- Jennie Croft Ward, age 87, highly regarded resident of Towanda RR2, Towanda Township, PA, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2002 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Towanda Memorial Hospital.
Jennie was born June 8, 1915 in Sugar Run, a daughter of the late Lewis and Isabell Johnson Croft. In early years, Jennie was employed by the Towanda Folding Box Company and also served as caretaker of the Hornbrook Park for many years. Jennie was well-known as one of the finest cooks and bakers in the area and will be remembered for her pork cutlets, which she made in her home and distributed to her many area friends. Throughout her life, Jennie was constantly giving of herself to others with her helping hand and many kindnesses. Her unceasing love of her children and grandchildren was predominant in her life, and her home and heart were always open to others. With kindness, friendliness and sincerity, Jennie touched numerous lives within the community. She will be deeply missed.
Surviving are her children, Mrs. Robert (Helen) Mader of Myersburg, Mrs. James (Virginia) Neiley of Myersburg, Donald and Sylvia Anderson of Tunkhannock; eight grandchildren, Connie Eddy of Myersburg, Pamela Thompson of Lake Wesauking, Penny Wood of Myersburg, Vicki Lynn Hogan of Wyalusing, Candi Sue McKernan of New Albany, Clinton Anderson of Hornbrook, Randy Vanderpool of Spring Lake, Kay Johnson of Franklindale; nine great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Lewis, Jr. and Lillian Croft of New Era; a sister, Doris Simons of Elmira, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins and very good friends, Jim and Marilyn Place of Towanda RR2.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Clinton L. Anderson in 1959 and Carl W. "Curly" Ward in 1984; a brother, Harry Croft and a sister, Anna Vanderpool.
The family received friends on Thursday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda.
The funeral and committal services were held on Friday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Harry L. Ferguson, officiating.
Interment was in the Camptown Cemetery.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Skilled Nursing Unit, Memorial Hospital, 1 Hospital Drive, Towanda, PA 18848 in Jennie Ward’s memory.

- Thomas H. Soulsby, Jr., 62, well-known resident of RR2, Wysox, PA, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at Memorial Hospital in Towanda.
Born Dec. 7, 1940 in Elmira, NY, he was the son of Betty Johnson Little and the late Thomas H. Soulsby, Sr.
Thomas was employed at the Dibble Sawmill in Monroeton, Johnson and Herman Stone Quarry and also worked in the coal mines in Dushore. He attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Monroeton. Thomas enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving are his wife of 24 years, Nellie Strope Soulsby, at home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Dennis Manuel of New Albany, Dawn and Mark Bailey of Luthers Mills; three sons and daughters-in-law, James, Jr. and Rose Harkness of Bluefield, WV, Robert and Tammy Harkness of Durell and John and Chastity Harkness of North Orwell; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his mother, Betty Little of Florida; a sister, Denise Newman of Freeland; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
There were no calling hours.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, Towanda.
Marian McCarty

- Mrs. Marian E. McCarty, age 84, of Elkland Township, Sullivan County, PA, passed away with her family at her side on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at the Highlands in Laporte.
Marian was born May 3, 1918 in Forks Township, a daughter of the late Frederick and Harriet McCarty Driscoll. She attended Pleasant Valley Grade School and graduated from the Estella High School, a member of the Class of 1935. She married Keith Laverne McCarty of Elkland Township and at the time of his death in 1994, they had been married for 57 years.
Marian was a loving mother and grandmother. As a girl, she helped on the family farm at East Forks and continued to help Keith farm as he started a lumber business in partnership with her brother, Marvin Driscoll. She raised her large family and also worked for many years at the former Endicott-Johnson Shoe Manufacturing Company in Mildred.
Marian was a life-long member of the local Wesleyan Churches, attending both Lincoln Falls and Millview. In later life, she and Keith became part of the Living Hope Fellowship in Estella and she was also a member of the Women’s Aglow in Dushore. Her many kind and unselfish acts were a testament to her faith throughout her life.
Surviving are her four sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Ria McCarty, Williamsport, Theron and Joyce McCarty, Hickory, NC, Alvin and Martha McCarty, Angelica, NY, Jerome and Monica McCarty, Frederick, MD; four daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Samuel B. Norton, Houghton, NY, Linda and John Bassler, Oley, Marrolyn and Eric Landers, Forksville and Colleen and David Obert, Forksville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl and Alice Driscoll, Forksville, Marvin and Julie Driscoll, Canton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Eloise and Richard Brown, Warren, Doris and George Wells, Houghton, NY; a sister-in-law, Dot Driscoll, New Holland; a brother-in-law, Carl Pardoe, Dushore; 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two brothers, Dale Driscoll of Forksville and Wayne Driscoll of New Holland and a sister, Marguerite Pardoe of Dushore.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 11:30 a.m. at the Millview Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Nathan Hedge, her pastor, officiating. Friends called at the church from 10:30, Wednesday morning until the service at 11:30.
Interment was private in the McCarty Family Cemetery.
The family provided flowers and request that memorial donations be made to the Sullivan County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, 1948 Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701-3945.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore.
Elizabeth Masters

- Elizabeth Masters, age 87, of New Albany RR1, PA, passed away on Tuesday morning, Jan. 28, 2003 in Sweet Valley, at the home of her son.
She was born on April 26, 1915 in Hughestown, a daughter of the late David and Elizabeth Brown Olmstead.
On June 25, 1938, Elizabeth and Thomas J. Masters were united in marriage in Pittston. She was preceded in death by her husband on May 23, 1996.
In 1970, they moved to their home in Wilmot Township.
Mrs. Masters was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Zion Chapel in Dushore.
She enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers and baking for her family.
Surviving are her three children and their spouses, Thomas R., Sr. and Judith Masters of Sweet Valley, David, Sr. and Dianne Masters of New Era, Darrell R. and Lorraine Masters of Wilmot; her 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary F. Masters, Sr. on Jan. 25, 1994; two sisters, Rosella and Mary and by two brothers, David and Kenneth.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. in the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Zion Chapel, in Dushore, with the Rev. Robert W. Brown, pastor, officiating.
Interment will follow in Colley Cemetery.
The family invites friends and family to call on Friday evening, Jan. 31 at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Dushore from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Zion Chapel in Dushore, in her memory.
William Brotzman

- Mr. William McKinley Brotzman, Jr., who would have celebrated his 83rd birthday on Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 of RR1, Box 1110, Laceyville, PA, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at his home in Tuscarora Township, Bradford County, PA.
Born in Wilkes-Barre on Jan. 27, 1920, he was the son of the late William McKinley, Sr. and Geneva Smith Brotzman.
Mr. Brotzman was a graduate of the Laceyville High School, Class of 1938. After high school, he entered the U.S. Army and began his career, serving his country in the military services. During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater. He also served in the Korean War and later in the Vietnam Conflict. For 29 years, he served his country, retiring in 1969 from the U.S. Air Force, as a chief master sergeant. During his military career, he was stationed in Greece, Morocco and Hawaii.
He was a member of the West Auburn Baptist Church. Also, every year, he enjoyed the annual reunion with his military friends of the 8th Fighter Control Squadron. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling, gardening, square dancing and playing with his grandkids and great-grandkids. He also enjoyed feeding and watching birds in his yard.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, the former Allie Florence Clark of Laceyville; a son, Reed McKinley Brotzman of Laceyville; a daughter, Barbara Ann Myers of Kingston; a brother, Elston Brotzman of Silvara; two sisters, Rhea Ace of Laceyville and Pat Baldwin of Wyalusing; eight grandchildren, Tari Kelley of Clapper Hill, Ali Rene Aberle of Laceyville, Greggory D. Shotwell of Laceyville, Jeffrey Shotwell of Springville, Tiffany Shotwell of Laceyville, Nathaniel Brotzman of Lynchburg, VA, Verien Brotzman of Plymouth Meeting and Thane Brotzman of Laceyville; five great-grandchildren, Destiny Aberle of Laceyville, Timothy Kelley, Pamela Kelley and Jonathan Kelley, all of Clapper Hill and Brianna Shotwell of Tunkhannock. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Reed Brotzman and Ward Brotzman and two sisters, Eloise Nesslein and Kate Brown.
Abiding with Mr. Brotzman’s wishes, there will be no viewing or funeral service.

Mearl Brink
Jan. 28, 2003
- Mearl C. Brink, 84, widow of Leonard R. Brink, formerly a longtime resident of North Orwell and LeRaysville, PA passed away on Tuesday morning, Jan. 28, 2003 at Memorial Hospital in Towanda.
Mearl was born Nov. 11, 1918 in Auburn Township, Susquehanna County, PA, a daughter of the late Clark and Florence Sink Brotzman. On June 12, 1937, she married Leonard R. Brink. In June of 1987, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. She was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 23, 1987.
Mearl served as an Avon representative in the area for many years. Her dedication in life was to her family and home. Mearl was a member of the Beaver Meadows United Methodist Church and the Rushville Birthday Club. She enjoyed crocheting and crossword puzzles.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Fay and Pat Brink of North Orwell; her daughter, Helen Roberts of Warren Center; her daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Warren Roberts of Warren Center, Joyce and Robert Taylor of Allis Hollow; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; her twin sister, Pearl Repsher and her husband, Cecil Repsher of Laceyville; her sister, Ruth Cobb and her husband, Robert Cobb of Monroeton; two sisters-in-law, Viola Brink of Stevensville and Phyllis Brink of Wyalusing RR3; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by two grandsons, William Roberts and Joseph Roberts, Jr. and by two brothers, Francis and Bryce Brotzman.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. William Nelson, pastor of the Beaver Meadows United Methodist Church, officiating.
Interment will be in the Beaver Meadows Cemetery, Tuscarora Township.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Joseph J. Marlin

- Joseph J. Marlin, 56, of 1504 Hillcrest Lane, Downingtown, PA, passed away suddenly on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Brandywine Hospital, Coatesville, PA. Marlin was a former resident of the Wyalusing area and owned a seasonal home here.
Born in Rochester, NY, on July 31, 1946, he was a son of the late Joseph M. Marlin and Mrs. Katherine Marlin Roehrig of Rochester. He graduated from McQuaid Jesuit High School and Cornell University. On Dec. 31, 1966, he married his college sweetheart, Jane P. Patterson, of Crafsburg, VT.
Joe came to the Wyalusing area shortly a fter graduating from Cornell to work for Cornell Manufacturing in Laceyville and later joined Masonite Corporation in Wysox.
While in Wyalusing, he was very involved in Boy Scouting with his sons and hosted many "winter campouts" at his cabin near the Wyalusing Rocks. He also served as president of the Lions Club for several years.
In 1983 he moved his family to the Downingtown area and started work for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in King of Prussia where he was director of projects engineering. While working for Wyeth, he was in charge of engineering for all of Wyeth’s projects and traveled extensively. Joe retired from Wyeth on Dec. 31, 2002 with hopes of returning to Wyalusing with his wife, Jane to their cabin on "The Rocks."
His three sons, Joe, Tom and Dave, were his pride and joy. One of his true loves was boating on the Chesapeake Bay. He spent may weekends taking family and friends boating on the bay. Every Fourth of July holiday week for the past few years, they spent on the bay with friends from Sugar Run, Richard and Charlene Bennett.
He was an avid hunter and loved to hunt bear on Barclay Mountain and deer in Wyalusing with Richard. They spent many days of hunting season together with Joe and Richard’s sons and others at his hunting cabin.
For many years, Joe and Jane hosted picnics and bonfires at their cabin on Memorial and Labor Day weekends.
Joe also enjoyed traveling (when possible) to watch the games of his son, Dave, a professional hockey player.
He was a kind and generous man, who will be missed by many in the area who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Jane P. Marlin, of Downingtown; mother, Mrs. Katherine Marlin Roehrig and stepfather, Will Roehrig of Rochester, NY; sons, Joseph M. Marlin of Dale City, CA, Thomas A. Marlin of Coatesville and David M. Marlin of Downingtown; sisters, Maria Golden of Florida and Rebecca Knauff of Rochester; brothers, Christopher Marlin and Richard Marlin, both of the Rochester area; close friends. Richard and Charlene Bennett, Sugar Run; many stepbrothers, stepsisters, nieces and nephews.
The family received friends on Wednesday, Jan. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Donahue Funeral Home, 43 W. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown and today, Thursday, Jan. 23, from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Manor Ave., Downingtown. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held today at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s.

- Arthur F. Strohl, Sr., 77, of Elk Lake, PA, died on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003 at his residence. Born Jan. 3, 1926 in Beaumont, PA, he was the son of the late Francis and Arlene (Cook) Strohl. His wife, C. Marie (Ervine) Strohl predeceased him in 1998.
He retired from Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in Susquehanna County and enjoyed golfing and playing cards.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Gerald Westbrook of Elk Lake, Sarah B. and friend, Henry Dunn of Ulster, Rebecca and John Crist of East Greenville; sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur F. Strohl, Jr. of Susquehanna, Myles L. and Karen Strohl of Collegeville, Mark E. and Anne Strohl of Hereford, James C. and Amy of Meshoppen, David M. Leonard Wood

- Leonard L. "Red" Wood, age 79, formerly of Towanda and the Wyalusing Valley Retirement Home, passed away on Friday evening, Jan. 17, 2003 at the Bradford County Manor, West Burlington Township.
Born Sept. 23, 1923 in North Orwell, he was the son of the late Stanley and Winifred Russell Wood. "Red," as he was known by his many friends, was a graduate of Orwell High School, Class of 1941.
In early years, Red served as a salesman of the C.B. Scott Plumbing Supply Company and was employed by the Valley Lumber Company. For many years, he owned and operated a wholesale food supply company in the Towanda area. He was the former manager of several area state liquor stores for over 20 years and also served as a postal hauling contractor in the area until his retirement in 1991.
Prior to his declining health, Red enjoyed hunting, fishing, taking trips to Canada and woodworking. In recent years, Red enjoyed NASCAR racing.
Red was a member of the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Towanda; a lifetime member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 2191, Towanda and a member of the Independent State Store Union. Red was a former member of Towanda Borough Council for several years and was a former chief of the Towanda Auxiliary Police.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Tama Wood, who is a resident of the Skilled Nursing Unit, Memorial Hospital, Towanda; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerome P. and Nativa Wood of Mechanicsburg; a stepdaughter and her husband, Kathleen and John DeWan of Towanda; a stepdaughter, Rose Marie Dougherty of Rochester, NY; grandchildren, Jennifer Velasco of Granger, IN, Charlotte Adams of Poughkeepsie, NY, Patrick Wood of Mechanicsburg; sisters, Ida Chilson of Cadis, Marjorie Wheaton of California; his former wife, Rosemary D. Wood of Towanda and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Red was preceded in death by a brother, Lyle Wood.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, Jan. 20 at 10 a.m. at SS Peter and Paul Church, Third St., Towanda, with the Rev. Ronald Hughes, pastor, as celebrant.
Interment was in SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, North Towanda Township.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, Towanda. There were no calling hours.

Louise Fryer

- Louise S. Fryer, age 87, of the Carpenter Care Center, Tunkhannock, PA, formerly of Philadelphia, passed away on Sunday morning, Jan. 19, 2003 at Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock.
She was born in Scranton on Sept. 10, 1915, the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Parker Siegrist.
Ms. Fryer held a variety of jobs throughout her life, but she was a waitress most of her life.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Connie Fyer of Laceyville and John and Mary Jane Fryer of Ridley Park; two daughters and son-in-law, Elizabeth Wotypka, Boothwyn and Kathleen and Edward German of Severna Park, MD; three brothers, John Siegrist of Pottstown, Paul Siegrist of California and James Siegrist of Mora, NJ; three sisters, Hazel Siegrist of Carlisle, Ruth White of Huntsville, AL and Esther Rasmussen of California; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Wilemia Siegrist in 2002 and a son-in-law, James Wotypka in 2002.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 24 at 12 noon at the George Washington Memorial Park in Plymouth Meeting. Interment will be in the Memorial Park at the conclusion of the services.
Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville.
James Cullen

- James "Jay" Cullen, age 78, of Dushore, PA, died late Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 15, 2003 at Memorial Hospital in Towanda, following an illness.
A native of New Albany, Bradford County, he was born on Jan. 19, 1924, a son of the late Lawrence and Agnes Leahy Cullen.
Jay graduated in 1941 from New Albany High School. He worked briefly in Berwick before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. During World War II, he served aboard the USS Pasadena (CL-65) and saw action at Palau, Leyte Gulf, Luzon, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Tokyo Plains and other battles in the Western Pacific.
Jay became a career Navy man after the war, serving shipboard and shore duty tours primarily in Pennsylvania, California, Puerto Rico and Cuba. He retired from the Navy in 1964 as an Electronics Technician Senior Chief.
Jay and his family then moved to Dushore where he worked at Schaad’s and Dolly Madison in Dushore; at Sylvania in Towanda and at Procter & Gamble in Mehoopany, where he spent 16 years.
A member of St. Basil’s Parish in Dushore, Jay was active in the American Legion, VFW and Elks Club; coached Little League baseball and drove the Elder bus.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Clare (Walsh) Cullen; his daughters, Ellen and Pat; sons, Leo and Kevin. A third son, Timothy, died in infancy. Survivors also include four brothers, Francis and John of New York State, Lawrence of Florida and Joseph of New Albany; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and infant son, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sister Mary Laurena Cullen, I.H.M. and a twin brother, Patrick, who died in infancy.
Friends and family called on Friday evening, Jan. 17 at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The American Legion and VFW members passed in review on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Basil’s Church in Dushore, with the Rev. Michael Harris as celebrant.
Interment was in the St. John Neumann Shrine Cemetery, Sugar Ridge in Overton, with full military honors accorded by active duty U.S. Navy personnel, accompanied by the American Legion and VFW post members.
Visitors called on the family at Jay’s home at 108 Carpenter St., Dushore, after the ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, Bradford-Sullivan County Unit, 1948 East Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701 in Mr. Cullen’s memory.

- Sidney Paul Button, 67, of RR3, Box 282, Dallas, PA, died on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003 at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born May 14, 1935 in Spring-ville, he was the son of Claud C. and Esther (Haldeman) Button. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was employed by Operating Engineers Local 542 in Luzerne County.
After retirement, he worked as a mechanic at Hilbert’s Tractor Store in Dallas. He was a member of the Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company, the South Mountain Rod and Gun Club and member and former trustee of the Northmoreland Baptist Church, Centermoreland.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, the former Lois Jean Ander-son; a daughter, Brenda Bresnahan, Tunkhannock; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Sidney and Sue Button of Liberty, SC, Claud Miles and Sue Button of Plains; five grand-children, Ryan and Kelley Bresna-han and Claud Miles (C.J.), Cassie Ann and Jeremy Tad Button; three step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandson and a sister, Rebecca Staviscak, Wilkes-Barre.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 from the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 West Tioga St., Tunkhannock with the Rev. James R. Howell officiat-ing. Interment was in Lynn Ceme-tery, Lynn.
Friends called from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday.
Pallbearers were John, Ralph, Lyle, Nelson and Raymond Ander-son, brothers-in-law of the deceased, and Ryan Bresnahan, a grandson.

Nelsie Boardman

- Nelsie M. Boardman, age 69, of North Orwell (RR1, Rome), PA, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, Jan. 13, 2003. She was born on May 20, 1933 in Pike Township, a daughter of the late Andrew D. "Dick" and Ethlyn (Dimon) Manchester.
Nelsie was a graduate of LeRaysville High School, Class of 1951. She married her best friend, Donald L. Boardman on Aug. 4, 1951 and they established their home and family dairy farm in North Orwell.
She was a dedicated member of the North Orwell Union Church where she served as pianist and choir director, devoted many hours as a Sunday School teacher, served on the Administrative Council and Worship Committee and held many other church offices. Nelsie was known throughout the area for her extensive work in music ministry. An accomplished pianist, she gave piano lessons to many area residents and will be remembered for her unique ability to involve others in the joy of singing.
She was the founder and leader of the Community Singers and conducted their fall concerts throughout Bradford and surrounding counties. In addition, she organized, led and accompanied "The Messengers," a men’s singing group enjoyed by all. She especially enjoyed times spent with her church family and joint church choirs in Ocean Grove, NJ. Nelsie was dedicated to her community and was longtime president of the North Orwell Hall Association and was instrumental in organizing and catering countless fundraising dinners to assist others.
Nelsie is survived by her husband, Donald; her children, Nancy and her husband, Dale Holden of Earlville, NY; Deville and his wife, Susan Boardman of Rome; Linda Gibney of Stateville, NC; Andy and his wife, Missy Boardman of Orwell; Avery and his wife, Erica Boardman of Towanda; Amy and her husband, Mark Rejmer of Athens, GA; a friend, who was like a son to Nelsie, Keith L. and his wife, Joan Chilson of North Orwell; a sister, Madeline Allis of Silver Spring, MD; a sister-in-law, Mabel Manchester of Rome; 29 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
Nelsie was predeceased by her brothers: Leslie "Bud" Manchester, Ernest L. "Jid" Manchester, Leon D. "Rook" Manchester and a sister-in-law, Muriel Manchester.
Funeral services and a celebration of Nelsie’s life were held on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003 at 11 a.m., at the North Orwell Union Church, with Rev. Jane Bensley and Rev. Robert Martin. officiating.

- Neva May Beebe, age 71, of Overton, PA, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
Born on May 7, 1931 in Monroe Township, Bradford County, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Diana Platt Martin.
She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Overton and was a member of the New Albany VFW Post No. 384 Ladies Auxiliary.
Neva loved flowers and enjoyed time spent gardening.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Henry O. Beebe, at home; a son, Walter D. Beebe and grandson, David of Towanda; a son, Robert C. and wife, Mary Ann Beebe, grandsons, First Lieutenant Robert C., Jr. (Chuck), Matthew R. and Bradley W. Beebe of Rome; a son, Joseph H. Beebe, at home; daughter, Diana M. and husband, Ernest Molino, granddaughter, Erin A., stepgrandson, Christopher of South Williamsport; daughter, Linda S. and husband, Jerry Rushak, grandsons, Jerry, Jr. and Jeffrey of Cortland, NY and a brother, Harlow Martin of Middlebrook, MO.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Overton, with the Rev. Robert W. Martin, her pastor, officiating.
Friends and family called on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Bradford County Memorial Park in Luthers Mills.

- Bruce K. Singer, 72, of 22 Mt. Airy Estates, Tunkhannock, PA, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 14, 2003 at the Community Medical Center in Scranton after being suddenly stricken. He and his wife, the former Bertha M. Weaver celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary on Dec. 22.
He was born Nov. 29, 1930 in Ft. Totten, NY, son of the late Frank S. and Martha Root Singer.
He served in the Air Force and was a veteran of Korea and Vietnam, retiring as a staff sergeant in 1969.
He retired from Procter & Gamble, Mehoopany, after 22 years of employment. He was presently employed at the state Department of Transportation photo licensing bureau in Tunkhannock.
Bruce attended the Lemon United Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Legion Post #457, Tunkhannock; VFW Post #3583, Mehoopany; Odd Fellows Lodge 699, Lemon; member and board member, Wyoming County Historical Society and was a recruiter for Trooper Kristal Turner Childs of the Pennsylvania State Police. He was actively involved with the State Police/American Legion sponsored State Police Youth Week, held each June at Scotland School.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Leo O. Singer, Tunkhannock; a daughter, Ethel L. Singer, Sugar Run; two sisters, Betty Cote, Florida and Bea Hamilton, Chenango Forks, NY and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 17 at 11 a.m. from Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, with Rev. Edwin Simmons of Lemon United Methodist Church, officiating.
Friends may call Thursday (today) from 3 to 7 p.m.
Interment will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Tunkhannock.

William Whelan

William J. Whelan, age 64, of Doylestown, PA, formerly of Maple Glen, died on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003 at Doylestown Hospital.
Born and raised in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia, he was the son of the late John T. and Coretta Riley Whelan.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Doylestown and a former member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Maple Glen.
Mr. Whelan was a retired Spanish teacher at Episcopal Academy, where he taught for 28 years.
Mr. Whelan was the recipient of many awards at Episcopal including in June, 1993, the Bishop William White Award, given in recognition of dedicated service to the education and growth of Episcopal Academy students and the Raymond II Keegan coaching service award at Episcopal and he also was responsible for starting the Sunshine Club, which was endowed by the Academy when he retired.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Lisa K. Collins Whelan; his daughter, Christina M. Whelan, at home; a sister, Mary Teresa Sweeney of Wynnewood; two brothers, Edward J. Whelan of Blue Bell and Thomas J. Whelan of Bala Cynwyd and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, John T. Whelan.
Relatives and friends attended his funeral on Thursday evening, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at LaSalle College High School, 8605 Cheltenham Ave., Wyndmoor, PA 19038, where the family received friends from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Interment was on Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. in St. John Neumann Cemetery, Chalfont.

- Mr. Joseph W. Pilling, age 71, of RR3, Box 17-B, Meshoppen, PA (Shannon Hill), passed away at his home on Sunday evening, Jan. 12, 2003 after a long illness.
Born in Philadelphia on Oct. 17, 1931, he was the son of the late William and Dorothy Stevenson Pilling.
Mr. Pilling was a graduate of the Philadelphia West Catholic High School for Boys, Class of 1949. For 12 years he was a member of the PA National Guard, serving with the 111th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, as a Master Sergeant, discharged on Dec. 12, 1960. For 23 years, he was a policeman with the Philadelphia Police Department, retiring in 1979 as a Lieutenant.
He was a member of St. Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society of Meshoppen; a past member of the Tunkhannock Barbershoppers Choir and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Retired Police and Fire Association of Philadelphia, League of the Sacred Heart, Men of Malvern and the American Legion of Philadelphia.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, the former Beatrice V. (Ginny) Beecher Pilling of Meshoppen; a daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Rick Alfieri of Tunkhannock; three sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph, Jr. and Regina Pilling of Drexel Hill, Daniel and Tina Pilling and Richard and Lori Pilling, all of Philadelphia; also, seven grandchildren, Lorraine Jackson, Regina Alfieri, Ryan Alfieri, Daniel Pilling, Matthew Alfieri, Joseph Pilling, III and Catherine Pilling.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 9:30 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with a Mass of Christian Burial at the St. Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church in Meshoppen at 10 a.m., with Father Joseph J. Manarchuck of the church, officiating. Interment was in the Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill at a later date. Family and friends called at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, Jan. 14 from 7 to 9 with a vigil service to be read at 8:30 p.m.
Joseph Ross

- Joseph James Ross, age 84, of Hillsgrove, PA, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2002 at his home. He was born in Jeanette on June 18, 1918, a son of the late James K. and Nellie Dedcavage Ross. He attended local schools and began working in the Tower City area coal mines.
Joe married the former Mary Ann Yahemsky of Cass Township, Schuylkill County on Sept. 18, 1937. She predeceased him on Aug. 2, 1985.
Joe served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After the war, he continued in the coal mines until being employed by H. J. Williams Construction Company of York in 1955, where he worked as a mechanic until retiring to Hillsgrove in 1984. Williams was a large company that was involved in large road projects. Joe worked on the original construction of Interstate 81 and also the Blue Mountain tunnel on the PA Turnpike.
In retirement, he was an avid fly fisherman and also built cabinets and furniture for his home.
Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Marianne Ross, Franklintown, Margaret K. Ross and Jacob Spahr, Hillsgrove; sister and brother-in-law, Jennie and Albert Abrachinsky, Pottsville; two grandchildren, Nancy Jean May and Luke Sullivan, both of Dillsburg; a great-grandson, Tim Sullivan, Miami, FL; two nieces and two nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Ross of St. Clair.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Basil’s Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, pastor, presiding. Interment was in St. Basil’s Cemetery.

- Arlene Mae Ellis, age 61, of Friendsville, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 at Binghamton General Hospital. She was born in Johnson City to Rachel J. (Benedict) Johnson and the late Lewis R. Johnson. Her husband of over 40 years, Smokey Ellis, survives.
Arlene graduated from Vestal High School, worked for IBM for many years, loved to do ceramics and took ceramic classes with Julie Lewis for over 15 years. She also loved to swim, read, watch movies and e-mail. Arlene loved her babies, her dogs, Cody, Cindy and Gizmo.
Besides her husband and mother, Arlene is survived by her brothers, sisters and their spouses, Albert Raymond and Donna Johnson, Birchardville, Frank and Tiny Johnson, Friendsville, Dorothy Sperry, Vestal, NY, Linda Collins, Friendsville; a half sister, Joanne Andrie, Bullhead City, AZ; half sister-in-law, Betty Johnson, Sioux City, IA and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her father, she was also predeceased by an infant son, Danny and a half brother, Bob Johnson.
At Arlene’s request, the family will have a gathering of friends and family at a later date. She will be laid to rest in the family cemetery at the family’s convenience. Arrangements were made through the Daniel K. Regan Funeral Home.
Billy Childress

- Mr. Billy E. Childress, age 74, of RR3, Box 106, Meshoppen, PA, (Rushboro) passed away at the Community Medical Center in Scranton early Thursday morning, Jan. 9, 2003.
Born in Tazewell, VA on Feb. 1, 1928, he was the son of the late John Wesley and Grace Marie Pruitt Childress.
Mr. Childress was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, where he served his country from 1945 until 1948 in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.
From 1965 until 1972, he and his brother owned and operated Childress Brothers Dairy in Blairstown, NJ, after which the Childress family moved to the Meshoppen area and Billy worked as a herdsman for Sire Power in Tunkhannock until he retired in 1988.
He is survived by his wife, Luella Waldron Childress of Rushboro; four sons, William Childress of Branchville, NJ, Jeffrey Childress of Toms River, NJ, Michael Childress of Rushboro and Mark Childress of Stillwater, NJ; two daughters, Nancy Mikkelson of Blairstown, NJ and Theresa Hendershot of Westtown, NY; three brothers, Buddy Childress and Phillip Childress, both of Rushboro and Ronald Childress of Meshoppen; two sisters, Bonnie Headley of Oak Ridge, NJ and Shirley Conboy of Montrose; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlene Childress in 1999; three sisters, Edna Childress in 1932, Corine Benscoter in 1998 and Rose Marie Childress in 1973.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 5 p.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with the Rev. Gary Myers of the Meshoppen Biblical Baptist Church, officiating. Carl Campbell

- Carl E. Campbell, age 64, of Hillsgrove, PA, passed away at his home in the late afternoon on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003.
He was born on Oct. 23, 1938 in Estella, a son of Theodore and Martha Hess Campbell.
Carl was a veteran, having served in the United States Navy.
On Sept. 9, 1961, he married Connie Edkin in Hillsgrove. They had celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary.
On Dec. 1, 2001, he retired from PP&L as a serviceman, giving 32 years of service.
He spent most of his married life in the Hillsgrove area. He was a member of the Hillsgrove Union Church.
His other memberships include the Hillsgrove Fire Company, New Albany VFW and Highland Lake Manor 40&8.
In his younger years, he enjoyed playing baseball. He played baseball, coached Little League and played softball.
Carl enjoyed time spent in Atlantic City.
He left surviving his wife, Connie Edkin Campbell, at home; his mother, Martha Hess Campbell; three children, Frank and Sylvia Campbell of Hillsgrove, Michael "Mickey" Campbell of Overton, Julie and Scott Rutledge of Byhalia, MI; a sister and brother-in-law, Carrie and "Bud" Harvey Breniesen; three grandchildren, Allyson Rodie, Eric Rodie and Christina Rodie; four nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Theodore Campbell.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m. in the Hillsgrove Union Church, with the Rev. Phyllis Hunter, pastor, officiating.

Robert Holdren

Mr. Robert M. Holdren, well-known to his friends and colleagues as Bob Holdren, age 72, of RR2, Box 2297, Laceyville, PA 18623 went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday afternoon, Jan. 6, 2003 at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Silvara on March 8, 1930, he was the son of the late Burr E. and Daisy Miller Holdren. Raised in Skinners Eddy, he graduated from Laceyville High School in 1947, then continued his education at Lackawanna Business College in Scranton.
He started a 55-year career as a building materials salesman with Whipple Lumber Co., Inc. in Laceyville where he developed many lifelong friendships serving many contractors and clients throughout the Northeast.
A two-year interruption in his employment was a call to military service in the U.S. Army as a Private First Class during the Korean War. During his military years, he played and recorded with various groups and bands as a pianist throughout Kentucky, Georgia and Massachusetts.
He continued sharing his musical gift in various groups such as with his father Burr Holdren as caller at local square dances, The Doc Place Band, pre-show entertainment for the Local Barbershop Concerts, the Harford Fair, musical entertainment with John Bolles in "Memories & Melody," accompany his daughter, Melody, vocals, many solo engagements and more recently with the Dean Balcomb Band.
He was a member of the Belltones Gospel Group for over 20 years, played piano for the Braintrim Baptist Church Men’s Sunday School class since 1966 where he attended church and ministered at local nursing homes through his music and testimony. He was an exceedingly caring and thoughtful man with a keen sense of humor, who greatly loved his Lord, his family and people. Where his life and business took him, he carried his faith in Jesus Christ and loved to simply share it.
He also enjoyed hunting with his sons, attending his grandchildren’s sporting and school events and enjoying times together with his family. He has been a wonderfully loving and supportive husband and father, who is so dearly loved and missed.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, the former Doris B. LaFrance of South Auburn, along with three children: one daughter and son-in-law, Melody Holdren Montross and her husband, Dennis of Tunkhannock; two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank Holdren and his wife, Lori of Laceyville, and Torrey Holdren and his wife, Amy of Tunkhannock. Also surviving are his greatly loved grandchildren, Lorissa, Laci, Codey and Kiley Holdren; one brother, Harold Holdren; four sisters, Mrs. Bonnie Jayne, Mrs. Lolita Jayne, Mrs. Beryle Ciprich and Mrs. Norma Harrington and many other relatives.
Services will be held at the Braintrim Baptist Church on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Thomas Davis, the Rev. James Brock and Mr. Frank Baldwin, brother-in-law, will officiate. Calling hours will be Friday, Jan. 10 from 1 to 3 and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Braintrim Baptist Church.

- Rita L. Barrett, 72, of Deposit, NY, died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003 at her home.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles R. Barrett, on May 23, 2002.
She is survived by a daughter, Zandra Barrett, Deposit; two grandchildren, Sarah Salsman and Kevin Kingsbury; three great-grandchildren, Alex, Ebin and Christian; three sisters, Lee Ann Cohen, Ellenville, NY, Erie Amidon, Syracuse, NY and Landra Perry, Bath, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She had worked for many years for Valley Offset Printing in Deposit. She was a member and director of the Deposit Community Historical Society and member of Delaware Chapter #244 O.E.S.
Funeral and committal services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at the Zacharias Funeral Home in Deposit with Rev. Joseph Axtell, Pastor of the Sherman Bible Chapel of Sherman, Pa., officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Deposit, in the spring. Friends called at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the time of service. An Eastern Star Ritualistic Service was held at 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.

- Jessie Lou Johnson Vanderpool, 89, widow of Sheldon Vanderpool of Monroeton RR1, Monroe Township, PA, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003 at the Bradford County Manor, West Burlington Township, PA.
Born Oct. 23, 1913 in Springville, Wyoming County, she was a daughter of the late William and Lillie Springer Johnson. Jessie was employed by the Towanda Folding Box Company for 26 years and later by Sylvania Electric in Towanda for several years. She enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Laverne E. and Leeta Vanderpool of Mount Bethel; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Algy and Stanley Johnson, both of Tioga; three sisters, Lila Kinner of Laporte, Doris Baer of Shade Gap, Mary Van Campen of Texas; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sheldon Vanderpool in 1973; three sons, Charles Vanderpool in 1992, Gordon Vanderpool in 1996 and Algy Vanderpool in May 2002; two daughters, Albertha Beach and Virginia Vanderpool; four brothers, Sheldon, Paul, Noble and Ralph Johnson; two sisters, Mildred Johnson and Florence Jenkins.
The funeral service was held on Monday, Jan. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Jason Guillaume, pastor of the Powell United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in the Monroeton Cemetery, Monroeton.
The family received friends on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Clifford Roslund

- Clifford R. Roslund, age 86, of 13 Maple Lane, Tunkhannock, PA, passed away at Carpenter Care Center in Tunkhannock on Saturday evening, Jan. 4, 2003. He had been a resident of Tunkhannock for over 50 years.
Born in Locust Valley, Long Island, NY on April 15, 1916, he was the son of the late Johanus and Antoinette Simonsen Roslund.
He was married to the former Doris Learn and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 27, 2002.
He graduated from the high school on Long Island and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Juniata College, a Master of Science degree in School Administration from Bucknell University and did further graduate work at Penn State University. Mr. Roslund began his teaching career as a Science and Math teacher in Laceyville. From there, he went on to become a principal, assistant Wyoming County superintendent and superintendent of Tunkhannock Area Schools. He was the superintendent at Tunkhannock for 21 of his 35 years in public education. He was an Army veteran of World War II and attended the Community Bible Church in Tunkhannock.
Surviving are his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Ann of Clarks Summit; two grandsons, Jonathan and Brian Roslund. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry.
Funeral services were held at the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Stuckey of Community Bible Church in Tunkhannock officiating. Interment was in the Sunnyside Cemetery, Tunkhannock. Calling hours were held at the funeral home on Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 3 to 6 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice in Mr. Roslund’s memory.
Harold Manning

- Harold Ray Manning, 74, of 22 Manning Road, Tunkhannock, PA, passed away on Thursday morning, Jan. 2, 2003 at the Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock.
Born in Mehoopany on July 25, 1928, he was the son of the late Edson and Matilda Engelman Manning.
He was married to the former Marian Page and they celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on Nov. 10, 2002.
Harold was a graduate of Mehoopany High School and was a dairy farmer. A member of the National Rifle Association, he loved to spend time on his farm and enjoyed hunting.
He belonged to the Biblical Baptist Church in Meshoppen.
Survivors include his wife, Marian; two sons, Kevin of Tunkhannock and Roger of Suffolk, VA; one daughter, Donna Archer of Factoryville; three brothers, Stewart of Meshoppen, Robert, Arizona and Edward, Tunkhannock; one sister, Dorothy Rogers, Nicholson, four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Byron.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Biblical Baptist Church, Briar Ridge Road, Meshoppen, with Rev. Gary Myers, pastor officiating. Interment will be in Vaughan Cemetery, Mehoopany. There were no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Biblical Baptist Church, Briar Ridge Road, Meshoppen, PA 18630.

Francis Marcy

- A memorial service for Francis "Bubs" Marcy, who died on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. from the Meshoppen United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Daniel Herron, pastor of the Meshoppen United Methodist Church, and Mr. John Shaffer, Lay Pastor of the Evans Falls United Methodist Church.
Masonic services will be held at 1 p.m. prior to the service by Franklin Lodge #263 F&AM of Laceyville and by Meshoppen Chapter #70 Eastern Star.

Rita Barrett

- Rita L. Barrett, 72, of Deposit, NY, died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003 at her home.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles R. Barrett, on May 23, 2002.
She is survived by a daughter, Zandra Barrett, Deposit; two grandchildren, Sarah Salsman and Kevin Kingsbury; three great-grandchildren, Alex, Ebin and Christian; three sisters, Lee Ann Cohen, Ellenville, NY, Erie Amidon, Syracuse, NY and Landra Perry, Bath, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She had worked for many years for Valley Offset Printing in Deposit. She was a member and director of the Deposit Community Historical Society and member of Delaware Chapter #244 O.E.S.
Funeral and committal services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at the Zacharias Funeral Home in Deposit with Rev. Joseph Axtell, Pastor of the Sherman Bible Chapel of Sherman, Pa., officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Deposit, in the spring. Friends called at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the time of service. An Eastern Star Ritualistic Service was held at 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.
