by the Tyler Memorial Hospital.

She was a member of the Tunkhannock United Methodist Church and the Tunkhannock Library Board. Maze loved to visit the library. When she was a baby, she was held in the palm of the hand of Christy Mathewson.

Survivors include four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A daughter, Louise Rosengrant, also preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Roger Richards of the Tunkhannock United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in the Sunnyside Cemetery, Tunkhannock.

Calling hours were held one hour prior to the service.

Mary Ellen Fourney, age 78, of Dushore, PA, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001 at The Highlands in Laporte.

Mary Ellen was born in Bernice on Aug. 13, 1923, a daughter of the late Edward and Mary O’Neill Gainer. She graduated from St. Basil’s High School in Dushore, a member of the Class of 1941. She attended Miss Wheaton Business School in Williamsport and began working as a bookkeeper in Washington, DC. She later took a position with the War Personnel Department during WWII as a secretary at the Pentagon.

After the war, she returned to Pennsylvania and began working for Commercial Credit in Williamsport where she met William Leonard Fourney of Williamsport. They were married at St. Basil’s Church on April 19, 1952. Bill predeceased her on Nov. 29, 1995.

Mary Ellen worked for 20 years at the former Endicott Johnson Shoe Factory in Mildred. She later worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Assistance in Dushore, from which she retired on Jan. 3, 1987 after 15 years of service.

She was a member of St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, and a member of the Catholic Women’s Guild. Mary Ellen was an avid bingo player and really enjoyed her bingo nights.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Sharon Fourney, Dushore; a daughter and son-in-law, M. Eileen and Clifford Molyneux of Dushore; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Catherine and Patrick Ryan of Wyalusing and Rita and William Stoddard of Sugar Run; a sister-in-law, Patricia O. Gainer, Levittown; six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 22 from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, and was followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, her pastor, presiding. Interment was in the adjoining parish cemetery.

Friends called at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. The members of the Catholic Women’s Guild recited the rosary at 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening at the funeral home.

Claude A. Brewer, 74, of New Milford Township, PA, died on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001 at his residence. Born on Feb. 9, 1927 in Meshoppen, he was the son of the late John H. and Ethel (France) Brewer. He was married to L. Juanita (Howell) on July 3, 1947, who survives.

He was a plant manager for Dairylea Corporation for 34 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Sharon Chesko of Kirkwood, NY; three sons, Carl Brewer of Hop Bottom, Wayne Brewer of Endicott, NY, Alan Brewer; five grandchildren, Lisa Wingate, Lorie Brewer, Sally Newberry, Michael Brewer, Matthew Brewer; two great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Jeffrey Wingate; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy Repper of New Milford, Eleanor and Gerald Michel of Charlotte, NC, Grace and Arthur Sheffler of Meshoppen; a brother, Edwin Brewer of Meshoppen; nieces and nephews.

His brothers, Harry, George and William Brewer predeceased him.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29 at the Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., 74 Church St., Montrose. The family received friends on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mildred E. LaRue Harned

Mildred E. LaRue Harned, 92, of Rush, PA, died on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001 at the Meadow View Senior Living Center, Montrose. Born Sept. 16, 1909 in Rush Township, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Della (Powers) Winans. Her husbands, Dana B. Harned and Earl C. LaRue, predeceased her.

She was a member of the Rush United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was a florist in the Rush area for a number of years and was a former member of the Ernestine Rebekah Lodge No. 548, Rush.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Mildred LaRue of Rush; three stepdaughters and husbands, Thelma and Robert Cooper of Colorado, Beverly and Joseph Holder, Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren and spouses, Nancy and George Baker, Meshoppen, Sally and Michael McGlynn, Rush, Dennis and Victoria LaRue, Rush and eight step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; eight step-great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; nieces and nephews.

One son, Willard LaRue and one brother, Harvey Winans, preceded her in death.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 30 at Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., 74 Church St., Montrose. The family received friends on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Kern C. Dibble
Dec. 27, 2001
Mr. Kern C. Dibble, age 78, of PO Box 105, West Ave., Meshoppen, PA, passed away on Thursday morning, Dec. 27, 2001 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Wilkes-Barre.

He was born on Aug. 14, 1923, the son of the late Raymond George and Hazle Carter Dibble. Kern was the husband of the former Alma McMillan, who passed away on March 25, 1977.

He was a graduate of the Meshoppen High School and also a graduate of Wilkes College in Wilkes-Barre. He also attended Penn State University and Brigham Young University. Kern was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theatre as a Staff Sergeant in the 70th Division from 1943 until 1946.

Mr. Dibble owned and operated Dibble Hardware in Meshoppen, a business that was started by his grandfather in 1895. He continued to run the business until he retired in 1996. During that time, fire destroyed the business in Meshoppen and was rebuilt on its present location in Black Walnut. Dibble Hardware is now being run by his son, Kern G. Dibble. He also enjoyed the family farm in South Auburn, where he raised crops and enjoyed a large garden.

He was a member of the Meshoppen United Methodist Church, the Rought-Hall Post #510, American Legion in Black Walnut and the Kingston VFW. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting on the farm and enjoyed fishing the farm pond and also the Susquehanna River.

Surviving are his second wife, the former Phyllis Lyke, to whom he had been married for 19 years; two sons and daughter-in-law, Kern G. and Cookie Dibble of Meshoppen and Raymond W. Dibble of South Auburn; two daughters and son-in-law, Susan and Jeff Nulton of South Auburn and Patricia Keiber of Wyalusing; seven stepchildren, James J. Haines of Newark Valley, NY, Jack D. Haines of Holbrook, Long Island, NY, Jerry T. Haines of Iron Station, SC, Wendy A. Haskell of Owego, NY, Susan L. Cole of Rome, Betsy L. Hickey of Waverly, NY and Jean M. Homan of Tampa, FL; eight grandchildren, Thomas Keiber, Jr. of Wyalusing, Lucille Keiber of Wyalusing, Jessica (Ben) Stine of South Auburn, Lindsey Nulton and Laura Nulton of South Auburn, Josh (Jessica) Dibble, Sarrah Dibble and Carly Dibble of Meshoppen; four great-grandchildren, Isaac Kern Dibble of Meshoppen, Benjamin Franklin Stine, IV, Kendra Stine and Staci Stine, all of South Auburn; also, 16 step-grandchildren and four-step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with the Rev. Gary Myers, of the Meshoppen Biblical Baptist Church and Rev. William Nelson, retired Methodist minister, officiating. Interment was in the Overfield Cemetery in Meshoppen.

Friends and family called at the funeral home on Sunday, Dec. 30 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Graveside military services were conducted by the members of the Rought-Hall Post #510 American Legion and the VFW Endless Mountains Post #3583.

Richard J. "Dick" Overfield

Mr. Richard J. (Dick) Overfield, age 58 of RR2, Box 295, Meshoppen, PA, passed away suddenly on Thursday evening, Dec. 27, 2001 at Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock.

Born in Kingston on July 23, 1943, he was the son of the late Virginia Jennings Overfield, who passed away in 1989 and Joseph P. Overfield, with whom he lived in Meshoppen. He was the husband of the former Peggy Irwin Overfield, who passed away in 1981.

Mr. Overfield was a graduate of Elk Lake High School, Class of 1962. Dick was employed by the Salt River Project in Phoenix, AZ, retiring in 1999.

Surviving besides his father, are a son, Richard Overfield of Phoenix, AZ; two daughters, Rachel Wilson and Cindy Overfield, both of Phoenix, AZ; four brothers, Larry (Jane) Overfield of Meshoppen, Bruce (Anna Reyes) Overfield of Tunkhannock, Scott Overfield of Meshoppen and Jeff Overfield of Phoenix, AZ; four sisters, Carol (Craig) Bridgman of Stonington, CT, Andrea (Barry) Moyer Overfield of Fleetwood, Jill (Tom) Hoffman of Laceyville and Lisa (Peter) Townsend of Meshoppen; three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Dec. 30 at 4 p.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville with Rev. William Nelson, retired Methodist minister officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Phoenix, AZ. Family and friends called at the funeral home on Sunday from 3 p.m. until the time of the service.


William J. Burleigh

William J. Burleigh, age 91, of Wyalusing RD (Lime Hill), PA, passed away at his home on Friday, Dec. 28, 2001 following a lingering illness.

He was born in Scranton, the son of the late Charles W. and Mary Jane Emery Burleigh.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Layman Burleigh in 1996; a grandson, Kevin Potter in 1985; sisters, Gladys Moredock, Adeline Beemer, Beatrice Keller, Florence Banks and infant brothers, Glenn and Walter.

Mr. Burleigh was a member of the Wyalusing Presbyterian Church and enjoyed attending there when he was able. He had served as an elder in the church, sung in the choir and had been the Sunday School superintendent for many years.

He was a man of many talents. He worked at a telephone company, a bank, a burial company, was a farmer and custodian. For several years, he was a clerk for the Wyalusing Farm and Home and drove a school bus for 34 years for the Wyalusing Area School District.

He enjoyed hunting, watching baseball games and as of late, became a Jeff Gordon fan.

Survivors include his daughters, Barbara (Mrs. Alfred) Singley, Broadway, NJ; Doris (Mrs. John) Howard, Wyalusing; Nancy (Mrs. Walter) Potter, Wyalusing and Janet Morrow of Waverly, NY; a sister, Mrs. Bernice Kessinger, Dallas, TX; 21 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Friends and family called at the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing, from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002.

Funeral services were held at the Wyalusing Presbyterian Church, Wednesday, Jan. 2 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. John Dabback, officiating. Interment was in the Camptown Cemetery.

Andrew Anthony (Bonnie) Andjeski, age 78, of Lopez and Wilkes-Barre, PA, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 at the VA Medical Center, 23rd Street and First Avenue, New York, NY.

Bonnie was born in Lopez on Nov. 11, 1923, a son of the late Stanley Vincent and Tekla Kwiatkowski Andjeski. He graduated from the Cherry Township High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he worked for several years for the U.S. Merchant Marines and then began working for the City of New York. He was a stationary engineer working for the Bridge and Tunnel Authority at the Williamsburg Bridge until his retirement in 1988. During his working career, he came to Lopez almost every weekend.

Surviving are a daughter, Genevieve Andjeski, Staten Island, NY; two stepsons and spouses, Kenneth and Betty Harrell, Staten Island, NY and Roger and Maryann Harrell, Largo, FL; brothers and sister-in-law, Edward and Ruby Anjeski, Dushore and Frank Andjeski, Lopez; sisters, Mrs. Sophie Bay and Mrs. Mary Kneller, both of Williamsport; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his spouse, the former Della I. Beck on June 18, 1988; two brothers, Joseph Andzeski on March 3, 1990 and Charles A. Andjeski on May 12, 1995.

Funeral services were held from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002 at 11:30 a.m. and was followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Mildred. Interment was in SS Peter and Paul’s Byzantine Cemetery, Lopez.

Mrs. Lucy L. Whipple

Mrs. Lucy L. Whipple, age 85, of 229 E. Main St., Laceyville, PA, passed away at Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001.

Born in Laceyville on June 12, 1916, she was the daughter of the late R. Bruce and Lydia Thompson Pickett. Mrs. Whipple was the wife of the late Carl Whipple, who passed away on July 22, 1978.

Lucy was a graduate of Laceyville High School, Class of 1934. She later graduated from the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse in the Obstetrics Department at Tyler Memorial Hospital for over 25 years, retiring in 1981.

She was a very active member of the Braintrim Baptist Church, Laceyville, where she served for many years as the Cradle Roll Superintendent. She was also one of the founders of the Laceyville Ambulance Association and was an active member and attendant of the ambulance until ill health forced her to step down. In her spare time, she enjoyed a large garden and outdoor sports, including hunting, trapping and fishing.

Surviving are a daughter, Ellen Whipple of Laceyville; a son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Sarah Whipple of Laceyville; two grandchildren, Daniel and Lydia Whipple of Laceyville; two sisters-in-law, Joan Cogswell Pickett and Ruth Inman Pickett, both of Laceyville; also several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Ida Pickett Parry and Mildred (Johnnie) Pickett Grow; three brothers, R. Bruce Pickett, Jr., William Pickett and Edward Pickett.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Braintrim Baptist Church in Laceyville, with the Rev. Vic Millard, of the church, officiating. Interment will be in the Lacey St. Cemetery.

Mrs. Lela E. Burr, age 92, of Carpenter Care Center, Tunkhannock, PA, formerly of Laceyville, passed away at the Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock, early Monday morning, Dec. 31, 2001. Mrs. Burr was a resident of Carpenter Care Center for 12 years.

Born in Silvara on April 20, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Lavern L. and Blanche Barnes Ervin. She was the widow of the late Clark R. Burr, who passed away in 1966.

Graduating from the Laceyville High School, Class of 1929, she later became a housewife and homemaker for her husband and daughter.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and William R. Austin of Laceyville; her sister, Pauline Brandstettner of Laceyville; three grandchildren, Anne Crutcher of Endwell, NY, William R. Austin, Jr. of Maine, NY and Richard B. Austin of Endwell, NY; also several nieces and one nephew. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Michael and Betty Buck; also two brothers, Francis Ervin and Harold Ervin.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in the Jersey Hill Cemetery, Auburn.
