Justin Carl Wells, age 21, beloved son of David E. Wells and Tamra L. Hugo, died unexpectedly in New Albany, PA on Friday, Feb. 22, 2002.

He was born on Feb. 3, 1981 in Sayre and was a lifetime resident of the New Albany area.

At the young age of three, Justin chose the name of "Autumn" for his sister, whom he later called "Auti."

In his younger years, he played Little League baseball, which was coached by his father.

He is a graduate of Wyalusing Valley High School, Class of 1999.

Justin enjoyed time spent hunting, fishing, playing video games, basketball, WWF, reading, music, computers and loved helping people.

He left surviving after 21 loving years, his mother, Tamra L. Hugo of New Albany; his father, David E. Wells of New Albany; his sister, Autumn Lynn Wells, at home; maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Virginia Hugo of New Albany; paternal grandparents, Carl and Loueva (Pee Wee) Wells of New Era; two aunts and an uncle, Tracy Karamooz and Rose and Lamar Kipp; two uncles, Sidney Hugo and Perry Hugo; several cousins, Jennifer, Marla, Madalyn, Angelica, Zachary and Quentin; a special friend, Stephanie Hoskins; maternal great-grandfather and wife, Ivan and Grace Hugo of New Albany and by several great aunts, great uncles, cousins and by his many friends.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. in the New Albany Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ronald Troup, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Robert Martin.

Friends and family called on Wednesday at the New Albany Baptist Church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Justin Wells Memorial Fund, c/o Peoples State Bank, PO Box A, New Albany, PA 18833, a counseling memorial fund for Wyalusing Valley Junior-Senior High School students, in Justin’s memory.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore.

Catherine T. Smith, 86, died on Friday, Feb. 22, 2002 at Meadowview Senior Living Center.

She was born Oct. 6, 1915 in Bridgewater Twp., daughter of the late Fred B. and Nellie (Jagger) Tyler. Her husband, Milton A. Smith, predeceased her in Sept. of 1989. She sold Avon locally.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Lee and Carl Foreman of Bonita Springs, FL; three sons and daughters-in-law, Warren A. and Judy Smith of Great Bend, Wayne E. and Lynda Smith of Rush and Ronald D. and Debra Smith of Birchardville; six grandchildren, Suzette Bailey, Robin Cohn, Meghan Smith, Riley Smith, Jacob Smith and Justin Smith; three great-grandchildren, Cheryl Bailey, Steve Bailey and Krista Cohn and nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., 74 Church St., Montrose. The family received friends on Tuesday from 10 until the time of the services.


Sarah Lundy Clark

Sarah Lundy Clark, 78, wife of Claude C. "Dick" Clark of Herrick Township, Wyalusing RR3, PA, died on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 20, 2002 at Memorial Hospital in Towanda.

Born Dec. 26, 1923 in Standing Stone Township, she was a daughter of the late George and Verna Clagett Lundy. On April 30, 1947, Sarah married Claude C. Clark.

Sarah was a member of the Standing Stone United Methodist Church and the Standing Stone Grange. Her main interest in life surrounded her home and family. Sarah enjoyed cooking.

Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Claude C. "Dick" Clark, at home; a son, Dale Clark of Wyalusing RR3; a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Michelle Clark of Wyalusing RR3; three grandchildren; Michelle Tewksbury, Michael and Danielle Clark; a brother, Floyd Lundy of The Highlands, Laporte; a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Helen Lundy of Standing Stone; sisters-in-law, Jean C. Lundy, Ella Mae Lundy and Jean R. Lundy, all of Standing Stone; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Hotaling and by five brothers, Donald, Ralph, William, Renwick and Frederick Lundy.

The funeral was held on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Helen Learn, pastor of the Standing Stone United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment followed in the Standing Stone Cemetery, Standing Stone Township.

The family received friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday afternoon at the funeral home.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Standing Stone United Methodist Church in care of Ellen Franklin, RR2, Box 47, Wysox, PA 18854 in Mrs. Clark’s memory.


Art Irwin
Feb. 17, 2002
Art Irwin of Clarksville, GA, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002 after a short illness.

Art and his family moved to Retta, PA from Florida and bought the Raymond Ace farm, which he ran for several years, and just recently moved to Georgia.

Art is survived by his wife, Charlotte; two daughters, Maryln Bell of Georgia and Sharon Parker of Elmira, NY; a sister, Marylyn of Florida; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A daughter, Peggy, preceded him in death.

Art was a member of the Retta Methodist Church, Men’s Club and Rod and Gun Club of Rush.

He will be sorely missed by his family and all his many friends. Art was held in high esteem.

He leaves a wide circle of close family and friends.


Roger D. Chilson
Feb. 22, 2002
Roger D. Chilson, 45, Wysox RR2, Wysox Township, PA, died on Friday, Feb. 22, 2002 as the result of a motor vehicle accident in Tuscarora Township, Bradford County.

Roger was a graduate of Towanda High School, Class of 1975. On July 12, 1975 he married the former Michele Grimes at SS Peter and Paul Church in Towanda.

Roger was employed by Masonite Corporation in Wysox for 23 years from 1975 until 1998. From 1998 to present, Roger was employed by Procter & Gamble in Mehoopany.

Roger possessed great love for his family and friends. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, was a Rusty Wallace NASCAR fan and was a member of the Wick/Chil Hunting Camp on Mercur Hill.

Surviving are his wife of 26 years, Michele Grimes Chilson, at home; his parents, Joseph and Joyce Chilson of Wysox; his children and their spouses, Tonya and Leon Manning of Towanda, Stacy and "Scooby" Wickwire of Wysox, Roger "Bud," II and Amber Chilson of Towanda and Dustin Chilson, at home; six grandchildren, Luciann, Dakotah and Dawsan Manning, Koryn, Dayton and Mykenna Wickwire; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph B. and Nancy Chilson of Wysox, Jerry and Anna Chilson of Rome, Larry Chilson of Wysox; sisters and brothers-in-law, Anetta and Robert Soper of Wysox, Rose and Philip Rohe of Bend Circle, TX, Cathy Shoemaker of Wysox, LaVeda Gunther of Wysox, Valarie and Joseph Donat of Linden, Karen Chilson of Greer, SC; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Allan Hulslander, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Towanda, officiating.

Interment was in the Wysox Cemetery.

The family received friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

John W. Anderson, III, 30; Charles John "C.J." Anderson, 10; James Daniel Anderson, eight; Brittany Marie Anderson, six, and Tyler David Anderson, three, all of 207 East Lockhart St., Sayre, PA, died as the result of a fire that swept through their home Wednesday evening, Feb. 20, 2002. John, Charles, Brittany and Tyler were pronounced dead on Wednesday evening at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. James died Thursday, Feb. 21 at the Upstate Medical University Hospital in Syracuse, NY.

John W. Anderson, III, 30, husband of Charlett Grover Anderson and father of Charles, James, Brittany and Tyler Anderson, was born July 1, 1971 in Tunkhannock, son of John W. Anderson, II and Kathleen Warfle Hicks. On Aug. 25, 1991 he married the former Charlett Grover in Sayre. John was employed by Rynone Packaging Systems in Waverly, NY. His life encompassed his family, and he loved fishing and playing basketball.

Survivors include his wife, Charlett; his father and stepmother, John W., II and Judy Anderson of Wyalusing; his mother, Kathleen Warfle Hicks of Sayre; paternal grandparents, John W., Sr. and Romayne Anderson of Tunkhannock; two brothers, Mark Anderson of Wyalusing and Phillip Anderson of Uniontown; four sisters, Lynn Shaffer of Sayre, Tina Anderson of Elmira, NY, Karolyn Anderson of Sayre and Melinda Sharts and her husband, David Sharts of Wyalusing; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Charles John "C.J." Anderson, 10, was born Jan. 26, 1992 in Sayre and was a fourth grade student in Miss Lyons’s class at the H. Austin Snyder Elementary School in Sayre. C.J. was a member of the Sayre Small Fry Seahawks Football Team and the Valley BMX Riders. C.J. enjoyed being with his family and playing basketball.

James Daniel Anderson, eight, was born July 16, 1993 in Sayre and was a third grade student in Mr. Dehaan’s class in H. Austin Snyder Elementary School. James enjoyed playing games with his dad and football.

Brittany Marie Anderson, six, was born March 25, 1995 in Sayre and was a first grade student in Miss Quinn’s class at the H. Austin Snyder Elementary School. Brittany loved playing with her cousins, going to church and school.

Tyler David Anderson, three, was born on Dec. 15, 1998 in Sayre. He loved playing with his cars and trucks and with the family’s dog, Max.

Charles, James, Brittany and Tyler are survived by their mother, Charlett; maternal grandparents, Chuck and Debra Grover of Sayre; paternal grandparents, John W., II and Judy Anderson of Wyalusing and Kathleen Warfle Hicks of Sayre; maternal great-grandmother, Pauline Hall of Sayre; paternal great-grandparents, John W., Sr. and Romayne Anderson of Tunkhannock; aunts and uncles, Tammy Gleason of Hornell, NY, Peggy and Jason Reed of Sayre, Charles, Jr. and Missie Grover of New Benn, NC, Richard, Sr. and Dusty Grover of Elmira, NY, Jason and Tonda Grover of Sayre, Mark Anderson of Wyalusing, Phillip Anderson of Uniontown, Lynn Shaffer of Sayre, Tina Anderson of Elmira, NY, Karolyn Anderson of Sayre, Melinda and David Sharts of Wyalusing; numerous great aunts, uncles, cousins and many caring friends.

A memorial service for the Anderson family was held on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Church of the Redeemer, South Wilbur Ave., Sayre, with the Rev. Benjamin Lentz, Rector, officiating.

Interment was private on Wednesday in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Alteri Funeral Home, 314 Desmond St., Sayre.

There were no calling hours.


Leonard C. Zimmerman
Feb. 17, 2002
Mr. Leonard C. Zimmerman, age 78, of Terry Township, Bradford County, PA, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.

Leonard was born Oct. 23, 1925 in Buffalo, NY, son of the late Harry A. and Isabelle R. Reynolds Zimmerman. He graduated from high school and entered the Army during WWII. He served during the war in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and was discharged in 1946.

He began working for the Greyhound Bus Lines and worked for them for more than 30 years, retiring in Lakeland, FL in 1985. He later moved to Lime Hill in 1992 and then to Terry Township in 1996.

Surviving are a sister, Carol and close friend, Centa Poetschan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday morning, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Wyalusing with the Rev. Kenneth M. Seegar, pastor, presiding. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.






Beverly V. Sutton Wilcox

Beverly V. Sutton Wilcox, 73, wife of Fenton Wilcox of 932 S. Main St., Towanda, PA, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002 at her home.

Born July 18, 1928 in Noxen, she was a daughter of the late James and Mary Mack Sutton and was the foster daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Inman of Laceyville.

In early years, Beverly provided youth care for Shelley and Mat Watkins and Jackie Talada. Her main interest in life encompassed her home and family.

Beverly attended the Wysox Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Asylum Township VFW Post No. 6072 Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are her husband, Fenton Wilcox, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy Jo and Jim Coleman of Rome; a son and daughter-in-law, David M. and Bonnie Wilcox of Monroeton; six grandchildren, Twyla Wickwire, Condra Potter, Kristi and Craig Coleman, Thad and Drew Wilcox; a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Ennis; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Susie Wilcox and by four brothers and four sisters.

The funeral service was held on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Karen Ballard of the Rome Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment was in the Quicks Bend Cemetery, Wilmot Township.

The family received friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Wendell Henry Phillips

Wendell Henry Phillips, passed away on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2002, surrounded by the love of his children, grandchildren, relatives and friends.

Born on Aug. 30, 1915 in South Auburn, PA, he was raised by an uncle on a farm for the first 16 years of his life.

He attended the Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, IL from 1932 to 1935 and the Bob Jones University, Cleveland, TN from 1935 to 1936, where he was the roommate of Evangelist Billy Graham. From 1937 to 1938, he attended Trinity Bible College in Florida.

In 1938, he returned to Pennsylvania to marry and over the next ten years, devoted his life in the service of the Lord as a Baptist minister.

After moving to Florida in 1944, he continued to minister. Through a twist of fate, his building career began by his need to remodel a church parsonage. He built many houses and commercial buildings all with honesty and integrity. In 1963, he moved to California, where he continued his building projects.

Wendell enjoyed photography and traveling and took his family with him on many trips all over the United States and many foreign countries.

His wife, Esther, passed away in Solvang, CA in 1996 after 58 years of marriage.

Services were held on Feb. 16 at the Ballard Country Church and the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Steven Leskoven, Sr.

Steven Leskoven, Sr., age 91, of Wilmot Township, Bradford County, PA, passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 14, 2002 at his home, with his family by his side.

Steve was born in Grassflats, Centre County, PA, on April 12, 1910. He worked in the local coal mines and later traveled throughout the West. Steve married the former Irene Krasinski in 1934 and they resided in Norristown until moving to Wilmot in 1958. They owned and operated a store, deli and gas station in Wilmot for many years and later operated Steve and Irene’s Pizzeria in Wysox until they retired. Irene predeceased him on Dec. 1, 1996.

He was a member of St. Basil’s Catholic Church in Dushore, a member of the former Holy Name Society and the St. Basil’s Cemetery Association. Steve was also very active as an usher at the Saturday afternoon Vigil Mass at St. Francis Church, Cummiskey and later at St. Basil’s.

Surviving are a son, Stephen J. Leskoven, Jr., Wilmot; two daughters, Lynn (Cookie) Rowen, Throop, Mary Ann Napersky, Kingston; 19 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 18 at 10:30 a.m. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, and was followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Basil’s Church in Dushore, with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, his pastor, presiding. Interment was in St. Basil’s Cemetery.

Friends called on Monday at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.




Floyd C. "Shorty" Hitchcock Jr.

Floyd C. "Shorty" Hitchcock Jr., 50, of 15 Girard Ave., Lancaster, PA, formerly of Peach Lane, Conestoga, PA, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2002 at Essa Flory Hospice Center, Lancaster, after an illness.

He was born Sept. 18, 1951, in Meshoppen, to the late Floyd C., Sr. and Gertrude K. Casselbury Hitchcock.

He graduated from Wyalusing Area High in 1969 and was married to Hope A. Spotts Hitchcock May 12, 1979.

Shorty was a third-grade teacher at Hamilton Elementary School, Lancaster, until June 2001.

He was the wrestling coach at Millersville University.

Survivors include his mother, Gertrude K. Casselbury Hitchcock of Stevensville; wife, Hope A. Spotts Hitchcock; son, Matthew C. of Lancaster; two daughters, Megan L. of Bloomsburg and Meredith A. at home; four brothers, Theron E. of Stevensville, Ronald P. of Ulster, Donald L. of Towanda and David S. of Laceyville; two sisters, Rose Marie Belcher of Stevensville and Cindy Brink of Stevensville.

He was predeceased by his father, Floyd, Sr.; a son, Clifford Leon Hitchcock and his brother-in-law, James Belcher, Sr.

The funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the First United Methodist Church of Millersville, 121 N. George St., Millersville, PA.

Visitation was held at the First United Methodist Church of Millersville Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. There will be no viewing or visitation with the family on Wednesday.

Private interment will be held in the Grace United Methodist Church Cemetery, Millersville, PA.

The family strongly suggests no flowers; memorial remembrances may be made to Hospice of Lancaster, Pa. 17604-4125.

A memorial service will be held in the Wyalusing Valley High School auditorium on Sunday, Feb. 24. Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m., with services held from 3 to 4 p.m. with the Rev. Vic Millard of the Braintrim Baptist Church in Laceyville, officiating.


Preston Jay Sherman
Feb. 11, 2002
Preston Jay Sherman, age 31, of RR1, Laceyville, PA, died on Monday morning, Feb. 11, 2002 as the result of an auto accident.

Born in Tunkhannock on April 16, 1970, he was the son of Roger and stepmother, Betty Sherman of Laceyville and Amber Clark Zygmunt and stepfather, Edward of Laceyville.

He was married to the former Veronica Fidler of Meshoppen RR3.

A graduate of Elk Lake High School, Class of 1988, he attended Vale Vo-Tech School in Pittsburgh. He was a t-ball coach for Springville Baseball Association and helped with the junior wrestling program at Elk Lake.

Preston worked on his father’s farm and was in the process of opening his own auto frame shop in Springville. He formerly worked as an auto technician at Quality Collision in Dallas.

Surviving besides his wife, mother, stepfather, father and stepmother are two sons, Bradley Cameron Jay Sherman, age eight, and Zackery Wolfegang Sherman, age six, both of Meshoppen; two sisters, Betsy K. Cole of Meshoppen and Rebecca Sherman Lesko of Clifton, NJ; two stepsisters, Diane Laytos of Springville and Marycolleen Michaels of Meshoppen; one stepbrother, Scott Snyder of Springville; maternal grandmother, Irene Stonier Clark of Tunkhannock; paternal grandmother, Alice Sherman Evans and stepgrandfather, Robert Evans of LeRaysville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Jay T. Clark and Paul Sherman.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 14 (today) at 1 p.m. at the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, with Rev. Eugene B. Benson of the Springville United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Sunnyside Cemetery.

Friends called at the funeral home on Wednesday, Feb. 13 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mr. Lewis James Reed

Mr. Lewis James Reed, age 87, of Sugar Run, PA passed away on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at the Bradford County Manor, West Burlington Township.

Lewis was born in Taylor PA on July 4, 1914, son of the late Edward and Bertha Mapleton Reed. He attended local schools and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He married the former Mahala Saxe of Wilmot Township on April 17, 1954. They celebrated their 47th anniversary last April.

Lewis was a heavy equipment operator in Vestal, NY for over twenty years, retiring to Sugar Run in 1976.

He was a member of the VFW and a member of Wyalusing Post #534 American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Mahala at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Lisa Reed of Morrisville, NC; two brothers and a sister-in-law, James Reed of Melbourne, FL and Edward and Edith Reed of Ocala, FL; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Gertrude Whipple of Wyalusing, Ruth Eberlin of Melbourne, FL and Doris and William Madill of Monroeton; three grandchildren, Christopher, Alexander and Nancy Reed of Morrisville, NC; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday at 12 noon at the P. Dean Home Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Barry R. Ballard, pastor of the Wyalusing Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment was in the Bradford County Memorial Park.

Friends called on Wednesday morning from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Graveside military services were accorded by members of Wyalusing Post #534 American Legion who passed in review at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at the funeral home.


Ralph Piddock

Ralph Piddock, age 81, of Wyalusing, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at his home.

He was born on Dec. 15, 1920 in Utica, NY.

On July 16, 1980, he married the former Wilma VanDerpoel.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the Vestal School District in the maintenance department.

Mr. Piddock had been a resident of this area for the past 15 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

Ralph was a member of the American Legion Post 534 of Wyalusing.

He left surviving his wife, Wilma VanDerpoel Piddock at home; his children: Judy and Frank Kremitske of Tunkhannock, Jerry and Lori Widrig of Wilawana, PA, Clarence Widrig of Moosic and Michael Widrig of Cheraw, SC; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 2:30 p .m. at McHenry Funeral Home, 206 Church Street, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Beverly Davenport, pastor of the Wyalusing United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment was in the Wyalusing Cemetery.

Friends and family called on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 1:30 until the time of the funeral service.

A Military Pass in Review was held Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Helen Leona Chilson Hoover

Mrs. Helen Leona Chilson Hoover, age 88, of Dushore, PA passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of the Memorial Hospital, Towanda.

Helen was born in Terrytown on April 25, 1913, a daughter of the late William and Emily Johnson Benjamin. She attended local schools and married Allen Chilson of Frenchtown. They raised their children and Allen predeceased her in 1961. She married Eugene S. Hoover of Terry Township, who also predeceased her.

Helen was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed cooking and especially baking. Helen also loved her flower garden.

Surviving are three sons, Francis Chilson, Dushore, Dean Chilson, Wyalusing, Nelson Chilson, New Albany; seven daughters, Mrs. Florence Hoover, Wyalusing, Mrs. Doris Johnson, Terrytown, Mrs. Joyce Kipp, New Albany, Mrs. Marguerite Yonkin, Dushore, Mrs. Christine Salsman, Dushore, Mrs. Alice Campbell, Ulster, Ms. Beverly Saul-Wells, Towanda; a sister, Mrs. Nellie Wendella, Elmira, NY; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Carrie Benjamin, Waverly, NY; 39 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sons, Ralph Chilson of Carteret, NJ and Ronald Chilson of Wyalusing and an infant son, Layton; three brothers, Sheldon Benjamin, Ralph Benjamin and Herbert Benjamin and three sisters, Martha Baker, Rosie Johnson and Della Heffron.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Michael Dodd of the Evergreen Christian Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Terrytown Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.


Paul (Piey) Bonanni

Paul (Piey) Bonanni, age 63, of Dushore, PA, died Sunday Feb. 10, 2002 at home.

Piey was born Nov. 9, 1938 in Hillsdale (Plains Township), PA, a son of Susie Marzocchi Bonanni and the late Paul Bonanni, Sr. He graduated from Plains Memorial High School, Class of 1956, and served with the U.S. Navy for three years. Piey worked as a union roofer with Local 124 until his retirement in 1994. He married the former Marie McDonald of Dushore on March 15, 1993 during a blizzard.

Piey loved outdoor sports. He was an avid trap shooter and enjoyed hunting and fly fishing.

He was a member of St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church in Dushore, a member and director of the Hilldale Itlo Club and was also a member of the A.T.A. and Trout Unlimited.

Survivors include his wife, Marie at home; daughters, Marie McDavitt of Pittston and Paula Bonanni of Wilkes-Barre; his mother, Susie Bonanni of Hilldale; sisters, Emily (Mrs. Thomas) Butch of Hilldale and Joan (Mrs. Joseph) Barba of Pittston; one granddaughter, Amanda McDavitt of Pittston; step-daughter, Domani (Mrs. Abbie) Pedro Conner of Dushore; mother-in-law, Marjorie McDonald Yonkin of Dushore; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Piey was predeceased by his father, Paul Bonanni, Sr. on Feb. 12, 1974.

Funeral services will be held from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water Street, Dushore, at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon at St. Basil’s Catholic Church in Dushore with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, his pastor, presiding. Interment will be in the adjoining parish cemetery.

Friends called at the funeral home Wednesday from 4 to 9 p .m.

Hattie G. (Coss) Wells

Hattie G. (Coss) Wells, of Canandaigua, NY, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 5 2002 at Ontario County Health Facility. She was formerly of Herrickville, PA. A loving sister and aunt, Hattie was 102 years old.

Born in Herrickville, Aug. 3, 1899, she was a member of the Herrickville Wesleyan Church for 40 years and a member of the Crosswinds Wesleyan Church in Canandaigua for 13 years.

She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Charles Combs of Rochester, NY; a sister-in-law, Edna Coss of Canandaigua, NY; 11 nieces and nephews, James and Shirley Coss of Marcy, NY, Barb Coss and Ruth and Earl Outhouse of Canandaigua, NY, Judith and Clarence Parr of Oregon, Suzanne and William Carter of Naples, NY, Edward, Paul, Westley, Marvin Pelton of Pennsylvania and Florida, Leona Beatty of Spencer, NY, Maude Coss of Wilson, CA; many great and great-great nieces and nephews and several cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband of 34 years, Lee H. Wells in 1971; two brothers, James A. and Janna Coss; one sister, June Edith Pelton.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Geraldine A. VanWinkle

Geraldine A. VanWinkle, 95, formerly of Camptown, PA, died on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002 at Founders Pavilion, Corning, NY, following an extended illness.

She was born Sept. 13, 1906 in Jackson Valley, PA, the daughter of the late Frank C. and Linda Mae Potts Anderson. She had attended Camptown High School.

Geraldine and Clarence Floyd VanWinkle were married on Aug. 16, 1924 in Elmira. Clarence predeceased her in 1953.

She was employed at the Eclipse Company in Elmira during WWII and later at the Camptown Dress Co. She retired from the Bendix Corporation of South Montrose in 1973 with 21 years of service with the company. Following her retirement, she dedicated her time to her children and grandchildren and traveling.

Geraldine was a member of the Rushville Presbyterian Church and a member and past officer of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Northeast Bradford VFW Memorial Post #6824, Chapter #498 Order of the Eastern Star in LeRaysville and a member of the Ernestine Rebekah Lodge #548 in Rush.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Linda Patrick and Charles Edmister of Corning, NY; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Ellen VanWinkle of Wilton, NH; a daughter-in-law, Miriam VanWinkle of Lawton; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by son, Floyd Lyndon VanWinkle; two sisters, Anna Jones and Clara Jones and by three brothers, Leon Anderson, Jesse Anderson and her twin, Gerald Anderson.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held in Rushville at the convenience of the family. Interment will be held in the family lot in the Rushville Cemetery.

Arrangements are being made by Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St., Corning, NY.

The family would appreciate memorial donations be given to the Wyalusing Volunteer Ambulance Corp., Wyalusing, PA.

Francis Gerald Taylor

Francis Gerald Taylor, age 83, of Herrickville, PA, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital, Towanda.

Francis was born in Herrick Township on Nov. 8, 1918, the son of the late Ralph F. and Cleo Camp Taylor. He attended local schools and was a lifelong dairy farmer in Herrickville. He married the former Dorothy Roof of Standing Stone on May 2, 1953 and they celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary last May.

Francis truly loved farming and also working with tractors. He also worked for Herrick Township and at the Wyalusing Livestock Market.

He was a member of the Herrickville United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Dairymen’s League and the Eastern Milk Producers Association.

Surviving are his spouse, Dorothy, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Colleen Taylor, Herrickville; daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Kenneth Dauberman, Athens, Glenda Taylor, Standing Stone, Elizabeth and Phil Malt of London, England; a brother, Glenn W. Taylor, Herrickville; sister and brother-in-law, Leona and Richard Sandt, Herrickville; five grandchildren, Tammy Stedge and Kelly Dauberman, Jeff Taylor, Amy Taylor and Kim Fassett; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Stedge and Jade Lee. He was predeceased by a grandson, Timothy Lee Dauberman.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. at the Herrickville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Helen Henderson Learn, his pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Camptown Cemetery.

Friends called at the church on Tuesday morning from 9:30 a.m. to the time of the service.
