Frances E. (Hallett) Hunter

- Frances E. (Hallett) Hunter, 55, of Canon City, CO, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Thursday, March 28, 2002. She was born on Sept. 21, 1946 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Maude (Holgan) Gottlieb and the late Frank Gottlieb.
Fran was a lifetime, full-time homemaker. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 21 in Canon City, the American Cancer Society and the VFW in Pennsylvania.
Fran married her current husband, Josiah Hunter on Sept. 23, 1995 in Las Vegas, NV. He survives and lives at their family home in Canon City. Fran’s first husband, Raymond Hallett, Sr. resides in Minnesota.
She is survived by her husband, Josiah Hunter; her mother, Maude Gottlieb of Sugar Run; brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Catherine Gottlieb of Oklahoma City, OK; a son, Frank Hallett of Washington, DC and granddaughter, Peyton Nichole of Dillon, CO; a daughter, Denise Dallas and granddaughter, Jordan Nichole of Onamia, MN; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Chris Adams and grandchildren, Kyle Anthony of Sugar Run and Shelby Lynn of Nicholson; a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond, Jr. and Michele Hallett and grandchildren, Amanda Mahally, Mikayla Renee, Raymond, III and Alexandria Nichole, Dushore; an adopted daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Marshall Lough and grandchildren, Jessica Marie, Charles Patrick and Maria Leigh of Parachute, CO; three stepchildren, Josiah Hunter, Jr. of Norfolk, VA, Amanda Hunter, of Cleo, MI and Heather Hunter, Indianapolis, IN; many aunts and uncles, as well as friends and friends of her children and grandchildren that she considered as her own children and grandchildren.
Her father, Frank Gottlieb, and grandson, A.J. Dallas, preceded her in death.
Our beloved wife, daughter, sister, aunt, mom, friend and grandmother will be forever in our hearts and greatly missed. Rest high on the mountain, Fran.
Memorial services were held on Monday, April 1 at the Holt Chapel of the Garden in Canon City. Funeral services will be held on April 7 at the home of Maude Gottlieb in Sugar Run at 8 p.m. with Rev. John Kita officiating.

- A memorial services for Irvin L. Hitchcock, who passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2002 will be held on Sunday, May 5, at 1:30 p.m. in the East Rush Church, with the Rev. Edwin Martin, officiating.

Taylor Leigh Birchard
- Taylor Leigh Birchard of Montrose, PA passed away recently. She was the infant daughter of Renee (Warner) and Lance Birchard.
Surviving are maternal grandparents, Ken and Joyce Warner of Rushville; paternal grandparents, Larry and Sheila Birchard of Birchardville; aunts and uncles, Eric Warner, Gregg Birchard and Autumn Wambold; maternal great-grandparents, Charles and Jacqueline Warner of Rushville and paternal great-grandparents, Seldon and Arlene Birchard of Birchardville.
There will be a private graveside service.

Norma M. McCarthy Anderson

- Norma M. McCarthy Anderson, 90, of Montrose, PA died on Monday, April 1, 2002 at Meadow View Senior Living Center, Montrose. Born May 14, 1911 in the Montrose area, she was the daughter of the late Israel M. and Miriam O. (Jagger) Sivers. On June 23, 1990, she was married to John R. Anderson, who survives. Her first husband, Joseph T. McCarthy, died in 1967.
She was an assembler in production for many years, including working at the former Bendix plant in South Montrose for more than 25 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert F. McCarthy of LeRaysville, Alan D. and Sally McCarthy of Montrose RR2; daughters-in-law, Nina McCarthy of LeRaysville, Darlene McCarthy of Abbeville, SC; a stepdaughter and husband, Patricia and G. Richard Olmstead of Wilmington, DE; stepson and wife, John W. and Heidi Anderson of Eugene OR; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Violet Sivers of Fairdale; brother-in-law, William Hannigan of Binghamton, NY; nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sons, Eugene E. McCarthy, Sr. and Martin J. McCarthy; a daughter-in-law, Yvonne E. McCarthy; granddaughter, Debra Ann McCarthy; brothers and sisters-in-law, Francis and Mildred Sivers, Robert and Catherine Coyle, Ernest Sivers, Rita Hannigan, Francis McCarthy.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 4 (today) at the Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., 74 Church St., Montrose. The family received friends on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

LaRue S. VanDeMark

- LaRue S. VanDeMark, age 59, of Wyalusing, PA, passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at Memorial Hospital in Towanda.
She was born on Nov. 3, 1942 in Kingston, a daughter of the late Corey, Sr. and Harriett Gromes Sickler.
On March 4, 1964, she married Joseph VanDeMark. They celebrated 38 years of marriage.
LaRue was a cook and had been employed by the Wyalusing Hotel, Mark’s Valley View, Betty’s Diner and had started at Lieberg’s Diner on Lime Hill.
She enjoyed time spent gardening, bird watching and she especially loved to cook.
She left surviving her husband, Joseph VanDeMark, at home; five children, Lorri and Rick Bellows of Wysox, Brenda Wheeler and Charles Birk of Wyalusing, Joseph VanDeMark, Jr. and Beth Alexander of Warren Center, Michelle VanDeMark and Donald Goble of Wyalusing, Maria VanDeMark of Camptown; sisters and brothers, Corey Sickler, Jr., Ted Sickler, Jr., Glen Sickler, Jean Mader, Betty Bates, Carol Wright, Cookie Argenio, Terry Sickler and Wayne Sickler; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Sickler.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 23 at 11 a.m. at the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing, with the Rev. Beverly Davenport, her pastor, officiating.
Friends and family called on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the memorial service.

Esther Jane Smiley Hope

- Esther Jane Smiley Hope, age 72, of Terry Township, PA, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2002 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
Esther was born Nov. 7, 1929 at home in Terry Township, daughter of the late Ivan and Ruth Bailey Keeney. She attended the Terrytown School and married Rodney Smiley of Granville Summit in 1945. Rodney predeceased her April 10, 1978.
Esther married James Hope of Lovelton on April 16, 1983. She worked for many years for the P&N Packing Company of Terrytown. She was a loving spouse and mother and very much enjoyed being with her grandchildren.
Surviving are her spouse, James Hope, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Chris Smiley, Terrytown; three daughters and sons-in-law, Ann Smiley, Terrytown, Penny and William Farley, Towanda, Debbie and Tony Kolodziej, Lime Hill; a brother, Charles Keeney, Spring Lake; six grandchildren, Nicholas Farley, Brenda Farley, Britney Kolodziej, Bryan Kolodziej, Samantha Smiley and Justin Smiley, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 25 at 2 p.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Kenneth M. Seegar, pastor of St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church, presiding. Interment was in the Wyalusing Cemetery.
Friends called on Monday at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Irvin L. Hitchcock

- Irvin L. Hitchcock, 86, of Montrose, PA, passed away peacefully at the Montrose Hospital on Thursday, March 21, 2002.
Born in Herrick Township on June 13, 1915, he was married to the late Wilma Oakes Hitchcock for 33 years. They operated Friendly Acres Farm in East Rush for 32 years.
Irvin was a school bus driver for Elk Lake School District for 26 years and was also an accomplished carpenter.
He was a member of the East Rush United Methodist Church and Willow Brook United Methodist Church, Sun City, AZ. He retired to Sun City in 1973 with his second wife, Evelyn Stevens Hitchcock.
Arizona is where he fell in love with the game of Lawn Bowling in which he was a championship bowler. Irvin was known to family and friends for his generosity and willingness to extend a helping hand.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Wilma; his second wife, Evelyn of 25 years; four brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include two sisters, Belva Very of Rush and Iva Hitchcock of Endicott, NY; his sons and spouses, Eldred and Donna Hitchcock of Binghamton, NY, Leonard and Lorraine Hitchcock of Montrose; a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Don Repsher of Laceyville; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; stepsons and spouses, James and Barbara Stevens of Hayes, VA and William and Betsy Stevens of Severna Park, MD; a stepdaughter and spouse, Sue and Willard Dyson of Springville and four step-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service at the East Rush Church at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the East Rush Church.
Mary T. Grippo

- Mrs. Mary T. Grippo, age 88, of RR2, Wyalusing, PA (New Era), went home to our Lord on Wednesday afternoon, March 20, 2002 at Memorial Hospital in Towanda. Mrs. Grippo was a resident of the Highlands Care Center in Laporte for the past two years.
Born in Newark, NJ on Jan. 1, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Sebastian and Kathrine Kremlick. Mrs. Grippo was the wife of the late Allen P. (Pete) Grippo, who passed away in 1982.
Mrs. Grippo was a housewife and homemaker for her family. She was a resident of Wyalusing since her retirement in 1977, having returned to the area from her hometown of Kenilworth, NJ.
She was a loving mother of two sons, Allen E. Grippo, MD and Raleigh, NC and Anthony H. Grippo of Wyalusing; a daughter-in-law, Kathy D. Grippo of Morrison, CO; a sister, Mrs. Francis Wilson of Kenilworth, NJ; five grandchildren, Ms. Lisa Grippo of Washington, DC, Mrs. Joan Grippo Main (Steve) of Florida; Mr. Thomas Grippo (Debbie) of Towanda, Mrs. Toni McCarty (Ron) of Wyalusing and Mr. Ed Grippo (Adrienne) of Exeter; three step-grandchildren, Steven Livermore of Tucson, AZ, Roy Livermore of Denver, CO and Heidi Confer of Wyalusing; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Beside her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Michael Kremlick, Sebastian Kremlick, Frank Kremlick and John Kremlick; two sisters, Johanna Reuter and Kate DeNizo and a great-grandson, Joseph Covert.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 23 at 10 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, with Rev. Barry Ballard of the Wyalusing Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment was in the Wyalusing Cemetery. Family and friends called at the funeral home on Friday evening, March 22 from 7 to 9 and on Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
Elaine M. Dobrosielski

- Elaine M. Dobrosielski died on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at her home in North Brunswick, NJ after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Nov. 22, 1949 in Binghamton, NY, raised in Pennsylvania, she lived in Old Bridge and North Brunswick, NJ.
She graduated in 1967 from Elk Lake High School in Dimock and graduated in 1971 from Mansfield State College in Mansfield.
She was a teacher of child care, home economics and consumer education at Middlesex County Vocational and Technical School in East Brunswick for about 30 years before retiring in January of this year. She also had a certification in Special Education.
Miss Dobrosielski was an advisor to students involved in V.I.C.A. (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) which holds vocational trade competitions.
She was a caring, loving and generous daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and teacher. She loved traveling, garage sales, shopping, gardening and cooking. Everyone who knew her at family events or V.I.C.A. competitions knew she would be somewhere taking pictures. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Surviving are her parents, Casimir and Rita Dobrosielski of Tunkhannock; a brother, Steven of Bowie, MD: a sister, Sheila of Tunkhannock, sister-in-law, niece, four nephews, an aunt and several cousins.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, March 26 at 11 a.m. from the St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church, Auburn, with Father Joseph J. Manarchuck of the church officiating. Interment was in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Family and friends called at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen on Monday, March 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. The rosary was recited at 4 p.m.

William Francis Collins

- William Francis Collins, 83, of Blacksburg, VA, died on Friday, March 15, 2002. Bill was born May 9, 1918 on the family farm in Laceyville, PA, the son of the late Francis and Agnes Collins. He was also preceded in death by a brother, James.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Vern; daughters, Virginia, at home and Catherine (Richard) Kinyon of Newfane, NY; a son, W. Dennis (Kay) Collins of St. Petersburg, FL; he had special influence on his four grandchildren, Amy, Brian, Chrissy and Billy; a sister, Eleanor Shaffer of Seneca Falls, NY; two brothers, Robert of Owego, NY and Walter of Laceyville; several nieces and nephews.
He served as a pilot in the U. S. Marine Corps for nearly four years in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. Upon his discharge, he returned to Penn State where he obtained his M.S. (1948) and Ph.D. (1949) degrees in Dairy Husbandry. He retired as a professor from The Food Science Faculty at Virginia Tech in June of 1984.
Mr. Collins was a member of the I.F.T., American Dairy Science Assn., American Assn. of Candy Technologies, International Assn. of Milk, Food and Environmental Samaritans, Gamma Sigma Delta, Phi Tau Sigma and Epsilon Sigma Phi.
Besides being a devoted family man, he enjoyed helping others through his many volunteer activities. He had served as chairman of The Blacksburg’s Unit of the Salvation Army and spent countless hours as an instructor for Virginia’s Hunter Education Program.
A memorial mass was conducted at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 706 Harding Ave., Blacksburg, VA on Monday, March 18 at 11 a.m.

Leona Carolyn Blocher Colglazier

- Leona Carolyn Blocher Colglazier, age 81, died on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
Leona was born Nov. 10, 1920 in Yonkers, NY. She attended the University of Delaware and enlisted in the Marine Corps in March of 1943. She achieved the rank of Master Technical Sergeant. Leona met her husband in the Marine Corps at Cherry Point, NC, beginning a 56 year marriage and raised five children while pursuing a career as personnel manager for several federal agencies until retirement in 1986.
Mrs. Colglazier was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Boyle Colglazier and her son, Donald Robert Colglazier.
She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Colglazier and Shirley Rollins, both of Greensboro, NC, Joan Colglazier of Isle of Palms, SC; a son, Roy Colglazier of Little Rock, AR and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 23 at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Street Chapel, with the Rev. Carlton Morales, officiating. Interment was in the Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Friends and family called from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 22 at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Street Chapel.

B. Paul Brodhun

- Mr. B. Paul Brodhun, age 86, of RR2, Box 2298, Second St., Laceyville, PA, passed away Tuesday evening, March 26, 2002 at Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock.
Born in Shavertown, on Dec. 9, 1915, he was the son of Boynton P. and Minnie Stroh Brodhun.
Mr. Brodhun was a graduate of Dallas Township High School, Class of 1934. On March 14, 1939, he married the former Jeanne E. Forscht, to whom he had been married for the past 63 years. From Sept. 1943 until Jan. 1946, he was in the U.S. Navy, serving in the United States for the Navy Shore Patrol.
Mr. Brodhun was employed by the GLF in Honesdale and later for the Agway in Laceyville for over 35 years, retiring in the late 1970s. While at GLF and later Agway, he was a plumbing and electrical technician.
He was a member of the Skinners Eddy United Methodist Church; member and past president of the Laceyville Rotary Club; past president of the Wyoming County Library Assoc.; member and past treasurer of the Laceyville Library; past member of the Laceyville Borough Council and past member of the Good Will Fire Company and the Laceyville Ambulance Assoc.
Since retirement, he had enjoyed time spent with his family. He and his wife enjoyed their many trips throughout the United States, where they both enjoyed golfing at many golf clubs on their trips. Mr. and Mrs. Brodhun were both members of the Shadowbrook Golf Club in Tunkhannock.
Survivors include his wife, the former Jeanne E. Forscht, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Bonnie Brodhun of Laceyville; two granddaughters, Deidri (Mike) Mullican of Laceyville and Denise Brodhun of LeMoyne, PA; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Mullican and Timothy Mullican of Laceyville; several nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Mr. Brodhun’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. At the convenience of the family, there will be a memorial graveside service at a later date.

Ellen B. Williams

- Ellen B. Williams, 72, of Neath, PA, died Sunday, March 17, 2002 at the Bradford County Manor in Burlington.
Born July 21, 1929 in Sayre, she was the daughter of the late Edward H. and Lida Barton.
On Sept. 28, 1957 she was married to Carlton G. Williams,
who survives.
A 1947 graduate of Neath High School, she furthered her education at Wilson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1950. She worked at Wilson Memorial Hospital as a registered nurse until 1955 when she became the first school nurse of the Northeast Bradford School District.
A member of the Neath Welsh Congregational Church, she was also a member of the Ladies Aid Society of the church. Additionally, she was a member of the Northeast Bradford Student Loan Association and the LeRaysville Cemetery Association.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Shelia and Calvin Bacon of Neath; six grandchildren, Jonathan, Heather, Sarah, Miriam, David and Antoine Bacon; brother-in-law and his spouse, Archie and Mary Williams of LeRaysville; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were held on Wednesday, March 20 at 11 a.m. at the Neath Welsh Congregational Church. The family received friends on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.
The family will provide all the flowers and suggests that memorial contributions be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Anita H. Rosencrance

- Mrs. Anita H. Rosencrance, age 85, of RR 2, Box 2960, Laceyville, (North Flat) passed away at Carpenter Care Center in Tunkhannock on Saturday evening, March 16, 2002.
Born in West Orange, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Albert J. and Freda Wolfle Harrison. She was the wife of the late Robert Rosencrance, Sr. who passed away on Dec. 1, 2001. She was married to Mr. Rosencrance for 63 years, being married on May 14, 1938.
Mrs. Rosencrance was a graduate of the West Orange High School. She was employed for many years as a cook at George’s Luncheonette in Laceyville from the mid 1950’s until the mid 1960’s. She later was employed by the Laceyville Elementary School (in the Wyalusing School District) as a cafeteria cook from the mid 1960’s until her retirement in the early 1980’s.
Mrs. Rosencrance was a member of the West Orange Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Ellen Cornell of Laceyville; three sons and their wives, Robert, Jr. and Sandy Rosencrance of Woodstock, GA, Alan and Susan Rosencrance of New Market, MD and Albert and Wen Rosencrance of Great Falls, VA; four grandsons, two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Fischer and Edna Brown, and three brothers, Melvin Harrison, Albert Harrison, Jr. and H. Alan Harrison.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 23 at 2 p.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main Street, Laceyville, with Rev. Charles Bishop, pastor of the Elk Lake Community Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Lacey Street Cemetery in Laceyville. Family and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the time of service.

William H. Moore, Jr.

- William H. Moore, Jr., 77, of Rush, PA, died Friday, March 15, 2002 at his home.
Born Dec. 11, 1924 in Montgomeryville, PA, he was the son of the late William, Sr. and Sallie (Heavener) Moore.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and the Merchant Marines.
A mechanic, he was the parts manager for Sherwood Chevrolet in Tunkhannock for 18 years. He also enjoyed collecting antiques, hunting and NASCAR.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Rosemarie Elizabeth (Irvin) Moore; daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Ricky Gregory of Montrose; sons and daughters-in-law, William H. and Linda Moore of Tunkhannock, Thomas I. And Cynthia Moore of Rush; six grandchildren, Jason and Erin Moore, Ryan Gregory, Shannon Smales, Dylan and Victoria Moore; four great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Donald Cressman of Norristown, PA; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Howard and Ann Moore of Hatfield, Harry and Arlene Moore of Hatfield, Robert and Kittie Moore of Nebraska; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, Glenn William Moore in 1980 and his brother, Bumps Moore.
Services were held Monday, March 18 at 11 a.m. at the Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., 74 Church Street, Montrose. The family received friends on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

- Kenneth M. Johnson, age 82, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 16, 2002 at the Phoenix Baptist Hospital in Phoenix, AZ.
He was born in Towanda on March 21, 1919, son of the late Clinton and Mertie Johnson.
Kenneth served in the U.S. Army for 12 years and was discharged as a sergeant. He and his family resided in Granville Summit until 1972, then moved to Horseheads, NY.
He worked in Horseheads at Westinghouse for 28 years and retired to Arizona. He had been a resident there for 22 years. Ken loved to fish and work in his yard and garden. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife of almost 56 years, Cleone Wells; daughters, Barbara Offenbacher and Shirley Fennell; a son, Kenneth E. Johnson; a sister, Eva Page of Wyalusing; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard, Martin and Theodore.
Funeral services were held at the White Rose Chapel, Glendale, AZ on Wednesday, March 20.

- Genevieve R. Hitchcock, 73, of Laceyville, PA, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2002 at Tyler Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was born in Oklahoma City, OK, to the late Arthur D. and Iva Emma (Houser) Hughes.
She was a member of the East Rush Methodist Church, East Rush Ladies’ Auxiliary, Fairdale Alliance and Lawton Senior Citizens Center.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Cleon Canfield of Laceyville, Laura and Rich Volack of Taylor, Janet and LeRoy Whipple, Jr. of Laceyville; four grandchildren and spouses, Dale and LaDeane Canfield, Jeremy Whipple, Bradley and Malindia Fassett, Shannon and Mark Sickler; five great-grandchildren, Donean, Atkinson and Erin Canfield, Collin and Daphne Ann Fassett; sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Bob Bowers of Joshua Tree, CA; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Tommy and Marcia Hughes of Klamath Falls, OR and Billy and Loretta Hughes of Columbia Falls, MT; several nieces and nephews.
Genevieve was predeceased by her husband, John Hitchcock in 2001; a son, Jeffery in 1964 and great-granddaughter, Montana Whipple in November 2001.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19 at the Daniel K. Regan Funeral Home, Montrose, with Pastor Nancy Russell of the East Rush Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in the Camptown Cemetery. Visitation was from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

- Perry Douglas Bullock, 87, Sarasota, FL, died on Tuesday, March 19, 2002. He was born Aug. 31, 1914 in Hazleton and came to Sarasota in1992 from Ruskin, FL.
A dairy farmer in Sugar Run until 1954, he retired in 1977 as a machinist. He was a Navy veteran and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Civilian Technical Corps. He was a member of the Senior Friendship Center in Sarasota. He was also a member of the Methodist Church in Hollenback.
Survivors include his wife, Renee; daughters, Joy H. Earthdancer, Binghamton, NY, Wendy B. Dial and Roberta R. Mann of Sarasota; a son, John of Binghamton; a sister, Ellen Long of Wyalusing; a brother, Christian of Wyalusing; two grandchildren, Katrina M. S. Dial and Angela R. Dial, both of Sarasota; a nephew and numerous nieces.
A memorial service will be held later. Interment will be private. Palms Funeral Home of Sarasota is in charge of arrangements.

- Mrs. Mary L. Black, age 81, of Main St., Laporte, PA, passed away at the Highlands in Laporte early Monday morning, March 18, 2002.
Born in Laceyville on Oct. 16, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Clifford G. and Eva Manzer Pickett.
Mrs. Black was a graduate of the Laceyville High School, Class of 1938, and also the Scranton Business College. After college she was a secretary for the PA State Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs.
Mrs. Black was a resident of Laporte for many years. While living in Laporte, she was a member of the Laporte United Methodist Church, the Republican Women’s Club of Sullivan County, the Laporte Women’s Club and a past member of the Laporte School Board.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, William T. Black of Laporte. Mary and William were married on July 8, 1943. Survivors also include a son, James A. Black, LTC (retired) and wife, Elizabeth of Fayetteville, NC; daughters, Christina L. Keller and husband, Neil of Jersey Shore and Paula J. Holcombe and husband, Richard of Novi, MI; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford Pickett in 1988.
Memorial graveside services will be held on Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m. at the Lacey St. Cemetery in Laceyville with Rev. Robert Brown of the Laporte United Methodist Church officiating.

Walter L. (Whitey) Armitage

- Walter L. (Whitey) Armitage, age 79, of Wysox, PA, passed away in the early morning hours on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at Memorial Hospital in Towanda.
He was born on Oct. 30, 1922 in Scranton, a son of the late James William and Addie Decker Armitage.
Mr. Armitage was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.
On Oct. 9, 1943, Walter married the former Hope Merritt. They had celebrated over 58 years of marriage.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by State Aggregates in Wysox as a truck driver.
He resided for over thirty years in this area.
A member of Towanda American Legion Post No. 42, he enjoyed time spent gardening, golfing and watching wrestling on television.
He left surviving, his loving wife, Hope Merritt Armitage, at home; four children, LeRoy Armitage and Amy Blowers of Wyalusing, Richard and Debbie Armitage of Florida, Dale and Laura Armitage of Wyalusing, Gary Armitage and Barbara Pierce of Wysox; a sister, Nellie Russick of Camptown; a brother, Howard Armitage of Stevensville; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Walter B. Armitage; a daughter, Rose Marie Armitage; a sister, Elizabeth and two brothers, Arthur and James Armitage.
Funeral services will be held (today), Thursday, March 21 at 2 p.m. in the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing, with the Rev. Beverly Davenport, pastor of the Wyalusing United Methodist Church, officiating.
Interment will follow in Camptown Cemetery.

Patricia "Trish" Isabel Dionne, age 45, wife of James Keister of Colorado, passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver, CO. She was formerly of Laceyville.
Born Sept. 14, 1957, she was the daughter of the late Al and Isebel Dionne of Laceyville. Trish was a 1974 graduate of Wyalusing Valley Junior-Senior High School and was employed by USA Wrestling. Trish loved to go camping, fishing and to play the slot machines in Cripple Creek. These were just a few things that she loved to do. She had so many close friends, along with the wrestlers that she worked with, that are going to miss her.

- Allen Webster Wright, 84, of 110 S. Higgins Ave., Sayre, PA, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2002 at the Robert Packer Hospital after an extended illness.
Born March 4, 1918 in Binghamton, NY, he was the son of John and Rosa MacIntyre Wright. He worked at American LaFrance in Elmira for 30 years, retiring in 1983. He was a former member of the Waverly Loyal Order of the Moose #1490 and a social member of the Skiff Bower Post #1536 VFW of Sayre.
He is predeceased by two brothers, John "Junior" Wright and Richard Wright; a sister, Delores Bair Deuil; a grandson; two granddaughters and a great-grandson.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Berneita Johnson Wright, at home; a daughter, Gloria Shaver of El Paso, TX; his daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and James McKean of Ulster, Beverly and John Strong of Wyalusing, Vivian and Joseph Harbst of Chemung, NY, Donna and Robert Farley of Athens, Barbara and Ronald Kline of Rome; a son, Jerry Wright of Sayre; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Carol Wright of Towanda and William "Red" and Pauline Wright of Sayre; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Dorothy Stilson of Elmira, NY; numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends called on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lowery Funeral Home, 225 South Main St., Athens.

- Eleanor Wood, 85, of Rushville, PA, died on Thursday, March 7, 2002 at Beverly Healthcare, Tunkhannock, PA. Born Jan. 21, 1917 in Rushville, she was the daughter of the late Ethiel C. and Grace (Goodell) Wood.
She was a member of the Rushville Presbyterian Church and was a lifetime farmer along with her sister, Dorothy Graham and her husband. For over 30 years she taught preschool children in the Sunday School and belonged to the Montrose and Binghamton Camera Clubs. Her slides on birds, animals and plants won many prizes and were included in slide shows that were shown around the country.
She is survived by a sister, Dorothy Graham of Rushville; one niece and spouse, Carolyn and Charles Lord of Bainbridge, NY; three cousins and their spouses, Rev. Richard and Esther Camp of Laceyville, Elizabeth and Dr. Andrew Wohlgemuth of Old Town, ME, Rev. William and Frances Gage of Philadelphia, and a friend and husband, Lorraine and Kendall Mitchell of Lawton.
Services were held on Sunday, March 10 at the Rushville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Joyce K. Warner officiating. The family received friends on Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church.

- Richard I. Warner, 54, of Montrose, PA, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2002 at the Endless Mountains Health Systems in Montrose after a battle with cancer. He was born in Forest Lake Township, son of the late Elmer F. and Pearl E. (Gardner) Warner.
His fiancee, Nonie Way, Montrose; son, Richard L. Warner, Jr., Hallstead; stepchildren, Anthony and Angela Olszewski, Montrose; two grandchildren, Brandon Swift and Katharine Olszewski; three sisters and their companions, Joy M. Letscher, Deposit, NY, Mary Lou Warner and Joe Blaisure, Montrose; Beverly M. Wood and Roger Hoyt, New Albany; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins survive Richard.
He was a graduate of Montrose High School, a member of the American Legion Gardner-Warner Post #154 in Montrose and an avid reader.

Robert S. Thomson, Jr.

- Robert S. Thomson, Jr., 71, highly regarded dairy farmer and agricultural advocate of Wyalusing RR4, Standing Stone Township, PA, died on Friday, March 8, 2002 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
Born Oct. 9, 1930 in Troy, NY, he was a son of the late Robert S., Sr. and Margaret Davidson Thomson. He was a graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Dairy Science. He served as a First Lieutenant with the U. S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean Conflict. On Feb. 2, 1952 Robert married the former Olive Cochran in Bethlehem. In 1955, Robert and Olive purchased their dairy farm now known as the Tor Tamarack Farm in Standing Stone Township and were later joined in partnership by their son, Keith.
Mr. Thomson served as a board member of the Eastern Milk Producers, 1988-1993; Milk Marketing, Inc., 1994-1997; Dairy Farmers of America, 1998-2001. He served for 25 years as a delegate for Eastern Milk Producers; six years on the state board of the Pennsylvania Council Cooperative Extension Association; 10 years on the State Board Pennsylvania Council of Farm Cooperatives and 12 years on the Bradford County Extension Board. Robert was board chairman of Eastern Lab Service, a subsidiary of the Dairy Farmers of America/Northeast Council. He also served as representative for the Dairy Farmers of America for the Pennsylvania Council of Farm Organizations, the Environmental Policy Committee of the National Council of Farm Cooperatives and the Livestock Committee of the National Council of Farm Cooperatives. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Towanda, the Penn State Ag Council and the Northeast Council of Dairy Farmers of America. Robert was a 40-year member of the Towanda Lions Club and was a past president and honored recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Olive Cochran Thomson, at home; four sons and daughters-in-law, Robert S., III and Jo-Ellen Thomson, Hellertown, Keith M. and Traci Thomson of Wysox RR2, Clay C. and Andrea Thomson of Newark, DE, Nelson H. and Mary Thomson of Hillsboro, NJ; 12 grandchildren, Anita, Eric, Amy, Robert, IV, Sean, Chase, Nathan, Caroline, Jacqueline, Alexandra, Owen and Emily; his brother and sister-in-law, Parker D. and Vann Thomson of Coral Gables, FL; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many good friends.
The family received friends on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the home of Robert and Olive Thomson in Standing Stone Township.
A memorial service was held on Monday, March 11 at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, Main St., Towanda, with the Rev. Maureen Hipple, rector, officiating.
Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Towanda.

Charles B. Singer

- Mr. Charles B. Singer, age 83 of RR2, Box 2069, Laceyville, PA (Indian Hill) passed away at Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock on Tuesday afternoon, March 12, 2002.
Born on Indian Hill, Tuscarora Township, Bradford County, on Feb. 27, 1919, he was the son of the late Sam and Sybil King Singer.
Mr. Singer was a graduate of Laceyville High School, Class of 1937, after which he became a dairy farmer, farming his entire life on his farm on Indian Hill.
He enjoyed being surrounded by his family and friends. In his spare time, he enjoyed the love of the outdoors and especially having a garden.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, the former Mildred Brown Singer; two daughters and their husbands, Charlene and Keith Repsher of Laceyville, Connie and David Wood of Wyalusing; a brother and his wife, Darrell and Charlotte Singer, Delhi, NY; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Maynard, Jack and Andrew Singer.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 16 at 10 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, with Rev. Mark King of the First Baptist Church of Galeton, officiating. Ralph Donald Shaffer, (RD)

- Ralph Donald Shaffer, (RD), 85, of Wyalusing, PA died on Monday, March 11, 2002 as a result of an automobile accident.
He was born on Aug. 8, 1916 in Sheshequin, a son of the late Fred E. and Ella Kintner Shaffer.
Ralph was a graduate of Camptown High School and had been a lifetime resident of he Wyalusing area.
Prior to his retirement, he was engaged in farming and was also a rural route U. S. mail carrier.
He was a member of the Wyalusing United Methodist Church.
Other memberships included 58 years with Wyalusing Lodge No. 618; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Towanda and Williamsport; 50 years with the Irem Temple of Dallas and the Towanda Country Club. Also, he was a lifetime member of the Towanda Gun Club; a lifetime member of the Towanda Elks B.P.O.E. No. 2191 and a social member of the Wyalusing American Legion Post #534.
Ralph was an avid bowler and accumulated many trophies over his lifetime. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing softball. He enjoyed any opportunity to go snowmobiling with his friends, golfing, hunting, fishing or to spend time in the out of doors.
He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Calvin and Doris Shaffer of Wyalusing; two sisters, Eva McNichol Alexander of Julian and Louise Roenning of Vermont and PA; a sister-in-law, Margot Shaffer of Wyalusing; many nieces and nephews and many friends who loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harlan and Fred Shaffer and two brothers-in-law, Sam McNichol and George Roenning and a niece, Linda Roe.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 16 at 11 a.m. in the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing, with the Rev. Beverly Davenport, his pastor, officiating.
Friends and family are invited to call on Friday evening, March 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. and March 16 from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
A Masonic Funeral Service will be held on Friday evening in the funeral home at 5:45 p.m.

Evelyn A. "Lynne" Matlack

- Evelyn A. "Lynne" Matlack (nee Arey), age 78, of Broomall, PA, died at home on Thursday, March 7, 2002 after a long illness.
Born and raised in the Wyalusing area, Mrs. Matlack lived in Broomall for over 47 years.
She was a graduate of Camptown High School and Palmer Business School in Philadelphia. She served in the U. S. Navy during and after World War II. Before becoming a full-time homemaker, she held several secretarial positions and later worked as a teacher’s aide in special education. Mrs. Matlack was a longtime and active member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Broomall.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, George L. Matlack; her son, George L. Matlack, Jr.; her daughter, Karen L. Matlack; three sisters, Alice Armitage, Louise Ross and Anna Meas; four brothers, James Arey, Paul Arey, Edward Arey and Kenneth Arey.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 15 at 12 noon at the Robert L. D’Anjolell Memorial Home, 2811 West Chester Pike, Broomall, where the family will receive visitors after 11 a.m. Interment will be private.

Doris F. Lauricello

- Doris F. Lauricello of Herrickville, PA, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2002 at the Intensive Care Unit of the Memorial Hospital in Towanda.
Doris was born in Essex, England, a daughter of the late John and Mary Vine Finch. She met John J. Lauricello of Clifton, NY while he was stationed in London with the U. S. Army Air Force during World War II. They were married in New Jersey on Nov. 23, 1946 and resided there until retiring to Herrickville in 1984.
Doris was a loving spouse, mother and grandmother. She was a very nurturing and caring individual who was kind and tender to all that she encountered. She enjoyed gardening, knitting and spending time with her grandchildren.
Doris was a member of the Herrickville United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her spouse, John, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Doreen and Brian Roehrig, Herrickville; four grandchildren, Erin Arnold, Herrickville, Heather Baker, Philadelphia, Matthew and Patrick Roehrig, Herrickville; two great-grandchildren, Jasmyn and Jade Roehrig and several nieces and nephews.
Doris was predeceased by a grandson, Shannon Roehrig; three brothers, William Finch, Leonard Finch and a twin, George Finch, and a sister, Olive Higgins, all of England.
A memorial service was held at the Herrickville United Methodist Church on Monday, March 11 at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Helen Learn, her pastor, officiating.

Kenneth Hugo

- Kenneth Hugo, a lifetime resident of New Albany, PA, died at the age of 68 years on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre due to medical complications. Kenneth was born on Sept. 21, 1933 in New Albany and is the son of Ivan Hugo and the late Helen Vogel Hugo and Ivan’s wife, Grace Hugo of New Albany. Kenneth is survived by his wife of 44 years in marriage, Virginia Jordan Hugo of New Albany.
Kenneth "Little Ivan" graduated from New Albany High School in 1951 before joining the United States Navy where he served his country during the Korean Conflict before being honorably discharged in 1954.
After briefly attending Pennsylvania State University, Erie Barber and Beauty College, he met his lifetime wife, Virginia. They returned to New Albany and established a longtime barber and beautician practice.
Kenneth is also survived by his four loving children, Tamra, Perry, Tracy and Sidney Hugo; five beloved grandchildren, Autumn, Madalyn, Angelica, Zachary and Quentin and the first cherished grandchild, Justin, who recently preceded him in death.
Kenneth was the brother of Howard Hugo and wife, Doris of New Albany, Bernice Yonkin and husband, Art of Dushore, Pauline McMahon and husband, Jim of New Albany and Carolyn Rider and husband, Harold of Eagles Mere. He was also a caring uncle to eleven nieces and sixteen nephews; a nephew to Florence Hugo Palmer of New Albany, Maynard Hugo and wife, Belva of New Jersey; the late Leon Hugo and wife, Leah of New Albany and the late Harold Hugo and late wife, Millie of Eldredsville.
Kenneth was a self-employed professional barber for 41 years and was an employee of Ingersoll Rand Company in Athens, before retiring in 1977, after 24 years of dedicated service. Kenneth was a member of the New Albany Methodist Church and held life memberships in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #384 in New Albany and the Elks Lodge #2191 in Towanda.
He enjoyed traveling and visiting with his family and the sport of fishing. Kenneth had a passion for barbering where he regularly discussed current affairs and "spun yarns" with his clients before being declared legally blind in 1999. Kenneth was also a faithful walker since undergoing heart surgery in 1998.
A memorial service was held at the New Albany Baptist Church on Monday, March 11 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Ronald Troup presiding.

- Cleone Irene Simons Foote, 78, of 12 Bee St., Laceyville, PA, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2002 at the Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock surrounded by her family.
Born Sept. 9, 1923 in Rome, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Lela VanSice Simons. Cleone attended the Rome School and was employed by Mindy Sue, Inc. in Laceyville and by several area dress factories until her automobile accident in 1985.
Cleone enjoyed Wednesday afternoon visits from her family, playing bingo and the lottery and playing cards with her care givers.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Lloyd and Dawn Fox of Laceyville, Philip and Mary Jane Fox of Florida and Richard and Jennie Fox of Mehoopany; 10 grandchildren, Latrenda and Harry Fassett of Rush, David and Wendy Fox of Tunkhannock, Lisa and Eddie Latini of Wyalusing, Dale and Jeneane Fox of Lawton, Mary Fox of Sayre, Angel and Tom Joerg of Florida, Amiee and Jan Lamphere of Monroeton, Mike Fox of Tunkhannock, Tim Fox of North Carolina and Amanda Fox of Mehoopany; 18 great-grandchildren; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Mildred Bates of Stevensville, Beverly and Don Manvell of Rome and Margie Shores of Rome; a brother, Gary Bates of Little Meadows; an aunt, Ina Mills of Stevensville; an uncle, Lloyd VanSice of Sayre and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold "Jack" Fox in Jan. 1963; her second husband, Frank Foote in Jan. 1997; an infant son in 1943; a brother, Carl Simons and her stepfather, William Bates.
The funeral services were held Tuesday, March 12 at 2 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Ann Blair, pastor of the Skinners Eddy United Methodist Church, officiating.
Interment was in the Rome Cemetery, Rome.
The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday evening and one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home.

Catherine M. Elden, R.N

- Mrs. Catherine M. Elden, R.N. of Mt. Rainier, MD, formerly of Mildred, PA, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2002 at the Mariner Health of Kensington, MD.
Catherine was born in Mildred on Oct. 17, 1917, a daughter of the late John Matthew and Josephine Cecelia O’Connor Reagan. She graduated from the Catholic High School in Altoona in 1935 and from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Altoona in 1939.
Catherine worked in the Washington, DC area most of her life and primarily at Providence Hospital and Doctor’s Hospital.
Surviving are her children, Josephine A. Komiske, Silver Spring, MD, Thomas C. Elden, Easton, MD, Michael J. Elden, Ellicott City, MD, Patricia E. Elden, Ocean City, MD, Mary Lee Brown, Silver Spring, MD, Catherine Elden, Pittsburgh, John W. Elden, Fredericksburg, MD, Christopher T. Elden, Gaithersburg, MD; three sisters, Josephine Pfeiffer, Honeoye, NY, Christine McDonald, Hyattsville, MD, Helen Dean, Upper Marlboro, MD; a brother, Carlos Reagan, Rochester, NY; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, March 11 at St. James Catholic Church, Mt. Rainer, MD. Burial was at 3 p.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery, Mildred, with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, pastor, presiding.
Arrangements are under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore.
Gerald E. (Red) Brown

- Mr. Gerald E. (Red) Brown, age 65, of RR1, Box 1040, Laceyville, PA (Skinners Eddy) passed away on Monday evening, March 11, 2002 at the Hospice Unit of the Mid Valley Hospital in Peckville.
Born in Jenningsville on Aug. 21, 1936, he was the son of the late Claude and Edna Brown. His wife, the former Beverly J. Heeman, preceded him in death on Oct. 4, 1991.
Red was a graduate of Laceyville High School, Class of 1954, after which he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he was stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC.
For the past 26 years, he was part owner and operator of Table Rock Hotel, Inc. in Laceyville.
He was a member of the Wyalusing American Legion Post #534 and the Marine Corps League.
Surviving are his daughter, Deborah L. Brown Merritt of Laceyville; a son and daughter-in-law, Danny P. and Robin Brown of Richmond, VA; a sister, Grace Ely of Wyalusing; a brother and sister-in-law, Elwood (Ike) and Edith Brown of Lovelton; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a special friend, Bob Place of Jenningsville. Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Brown and Robert Brown.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 15 at 11 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, with Rev. Charles Bishop of the Elk Lake Community Church, officiating. Interment will be in the North Flat Cemetery, Laceyville. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Graveside military services will be accorded by members of the Wyalusing American Legion Post #534 and the Marine Corps Military Honor Guard.

Carlton Brewer

- Mr. Carlton Brewer, age 72, of Franklin Towers, Portland, ME, formerly of Meshoppen, PA, passed away at the Maine Medical Center, Portland, ME early Tuesday morning, March 12, 2002 after a long struggle against diabetes.
Born on Bunnell Hill, Meshoppen, on July 23, 1929, he was the son of Thelma LaFrance Brewer and the late Edward Farr Brewer, Sr.
Mr. Brewer was a graduate of the Meshoppen High School, Class of 1947. He attended Ithaca College, East Stroudsburg State Teacher’s College and was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force.
Carl’s passion in life was acting and he brought much enjoyment to the many who saw him in his numerous roles throughout his career. His love for acting began at Meshoppen High School, where he was always involved in the school play productions. He pursued acting at Ithaca College. For many years, he played in summer stock companies and appeared with numerous theatrical groups in the Poconos, New York, New Orleans and Portland, ME. While in the Air Force, he performed in the special services theater productions.
He is survived by his mother, Thelma LaFrance Brewer, a resident of the Greenley Personal Care Home in Tunkhannock; two brothers, Edward Brewer, Jr. of Shavertown and Richard Brewer of Tunkhannock, two nieces and three nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m. at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with Rev. Edmund Simmons, officiating. Interment will be in the Overfield Cemetery, Meshoppen. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 12 noon until the time of the service.
Candis Cecelia Bonnell

- Candis Cecelia Bonnell, 15-month-old daughter of Robert L., Jr. and Jennifer M. Kipp Bonnell of RR3, Wyalusing, PA, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2002 at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
Candis was born in Sayre on Dec. 12, 2000.
She is survived, in addition to her parents, two brothers, Robert Bonnell, III and Doyle Bonnell; two sisters, Vanessa Bonnell and Jessica Bonnell; paternal grandfather, Robert Bonnell, Sr. of Louisiana and paternal grandmother, Jean Takach of Trout Run; paternal great-great-grandmother, Margaret Bastion of Ralston; maternal grandmother, Candis Kipp and companion, Robert Benedict of Canton; maternal great-grandmother, Carol Kipp of Canton; stepgrandfather, John Updegraff of Indiana and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by Gordon Mapes on June 3, 1999; Arthur Kipp, Nov. 3, 1998; Doyle Kipp, Sept. 19, 1998; Dorothy Kipp, March 31, 1984.
Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, March 14 at 10 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Beverly Davenport, pastor of the Wyalusing United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Bradford County Memorial Park.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
Kenneth S. Williams

- Kenneth S. Williams, age 81, of Wyalusing, PA, passed away on Friday, March 1, 2002 at Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit in Towanda.
He was born on Oct. 21, 1920 in Camden, NJ, a son of the late John Thomas and Florence Bennett Williams.

Mr. Williams was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served during World War II.

He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master’s Degree from Bucknell University.

On July 1, 1946 he married the former Marietta J. Slivinske of Wilkes-Barre. They have enjoyed a loving and devoted marriage of 55 years.
In 1954, Mr. Williams moved to Wyalusing to assume the position of principal for Wyalusing High School. He was involved in the jointure of the Camptown, Laceyville, New Albany and Wyalusing schools forming the Wyalusing Valley High School and retired as principal of Wyalusing Valley High School in 1980.

- He was a member of the Wyalusing United Methodist Church and has held various church offices and was a member of the church choir.
His other memberships include The Pennsylvania Association of Secondary High School Principals, of which he was a past president; Wyalusing American Legion Post #534, Towanda VFW, Wyalusing Choraliers, Masonic Lodge No. 618 F&AM and is a past master, having served in 1963.

- He worked and was involved with the local chapter of the American Red Cross and was a member and had been a driver for the Wyalusing Ambulance Association.

Mr. Williams was an avid supporter of local sporting and musical events. He enjoyed time spent fishing, gardening, reading and cooking.

Surviving are his wife, Marietta (Met) J. Williams, at home; four children and their spouses, Kerry Dibble of Wyalusing, Craig and Scotti Williams of Berwyn, Laurie and Craig Manney of Stevensville, Steve and Barb Williams of Canton; his sisters, Olwen Overman of Shavertown, Blanche Williams of Wilkes-Barre; a sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Edward T. Kosek of Frederick, MD; 10 grandchildren, Heather and Ben Dibble, Kassie, Jessica and Abby Williams, Josh, Tim and Becca Manney, Katie and Kenny Williams and by many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at the Wyalusing United Methodist Church on Tuesday, March 5 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Beverly Davenport officiating.

Ethel Gladys Fisk Mapes

- Ethel Gladys Fisk Mapes, 92, of RR2, Wyalusing, PA, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2002 at the Highlands Nursing Home, Laporte.
Born on Dec. 4, 1908 in Wilmot Township, she was a daughter of the late Clyde and Mary Freudenberger Fisk.
On July 3, 1926, Ethel married Bruce Mapes. He preceded her in death on Nov. 26, 1986.
She was a devoted wife and mother and spent most of her life caring for her children and grandchildren. For a time, she worked for the Wyalusing School District as a custodian, retiring in 1972. Ethel enjoyed doing errands and helping others. She helped care for many of her community friends by staying nights with them and helping in whatever way she could to make their lives easier.
Mrs. Mapes was a member of the Moxie Community Church.
Ethel is survived by her children, Joyce Armitage, Laurence and Sherelle Mapes, Freda and James Canfield, Merna Calwell and Alberta Parks; grandchildren, Edward L. and Darlene Mapes, Kenneth H. and Barbara Mapes, Charles and Pamela Mapes, Fern and David Davis, Shelly and Charles Ross, Jodi and John Mapes-Swain, LaVerne and Marie Saxer, Lorene and Jerry Ackley, Kathy Shoemaker, Bret and Conny Shoemaker, Brenda and Thomas Miller, Tami and Andrew Laco, Timothy and Kim Mapes, Hope and David Jordan, Renee and Ronald Mapes-Babcock, Laurence, II and Tarena Mapes, Steve and Melissa Canfield, Victor and Tammy Canfield and Brian and Michelle Canfield; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren and two sisters, Pearl Dyer and Evelyn Fisk.
She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth W. Mapes; daughter-in-law, Ruth Mapes; grandsons, Lonnie Saxer and Gordon Mapes; brothers, Adrian Fisk, Cortez Fisk, Bradley Fisk and Clayton Fisk.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 7 at 1 p.m. in the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing, with her grandsons, LaVerne Saxer and Steven Canfield, officiating.
Family and friends called at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
Interment will be in the Terrytown Cemetery.

Richard D. "Dick" Cotton

- Richard D. "Dick" Cotton, 60, of RR4, Montrose, PA passed away quietly at home on Friday, March 1, 2002. He was born in Harrisonburg, VA on Oct. 18, 1941. He was adopted seven days later by Kenneth Bernadette Cotton and Mildred Ford Smith Cotton and lived and grew up in Lynbrook, Long Island.
He attended Lawrence High School, graduating in 1961, the International Brotherhood Electrical Workers (IBEW) apprenticeship training program from 1961-1964 and the Local 25 IBEW foreman school from 1964-1965. He worked for JV Electric in Hicksville, NY. Dick also worked for several electrical contractors on Long Island. In Dec. of 1977, Procter & Gamble in Mehoopany employed him.
He was a member of Hewlett Bay Fire Department, Hewlett, NY, from 1961 to 1965 and rose to the office of captain of Rescue Company #1. From 1965-1970, he was a part of North Massapequa Fire Department Engine Company #2. From 1978 to 1984, he was in the Meshoppen Fire Department and rose to the office of assistant chief. He was also second assistant chief of the NEPA Federation of Firefighters. He was paralyzed in an auto accident in 1984, thus ending his volunteer fire fighting.
His first wife, Judith Ann Hemmer, whom he married in Aug. 1965, survives him. Together, they had four children, Richard Donald Cotton, Jr., Kenneth Brian Cotton, Jennifer Lee Cotton, Michael John Cotton; grandchildren, Desiree Cotton, Jessa Harvey, Abby Newhart, Natalie Newhart, Tory Newhart, Kenny and Kati Cotton.
He was remarried on April 1, 1997 to Darlene Squiers Lee. They were married 59 months to the day. Also surviving are a stepson, Justyn (Zeke) Lee and his lifelong friend, since age two, Peter DeValle from Lynbrook, NY.
He was preceded in death by an older infant brother, Robert, and father in 1985 and mother in 2000.
Services were held at 4 p.m., Monday, March 3 at the Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., 74 Church St., Montrose. The family received friends on Monday from 2 p.m. until the time of the service.
The family provided their own flowers and suggests that memorial contributions be made to the fundraising efforts for the new weight room for the Montrose area football team, Montrose Junior-Senior High School, RR3, Box 28, Montrose, PA 18801.
