JOHN RAYMOND HOPE, NATIONS TOP HURRICANE FORECASTER, SUCCUMBS AT 83
John Raymond Hope, whose lifelong career in weather forecasting brought international recognition of his achievements, died Thursday, June 13, 2002 from complications following heart surgery.
Mr. Hope was cited as the "voice of reason" when broadcasting during extreme severe weather for The Weather Channel. Other weather experts often acknowledged that when a hurricane threatened, Mr. Hope was "the man America watches." In 1999, USA TODAY Founder Al Neuharth ranked John Hope fifth among the nations top ten broadcasters. He was the only weather forecaster on the list.
Mr. Hope was born on May 14, 1919, the second of five children on a dairy farm in Stowell, PA. He attended grammar school in a one-room classroom that was often reached by a long walk through the woods in the snow. He was a struggling high school student in Wyalusing and Meshoppen, PA, following his mothers death in 1934. He worked at the local A&P grocery after his high school graduation in 1936.
Joining the Army Air Corps, he served from 1941 until 1945. His career in weather began in the service as a flight navigator; the last 30 months of his duty were spent in the Southwest Pacific Theatre. Like many of his generation, Mr. Hope returned home following the war with a new sense of purpose. He attended the University of Illinois, where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa and received his Masters of Science in Meteorology from the University of Chicago.
While attending the University of Illinois, he met the beautiful Bernice La Pira, to whom he was married for 55 years.
Mr. Hope began his career in the United States Weather Bureau in 1949 as a district forecaster in Memphis, TN, where he worked for nearly 13 years. He was deemed to have "the right stuff" by the Spaceflight Meteorology Group in 1962, joining the organization in Miami at the time of John Glenns launch. In 1968, Mr. Hope made a move to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Over three decades, Mr. Hope went from releasing and tracking weather balloons outside of the old Memphis Airport Terminal to working on manned space shots to the moon, and programming some of the then-largest computers in the world. Along with his National Hurricane Center colleague, Charlie Neumann, Mr. Hope wrote a program that allowed Third World countries lacking mass media infrastructure to alert coastal populations in advance of the possibility of a typhoon or hurricane making landfall. For this little-known technical work, Mr. Hope learned from visiting Chinese scientists in 1978 that he and Mr. Neumann were very well-known and appreciated in Chinas scientific circles.
Mr. Hope came to The Weather Channel in 1982 from the National Hurricane Center in Miami, where he had held the position of Senior Hurricane Specialist. This was the same year The Weather Channel was launched, and the fact that Mr. Hope joined its team of forecasters lent instant credibility to the fledgling all-weather network.
"John Hope literally personifies The Weather Channel to consumers, and he has been a pivotal person in our history," wrote Frank Batten, Sr., in his recent book, The Weather Channel: The Improbable Rise of a Media Phenomenon. Mr. Batten further stated that Mr. Hope was "a role model for our staff and a symbol of what we stand for integrity, expertise, reliability."
Mr. Hopes many honors included the U.S. Department of Commerce Silver Medal, the National Hurricane Conference Media Award and The Neil Frank Award from the National Hurricane Conference. He was a fellow of the American Meteorological Society. Mr. Hope wrote about weather for a variety of publications and journals, and he lectured around the world.
Mr. Hope semi-retired from The Weather Channel in 1997 when heart problems sidelined him, but after successful surgeries, his health greatly improved to the extent that he was able to continue on-air forecasting from 1998 through 2001. When asked about retirement, Mr. Hope would smile and acknowledge "You might wonder
but I can only say I love my work." He said there was "a certain satisfaction at my age, of being able to produce and be wanted by my employer." In 1999, The Weather Channel established a perpetual scholarship through the American Meteorological Society in Hopes name. In 2000, he traveled to Conway, SC, where he received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Public Service from Coastal Carolina University.
In a 1997 interview published by his hometown paper, The Rocket Courier of Wyalusing, PA, John Hope said, "If my legacy can be that I have made a contribution to this nation being better prepared to cope with the devastation wrought by hurricanes, and to have helped in the success of my company, I am content."
Mr. Hope is survived by his wife, Bernice; his daughter, Camille L. Hope of Macon, GA; sons, James C. Hope of Lilburn, GA, Dr. Thomas D. Hope of Macon, GA and Joseph R. Hope of Atlanta, GA; his brother, Leonard Hope of Dalton, GA and six grandchildren; eight nieces and nephews, who all live in PennsylvaniaJohn, Jim and Martha Meier, Bill, Dr. August, Patricia and Joan Weidner and Ruth Laylor. He is also survived by his cousin Hugh OMara of Stowell.
