Pauline Anna Pickering
May 31, 2002
Mrs. Pauline Anna Pickering, age 67, of RR2, Box 204, Meshoppen, PA (South Auburn) passed away at the home of her daughter in Laceyville on Friday afternoon, May 31, 2002 after a long illness.

Born in Scottsville on March 18, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Leland and Marion Brown Long.

Mrs. Pickering attended the Meshoppen High School. She was later employed by the Titchener Manufacturing in Binghamton for eight years. She was later employed, as a clerk by Montrose Dry Cleaners in their Tunkhannock branch for over 17 years, retiring in 1997.

She attended the Transue Community Church and was a member of the Good Will Fire Company Auxiliary in Laceyville. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her family. She also enjoyed playing cards and working puzzles.

Surviving are her husband of 33 years, Maurice B. Pickering of South Auburn; three daughters, Judith A. Woodruff of Montrose, Jane and husband, Larry Overfield of Meshoppen and Jenny and husband, Rusty Newhart of Laceyville; three sons, Richard and wife, Aggie Hitchcock of Silvara, Albert Hitchcock and friend, Cindy Spencer of Black Walnut and Michael and wife, Vicki Hitchcock of Retta; one sister, Mrs. Doris Carter, Meshoppen; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Edward Hitchcock in 1966; a brother, Edward Long in 1988; a sister, Helen Donahue, who passed away April 25, 2000 and a great-grandson, Clay Manning, who passed away on Jan. 10, 2000.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 4 at 11 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, with Rev. Charles Bishop of the Transue Community Church, officiating. Interment was in the North Flat Cemetery in Laceyville. Family and friends called at the funeral home on Monday, June 3 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Sarafina (Sally) Franco

Sarafina (Sally) Franco, age 63, of Philadelphia, PA died on Monday, May 6, 2002 at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. She was born in Mildred on Jan. 9, 1939, a daughter of the late Andrea (Andy) and Philomena Trapani Franco (Frank).

Sally graduated from Turnpike High School, a member of the Class of 1956 had been employed for 35 years by Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania and was a past president of the Pioneers of Philadelphia.

Friends will remember her as being compassionate, giving and fun loving. She especially enjoyed dancing.

Surviving are sisters, Mary Miller of Tunkhannock, Teresa Franco Weber of Wagontown; a brother, Carmen Franco of Tacoma, WA; two aunts, Lucy Trapani Sokalsky of Scranton and Mary Trapani Levendusky of Hazleton; her godmother and 33 nieces and nephews. Sally was predeceased by sisters, Yolanda (Betty) Looby, Christine Kerr and a brother, Rudy Franco.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 8 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Mildred, with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery.

Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Lung Association, 738 S. Main Ave., Scranton, PA 18504.

Helen Johanna Yurgatis

Helen Johanna Yurgatis of Laceyville passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2002, while visiting in Westmeath, Ontario, Canada.

She was born in Scranton on April 2, 1920, the daughter of the late Peter and Anna Yucas Labzentis. Helen was a member of the St. Joachim’s Catholic Church. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her family, gardening, quilting and helping on the family dairy farm.

Surviving are her husband, William Yurgatis, with whom she would have been married 60 years on August 22, 2002; son, Carl Yurgatis and wife, Jeanne of Laceyville; daughters, Dorothy Yurgatis Hibbard and husband, Wayne of Montrose and Marie Moore and husband, Gordon, Jr., also of Montrose; brother, Vincent (Bill) Labzentis and wife, Jean of Montrose; sister, Ann Bolles of Laceyville; grandchildren, Sandy and Bob Voda of Laceyville, Mary and Dennis Wetherhold of Whitehall, Brian Yurgatis of Laceyville, Susan and Brian Lathrop of Montrose, Wayne, Jr. and Amy Hibbard of Rushville, Gordon (Mac), III and Lisa Moore of Lawton and Chad Moore at home; great-grandchildren, Dustin, Marissa, and Makayla Voda; one uncle, many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Charlotte and Joseph Bendock, brother-in-law, Robert Bolles and nephew, Tony Bendock.

The family received friends at the Sheldon Funeral Home in Laceyville on Sunday 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with Rosary at 10:15 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church, Meshoppen, at 11 a.m. Interment followed at the St. Joachim’s Cemetery, Meshoppen.

Gladys I. Vogel

Mrs. Gladys I. Vogel, age 84, former Cherry Township resident, passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2002 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of the Memorial Hospital, Towanda.

Gladys was born June 12, 1917 in Fallentimber, Cambria County, PA, a daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth Noel Potter. She moved to Dushore and married John D. Vogel on Sept. 14, 1934. John predeceased her on Oct. 5, 1960.

Gladys worked at the former Weldon Manufacturing Company of Lopez for several years and later for GTE Sylvania in Towanda, from which she retired in 1982 after more than 20 years of service.

She was a member of St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church of Dushore.

Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard Vogel, Towanda, Thomas and Marie Vogel, Monroeton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Alice and Floyd Miller, Monroeton, Joan and Robert Exley, Mildred, Thelma and Ronald Allis, Ulster; stepchildren, Rudolph D. and Joan Vogel, Rochester, NY; Doris Stratton, Rochester, NY; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Godfrey Potter, Willard Potter and Francis Potter, all of Fallentimber; stepsons, Harold Vogel and Alvin Vogel of Rochester, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the convenience of the family at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, her pastor, presiding. Interment will be in Cambria County.

There will be no calling hours.

Lou M. VanNess
May 28, 2002
Lou M. VanNess, age 87, formerly of Camptown, PA, passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2002 in Montrose.

He was predeceased by his wife, Agnes VanNess and two sisters, Sara Sturdevant and Elizabeth Lacey.

Survivors include one daughter, Sara Lee Barbour of Hallstead; one son and daughter-in-law, L. W. and Eleanor VanNess of San Jose, CA; three grandchildren, Ann Marie Summers, Karen Travis and Rev. James Barbour; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. VanNess was formerly employed by the Endicott Forging and Mfg. Co. of Endicott, retiring after 36 years of service.

A graveside committal service will be held on Sunday, June 2 at 4 p.m. at the Camptown Cemetery, Camptown. Mr. VanNess’s grandson, Rev. James L. Barbour, will officiate.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main St., Endicott, NY.

John Alden Rigler
May 24, 2002
John Alden Rigler of Laceyville, PA, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2002 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. He was born in Philadelphia on June 6, 1940, the son of the late Christopher and Marion Alden Rigler.

Mr. Rigler served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1959-1963 and was employed with Magargee Bros. of Philadelphia for 15 years. He was also employed as Director of Operations for the Valley Forge Medical Center, Valley Forge for 10 years. Mr. Rigler was well-known in this area as an avid fisherman, enjoying many tournaments with his fishing buddy, the late Nick Carnevale, as well as many holidays and parties with family and friends. He was also a member of Post 510, Black Walnut American Legion and the Black Walnut Rod & Reel Club.

He is survived by his fiancee, Robin Brown, Laceyville; daughters, Barbara Wilson and husband, Al of Hatboro and Teresa Kuntz and husband, Mark of Jamison; one grandson, Christopher Wilson; sisters, Marie Hess, Jackie Donahue, Marion Grady, Dottie Wheeler and brother, Bill Rigler, all of the Philadelphia area. He was preceded in death by a brother, Christopher Rigler.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, May 26 at 1 p.m. at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville. Friends called from 11 a.m. until the time of the services. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Tiffany Ann Mason
May 25, 2002
Tiffany Ann Mason, age 17, of RR2, Box 2095, Irish Hill Road, Friendsville, PA, passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2002 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on SR 267 in Rush Township in Susquehanna County.

Tiffany was born at Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock on June 9, 1984. Tiffie was a senior honor student at Elk Lake High School, where she would have graduated on June 8 with her graduating class of 2002. While attending Elk Lake, she was involved in the SADD, the high school chorus, the steering committee and was a student aide with the special education classes in school. Tiffie was accepted at Mansfield University, where she would be entering the freshman class in the fall of 2002.

At the age of 18 months, Tiffie was cared for by her maternal grandmother, Charlotte Mason. At the age of seven years, Tiffie was adopted by Charlotte and Joseph Mason, residing in Friendsville. Besides her parents, she is survived by her natural mother, Patty Lin Caudill of Statesville, NC; her natural father, Gerald Terboss of Vestal, NY; paternal grandmother, Wanda Doty of Vestal; three sisters, Beth Ann Melton, Jessica Linn Wiggins and Laural Lee Wiggins, all of Statesville, NC; two uncles, Mike Rafferty of Brackney and Joseph Rafferty of Little Meadows; two aunts, Laurieann Stanton of Newark Valley, NY and Melanie Terboss of Vestal; three nieces and several cousins.

Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, May 30 at 11 a.m. from St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, State Rt. 6, Tunkhannock with Fr. Michael Fill, Rev. Vivian Bennett of the church and Rev. Maureen Hipple of the Christ Episcopal Church, Towanda, officiating. Interment will be in the Lacey Street Cemetery in Laceyville. William Edward Marbaker

Mr. William Edward Marbaker, age 35, of RR4, Box 136, Montrose, PA, (Retta) passed away as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Saturday, May 25, 2002 on SR 267 in Rush Township, Susquehanna County.

Born in Sayre on Jan. 21, 1967, he was a son of Clarence C. and Glenda Redd Marbaker of Retta.

William was a graduate of Elk Lake High School, Class of 1985. After graduation, he was a member of the U.S. Army, stationed in Ft. Polk, LA during the late 1980s. He was employed as a truck driver by the Schneider Trucking Co. for many years.

He was a member of the Retta United Methodist Church. Much of his life was spent on the road, being a truck driver.

Besides his parents, he is survived by two sons, Justin Marbaker and Quentin Marbaker, both of Montrose; sisters, Teresa Marbaker of Montrose and Mrs. Larry (Deborah Jean) Brewer of Johnson City, NY; maternal grandmother, Helen Redd of South Carolina; a niece, Misty May VanWinkle and a nephew, Darren VanWinkle, both of Montrose; also many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, W.E. Redd; paternal grandfather, Raymond Marbaker and paternal grandmother, Ruby Marbaker.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 28 at 1 p.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with the Rev. Larry Russell and Rev. Nancy Russell of the Retta United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in the Retta Cemetery.

The family received friends on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Mary Kachmarsky

Miss Mary Kachmarsky, age 88, of Sullivan Terrace, Dushore, PA, formerly of Lopez, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2002 at The Highlands in Laporte.

Mary was born in Wilkes-Barre on Jan. 19, 1914, daughter of the late John and Tanga Dzama Kachmarksy.

Mary lived on the family farm in Cherry Township, moving to Sullivan Terrace in 1992 and subsequently to the Highlands.

She was a member of St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Church in Lopez.

Surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Helen Kachmarsky, Dushore; sisters, Julia Bettin, Bloomfield, NJ and Eva Smith, Seattle, WA; sisters-in-law, Anna Kachmarsky and Helen Kachmarsky, both of Lopez, Beatrice Kachmarsky of Lakewood, CO; numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by six brothers, John Seeman, Paul Kachmarsky, William Kachmarsky, Andrew Kachmarsky, Nicholas Kachmarsky and Michael Kachmarsky and two sisters, Helen Kachmarsky and Ann Vickerman.

Burial service will be held on Friday, May 31 at 10 a.m. at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Church in Lopez, with Hieromonk Michael Thier, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in St. Vladimir’s Cemetery, Lopez.

Friends may call on Thursday, May 30 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There will be a Parastas Service at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.


John "Bob" Linney
May 22, 2002
John "Bob" Linney, 73, 46 McCord St., Tunkhannock, PA, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at his home after an illness.

Born Oct. 20, 1928, he was the son of the late Albert and Laura Wolbaugh Linney.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Betty Snyder, who died in 1975 and his second wife, Mary Countryman, who died in 1991.

A veteran of the Korean Conflict, Mr. Linney was a truck driver for Suburban Propane, retiring in 1989.

He was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are his companion, Bessie Hutchins, Mehoopany; daughters and sons-in-law, Carrie Louise Wells, Wyalusing, Donna and John Fenton, Janice Robinson, Linda Keiper, all of Tunkhannock and Nancy and Roger Happwood of Kentucky; a son and daughter-in-law, Philip and Janet Paylor, Tunkhannock; one brother, Albert Linney, Port Charlotte, FL; a sister, Gladys Linney, Factoryville; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and his wives, he was preceded in death by two sons, Donald Linney and Irving Paylor; two brothers, Gordon and Joseph; four sisters, Evelyn Swartz, Ella Benninger, Leona and Maude Linney.

Funeral services were held at the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, on Saturday, May 25 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Edwin Simmons of the Lemon United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment was in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Tunkhannock.

Friends called at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Paul Iffert
May 26, 2002
Paul Iffert, age 70, of 107 Ash St., Tunkhannock, PA, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2002 at Tyler Memorial Hospital.

Born in Sayre on Dec. 15, 1931, he was the son of the late Paul and Grace Lowe. He married the former Grace Phinney on Oct. 1, 1953.

He retired from Procter & Gamble in 1993.

Mr. Iffert was a barber in the Meshoppen area for 12 years and loved history and archaeology. He also enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include two daughters, Valerie Taylor of Williamsburg, VA and Dawn Swetland of Montrose and one son, Jeffrey of Tunkhannock.

Funeral services will be held at the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, on Friday, May 31 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Brian R. Williams of the Osterhout Bible Church officiating. Interment will be in Jersey Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, May 30 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Osterhout Bible Church.




Eugene F. Hoagland

Eugene F. Hoagland, age 68, of Towanda, PA, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2002 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.

He was born on May 24, 1934, in Towanda, the son of the late Alan and Anna Dunfee Hoagland.

He is a 1952 graduate of St. Agnes School in Towanda.

In 1990, he retired from GTE Sylvania in Towanda as a computer processor, giving 38 years of service.

Mr. Hoagland had been a lifetime resident of this area.

He was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Towanda and was a member of the Towanda BPOE No. 2191, Towanda VFW and the Towanda Gun Club.

Eugene enjoyed golfing and time spent with his family and many friends.

Surviving are his former wife, Catherine Hoagland, of Towanda; his four children, Mark Hoagland of Towanda, Patricia Hoagland of Reading, Mary Kay and Stewart DeAlba of Swanksville and Diane Terry of Towanda; a sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Ben Spencer of Manlius, NY; a brother, Joseph Hoagland of Albuquerque, NM; a very special aunt, Eleanor Dunfee of Skaneateles, NY and his four grandchildren, Hanna Hoagland, Nicholas and Paige DeAlba, Michael Terry and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today, Thursday, May 30 at 10 a.m. in SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Towanda, with the Rev. Ronald Hughes as celebrant.

Interment will follow in SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.

Friends and family called on Wednesday, May 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore.

A BPOE service was held on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Fifth Floor Oncology Department at the Robert Packer Hospital in Mr. Hoagland’s memory.



Daniel E. (Dan) Greim

Daniel E. (Dan) Greim, of LeRaysville and Glen Mills, PA, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2002.

He was the beloved husband of Arline S. Greim (nee Smith); beloved father of Bryan D., Bruce J. and Barry D.; grandfather of D. Jens, Zachary C. and Ava L.; brother of Lois G. Patterson and the late Edward S. Greim.

Friends are invited to a memorial service at Dille Parish UCC in LeRaysville on Sunday, June 2 at 3 p.m.

Ruth M. Chilson

Ruth M. Chilson, of Wyalusing, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2002 at her home. She was born in Sayre on April 23, 1936, the daughter of the late Raymond and Elizabeth Armitage Rought.

She is survived by daughters, Marie A. Fassett, Wyalusing, Sophia Chilson, Laceyville, Betty Chilson, Monroeton and Deborah Bell of Wysox; sons, Francis Chilson of New Albany, Robert Chilson of Wyalusing and Arthur Chilson of Wysox; brothers, Walter Rought of Wyalusing and James Rought of Laceyville; sisters, Margaret Ball of Wyalusing, Martha Wildrick of Stevensville and Joyce Cintron of Towanda; 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Rought.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 28 at 8 p.m. at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, with the Rev. Edwin A. Simmons, officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Friends called on Tuesday from 6 p.m. until the time of the service.






Ida A. Benditt

Ida A. Benditt, 49, of Wysox, PA passed away early Saturday morning, May 25, 2002 at Memorial Hospital in Towanda.

She was born on June 12, 1952 in Corning, NY a daughter of the late Ralph Tuttle and Mary (Bryington) Clark Tuttle. Ida, affectionately known as ‘Honey Bee’ grew up in the Granville area and graduated from Troy High School.

Ida married Philip L. Benditt on April 7, 1973. Throughout her life, Ida was a devoted homemaker, not only to her own family, but also for several foster children.

She was a member of the Granville Center Church of Christ and the Towanda Eagles Club. Ida also enjoyed volunteering and was always willing to give a helping hand whenever needed.

Surviving are her husband of 29 years, Philip, at home; two daughters, Melanie Jo Benditt, at home and Tonya Cassidy of Illinois; a sister, Wanda Clark of Troy; several foster children; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends called from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28 at the Pepper Funeral Home, Springbrook Drive, Canton. The funeral and committal services immediately followed with her pastor, Rev. Harrell Phelps, officiating. Burial was in the Beech Flats Cemetery.

A memorial service for Larry Andrew Nichols will be held on Monday, May 27, 2002 at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Redeemer in Sayre. The Rev. J. Lawrence Holman will officiate at the service. Organist will be Larry Hoey and the soloist will be Sandra Edsell.

Larry, the son of Fred and Evelyn Nichols, 909 W. Lockhart St., Sayre, died on April 12, 2002.


Arthur Morrison

Arthur L. Morrison, 87, of Laceyville RR2, PA, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.

Born July 13, 1914 in Waverly, PA, he was the son of the late Frank and Laura Monroe Morrison.

He was married to the former Ina Blankenship, who predeceased him on March 15, 1993.

Mr. Morrison was a retired dairy farmer, raising Montvalley Registered Holstein cattle that were known throughout the U. S. and Canada.

He belonged to the Evergreen Christian Church in New Albany.

He was a graduate of the Waverly High School, Class of 1932. Arthur was one of the founding dairy farmers for Select Sire, Inc., served on Wyoming County Conservation District board of directors, former member of the Wyalusing school board and active in 4-H clubs in Wyoming County.

Survivors include a son, Arthur W. "Spud" Morrison, Laceyville; a daughter, Mary J. Moon, New Albany; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three nieces and two special friends, Don Zimmerman and Tom Mulhern. Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Myrtle Pentecost and Alice Nottage and two brothers, Melvin and Glenn.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 18 at 1:30 p.m. at the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, with the Rev. Michael Dodd of the Evergreen Christian Church, New Albany, officiating. Interment was in the Mount Bethel Cemetery, Justus.

Friends called at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

Jessica Kopatz

Jessica Kopatz, 85, of Rushville, PA died on Thursday, May 16, 2002 at Hart’s Personal Care Home, Montrose. Born May 9, 1917 in Glasgow, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late Alf and Jessie (Bevan) Skatchkovsky. Her husband, Karl Kopatz, died in August of 1997.

She and her late husband owned and operated the former Rushville General Store for many years. Additionally, she was the postmistress of the Rushville Post Office for more than 40 years.

A member of the Rushville Presbyterian Church, she was a Sunday school teacher, an ordained elder and involved with the Missionary Society. She was director and secretary of the Rushville Cemetery Association and enjoyed traveling, knitting and most of all, her family.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Marie K. and Glenn Watkins of Rushville; sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Connie Kopatz of Rushville, Nelson E. and Sue Kopatz of Sayre; grandchildren, Dewey R. Watkins, Carla M. Hurley, Carolyn L. Kopatz, Craig R. Kopatz, Jonathan D. Kopatz, Scott A. Kopatz, six great-granddaughters; a niece and nephews.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 20 at the Rushville Presbyterian Church. The family received friends on Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

James Kintner
May 21, 2002
Mr. James W. Kintner, age 74, of RR3, Box 332, Meshoppen, PA (Briar Ridge) passed away on Tuesday morning, May 21, 2002 at the Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton.

Born in Meshoppen on April 28, 1928, he was the son of the late L. Hewitt and Mildred R. Stevens Kintner. Mr. Kintner was a graduate of the Meshoppen High School, class of 1946. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, in which he was a Private First Class, serving stateside. After his service time, he was employed by Bendix Corp. in South Montrose as an inspector from 1952 until 1967. In 1967, he established Kintner Market in Meshoppen, which he ran until his retirement in 1987.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Tunkhannock. A member of the Franklin Lodge #263 F&AM of Laceyville, he was a two-time Past Master and also a member of the Order of the Scottish Rite in Scranton. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Meshoppen Chapter #70, where he was a Worthy Patron. He was a life member of the Meshoppen Fire Company, where he was past Fire Chief and past treasurer. Jim was also a director of the Overfield Cemetery Association in Meshoppen.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, the former Elizabeth Beck Kintner of Meshoppen; daughter, Mrs. Mark (Mary Beth) Harshbarger of Meshoppen; two sons, William L. Kintner, Keiserville and John J. Kintner of Meshoppen; three granddaughters, Rosalyn Kintner Gorko of Falls, Heather M. Kintner, Meshoppen and Myra Lee Harshbarger of Meshoppen; two nieces. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Kintner Swanson.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 24 at 10 a.m. from the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, SR Rt. 6, Tunkhannock, with Father Michael Fill, of the church, officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family at a later date in the Overfield Cemetery, Meshoppen.

Family and friends may call at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, on Thursday, May 23 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Eastern Star services will be conducted by the members of the Meshoppen Chapter #70 at 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening and Masonic services will be conducted by the Franklin Lodge F&AM #263 at 8:45 p.m.


Debra Hassick

Debra Bennett Hassick lost her long and courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, May 18, 2002 at home in the presence of her loving family. She was 46.

She was born on Aug. 5, 1955 in Meshoppen, the daughter of Clifford and Mildred (Atkinson) Bennett. She married David E. Hassick on Sept. 20, 1980. Her greatest devotion and pride were for her three children, Scott (Scooter), Michelle (Princess) and Jason (Fluffy).

She graduated from Elk Lake High School in 1973. She then attended and graduated from Broome Community College in 1975 with a degree in nursing. She obtained her LPN license and was voted Miss Hope for the Cancer Society in 1975.

She was employed by The Meadows in Cooperstown, NY from July 1977 to Aug. 1987. After sustaining a back injury, she pursued a career in the legal field. She obtained a paralegal degree and also graduated from the Utica School of Commerce with a secretarial degree in 1992. From 1992 to 2001, she was employed by the Town of Oneonta as a Senior Court Clerk. Debra was a member and director of the New York State Association of Magistrates Court Clerks.

She enjoyed playing the piano, decorating cakes, working with her flowers and being around her children and their friends.

Debbie is survived by her loving husband, David and three children, Scott, Michelle and Jason and a close friend, Marie Jones, all of Oneonta, NY; her parents, Clifford and Mildred Bennett of Rushville; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale and Jeanne Bennett, Towanda, Rodney and Susan Bennett, Floral City, FL and Gary Bennett of Rushville; one sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Michael Halaquist of Windsor; a sister-in-law, Lorie R. Bennett of Downing, MI; her mother-in-law, Flossie Jordan of Oneonta; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins, all of whom will remember her with much love and affection. She was predeceased by her brother, Larry Bennett, who also fought a long and courageous battle with cancer, who she so dearly loved and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Arvilla Jordan.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 22 at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, NY, with the Rev. Keith Marlett, officiating. Burial followed at the Rushville Presbyterian Cemetery, Rushville. Friends called at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 21 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Blaine E. Harvey, 67, of Springville, PA, died at home on Tuesday, May 14, 2002, after a long battle with cancer. His widow is Ethel (Stone) Harvey.

He was born in Hop Bottom, son of the late Herbert N. and Leatha S. (Heavner) Harvey.

He was the co-owner of a stone quarry. Blaine enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and sports of all kinds.

Surviving besides his wife are four daughters and sons-in-law, Dawn and Ron Childress, Meshoppen, Sherry and Mick Lofaro, Lawton, Vicky and Gary LaRue, Lawsville, Lisa and Craig Reeves, South Montrose; five grandchildren, Nicholas Lofaro, Thomas and Daina LaRue, Erica and McKenzie Reeves; three brothers, Jake Harvey, Hop Bottom, Del Harvey, Springville, Walt Harvey, Springville; two sisters, Joyce Gleason, Dimock and Gussie Warner, New Milford; many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at Union Cemetery in Lathrop Township on May 19, with the Rev. Eugene B. Jensen of Dimock Community Church, officiating.

E. Grace Wilhelm, 56, of 1208 Claire Road, Montoursville, died Monday, May 20, 2002 at Williamsport Hospital. Born May 10, 1946 in Kingston, she was a daughter of Carlos and Ethel Howell Jayne.

Grace worked as a pharmacist technician for Eckerd Drug in Montoursville. She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church and the Eugene Grafius American Legion Post 14 in Montoursville. She loved animals, NASCAR and the Internet.

She and her husband, Gary L. Wilhelm, celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary on March 13, 2002.

Surviving in addition to her husband are: a son, Gary Lee Wilhelm, Jr. of Montoursville; a daughter, Tonya J. (Luis) Resto of Allentown; four brothers, John Stahl of Laceyville, Rev. Carlos Jayne of Des Moines, Iowa, William Jayne of Kansas City, Missouri and Ronald Jayne of Rock Hall, Maryland; two sisters, Patricia Newhart of Meshoppen and Sandra Monday of Indianapolis, Indiana, and two grandchildren, Emily J. and Justin Resto.

The funeral will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, with her pastor, Rev. Paul C. Murphy, officiating. Burial will be in the Montoursville Cemetery.

Wallace Decker

Wallace E. Decker, 87, of 47411 Deer Road, Altoona, FL and West Groton Road, Groton, NY died on Saturday, May 11, 2002 at his home after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Decker was born June 6, 1914 in LeRaysville, PA, a son of the late Clarence E. and Florence Holland Decker.

Mr. Decker grew up in Pennsylvania and served with the Conservation Corps during World War II.

He and his late wife, Thelma moved to Groton in 1948, where he owned and operated a dairy farm on Talmadge Road for 25 years until retirement in 1973 when his son, James took over the operation of the farm.

For the past fourteen years, he has divided his time between his residences in Groton and Florida.

He is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Esther Hall Decker; four sons and daughters-in-law, James and Mary Decker of West Groton, Roger and Claudia Decker of McGraw, Richard and Judy Decker of West Groton and Ronald and Tracie of Moravia; his two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Ron Kellogg of Queensland, Australia and Shirley and Fred Hamilton of Cortland; two stepchildren and their spouses, Carl and Janet Scheffler and Elaine and Rod Johnson, both of Groton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ted and Alta Decker, Laceyville and James and Donna Decker of Willseyville, NY; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, as well as special nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife of 47 years, Thelma M. in 1985; a brother, Clarence and two sisters, Florence Grover and T. Irene Franklin.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, (today), May 16 at 2 p.m. at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams St., Groton, with the Rev. George Gutchess, officiating. Interment will follow in West Groton Cemetery.

Lorena B. Gardner, age 94, of Jackson St., Montrose, PA, died on Monday, May 13, 2002 at Endless Mountains Health Systems, Montrose. Born March 19, 1908 in Cherry Hills, PA, she was the daughter of the late Lewis L. and Addie (Bahr) Hunsinger. Her husband, George E. Gardner died in 1990.

A member of the Methodist Church, she was also active in the auxiliary of the United Volunteer Fire Company of Montrose. She was known for her cooking, baking and her love for Pug dogs.

She was a telephone operator for many years at both the Fairdale and Montrose exchanges.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Dottie and Raymond Hollister, East Rush, Betty and Earl Holbrook, Lawsville; son, Robert Gardner of Ocala, FL; eight grandchildren, Janice Spering, Harold Hollister, Brian Hollister, Edwin Holbrook, Terry Holbrook, Scott Holbrook, Julie Poff, Cindy Klein; 17 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lena Felton of Montrose; sisters-in-law and spouses, Louise and Kenneth Hollister, Forest Lake, Grace Merritt, Vestal, NY; a brother-in-law and spouse, John and Ruth Gardner of Meshoppen; nieces and nephews.

A granddaughter, Sharon Hollister; two brothers and two sisters predeceased her.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 17 at the Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., 74 Church St., Montrose. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Helen Otis

Mrs. Helen Catherine Moyer Otis, 83, of Taylorville, Wyalusing RD, PA died on Saturday, May 11, 2002 at the Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock.

She was born Nov. 21, 1918 in Towanda, a daughter of the late Oliver and Lydia McCaslin Moyer. She attended the First and Second Ward Schools in Towanda and married Clifford P. Otis of Camptown on July 3, 1936. Clifford predeceased her on Jan. 2, 1998.

Helen worked in numerous factories, beginning at the Towanda Folding Box Factory, then 12 years at American Meter Company in Wyalusing. She later retired after many years from Arrow United in Wyalusing.

She and her husband enjoyed fishing, swimming and boating on the Susquehanna River. They also enjoyed hunting and gardening.

Surviving are a nephew, Fred (and Mary) Woodruff, Wyalusing; a brother-in-law, Adelbert Otis, Taylorville; a sister-in-law, Betty (and Donald) Hillis, Ballibay; a friend, Ann Potuck, Tunkhannock.

Helen was predeceased by her husband and a sister, Mary Ann (Mamie) Woodruff.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 15 at 2 p.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Helen Henderson Learn, pastor of the Camptown United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in the Camptown Cemetery.

Stanley Rokus
May 13, 2002 .

Stanley Frank Rokus, age 88, of Mildred, PA, died on Monday, May 13, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital in Towanda.

Stanley was born Dec. 10, 1913 in Kingston, a son of the late John and Blanche Skula Rokus. He attended local schools and served in the U. S. Army in World War II. After his discharge, he lived in California for many years and worked as a refrigeration engineer. At age 64, he walked the entire Appalachian Trail and several years later, he walked across the United States from sea to sea.

Stanley was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, Mildred.

Surviving are brothers, Peter Rokus of Montoursville and Dr. William Rokus of Leesburg, VA; a sister, Helen Dennis of Rome, NY; sister-in-law, Edith (Edie) Rokus, Leesburg, VA; five nieces, Lori Rokus, Fairfax, VA, Susan Rokus, Hamilton, VA, Jennifer Heath, Charlotte, NC, Marlene Kakartz, Rome, NY, Judy Mushino, Montoursville.

Stanley was predeceased by brothers, Joseph Rokus, who was killed at Guadalcanal in WWII and Edward Rokus.

Funeral services will be held Thursday (today), May 16 at 11 a.m. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Mildred at 11:30 a.m., with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, his pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in the adjoining parish cemetery.

Sandra Wright

Sandra Donean Stephens Wright, 55, wife of Kenneth M. Wright, Jr. of RR2, Box 120-D, Wysox, Standing Stone Township, PA, passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2002 at Memorial Hospital, Towanda.

She was born May 20, 1946 at The Mills Hospital in Towanda, the daughter of the late Roger and Ruth Stephens of Standing Stone.

Sandy graduated from Towanda High School and the Empire Beauty School. She has been a well-known hairstylist for 37 years, owning her own shop in Wysox for 35 years. One of her greatest pleasures was making people look good.

She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Kenneth M. Wright, Jr., at home; daughter and son-in-law, Kandi Kae (Wright) and Robbie Sample of Montour Falls, NY; daughter and special friend, Kasteena (Kassie) Jean Wright and Douglas Barefoot of Mesa, AZ; two grandchildren, Preston Ryin and Kassidee Kae Sample; brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Doris Stephens; sisters and brother-in-law, Charity (Stephens) Pelton, Jeanne (Stephens) and Dale Bennett; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Stephen and Nancy (Wright) Parr, Jack and JoPat Wright, Philip and Irene Wright, Gordon and Carol Wright, Dale and Susan (Wright) Malin, George and Cindy (Wright) Nolan, Mitchell and Sylvia Wright, Pam Wright and Sherry Good, Bonnie (Wright) and Clifford Shaffer, Roger and Shawna Wright; numerous nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn (Kakie) Stephens.

Sandy’s greatest joy was her large family and taking care of all of them. Her pride and joy were her two beautiful grandbabies.

The family received friends on Saturday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda.

Funeral services were private.

Interment was in the Standing Stone Cemetery, Standing Stone Township.







Blendina Magee
May 5, 2002
Blendina Magee, age 99, a former resident of Stevensville, PA, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2002 at the Highland Health Center in Wellsville, NY.

She was born on Dec. 19, 1902 in Stevensville, a daughter of the late Gilbert and Bertha Rockwell Sumner.

Blendina graduated from Camptown High School, Class of 1921. She attended Normal School at Mansfield and taught in a one-room schoolhouse where it was the teacher’s responsibility to start the woodstove fire. Later she earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Bloomsburg College and taught in several schools in Bradford County. She retired in May 1968 from Camptown Elementary School after 25 years of teaching.

Mrs. Magee was a lifelong member of the Stevensville Presbyterian Church and was a charter member of the LeRaysville Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers’ Association and the Stevensville Birthday Club.

In 1944, she was preceded in death by her husband, the late Clifton Magee.

She is survived by nieces, Margene Fuller Achilles of Geneva, NY, Janet Fuller (Robert) Love of Alfred, NY, with whom she has lived for the past eight years; Patricia Baptiste (Jack) Carr of Stevensville and several grand-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Genevieve Fuller and a brother, Benton Sumner.

Friends and family are invited to call on Friday, May 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing. Interment services will follow at 6:30 p.m. at the Spring Hill Cemetery, Wyalusing with the Rev. Helen Learn, pastor, officiating.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

John Thomas Karaban

John Thomas Karaban, a thirty year resident of Dushore, PA, died at home on Sunday, May 5, 2002. He was 78 years old. John was a retired machinist from Piels Brewery, Brooklyn, NY.

The son of Joseph Karaban and Aniela Kosokowa Karaban, he was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 19, 1923. He married the former Angeline Castiglia of the Bronx, NY on Oct. 13, 1950 and they recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary.

He was a member of St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church in Dushore.

A family statement read: "John was a simple and humble man who valued God above all else and his wife, children and grandchildren. He was an unselfish individual who enjoyed growing fruits and vegetables, which he donated to the less fortunate in soup kitchens, to the elderly and family throughout the area. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife at home, Angelina Castiglia Karaban; one daughter, Mary Karaban Sekely and her husband, Paul of Black Walnut; four sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Kristine Karaban of Highland Mills, NY, Thomas Karaban, at home, John and Deborah Karaban of Overton, Walter and Karen Karaban of Telford; his brother, Walter Karaban and wife, Helen of Ossining, NY; ten grandchildren, Adrienne, Michael, Brendan, Christopher, Chelsea, Jessica, Cassandra, Patrick, JT and Kaylee.

Friends called at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home in Dushore on Tuesday, May 7 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 8 at 11:30 a.m. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, and was followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon at St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church, Dushore, with Rev. Michael B. Harris, his pastor, presiding. Burial followed in St. Basil’s Cemetery.

Robert G. Colbenson, Sr., 76, of 10 Margrow Rd., Tunkhannock, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2002 at Tyler Memorial Hospital.

Born in Tunkhannock on Oct. 18, 1925, he was the son of Dorothy Graham Colbenson of Tunkhannock and the late William B. Colbenson.

Robert and the former Doris Harvey would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on June 30.

He was a retired U.S. Postal Service worker, serving as postmaster in Tunkhannock. He also served as maintenance supervisor for the Tunkhannock Borough Municipal Authority and for the last four years served as maintenance supervisor for Wyoming County. Robert was a Navy veteran of WWII.

He was a member of the Tunkhannock United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the Triton Hose Co. for 55 years, Temple Lodge #248 Free and Accepted Masons in Tunkhannock and a former squidget coach for Tunkhannock Baseball Association.

Robert loved to spend time in his garden.

Survivors besides his wife and mother, include one son, Robert G., Jr., Tunkhannock; two daughters, Linda Herman, Tunkhannock, Barbara Jamison, Clarks Summit; two sisters, Shirley Cokely, Springville, Elsie Puza, Tunkhannock; one brother, Keith, Tunkhannock; three grandchildren, William Colbenson and Andrea Herman, Tunkhannock and Elizabeth Jamison, Clarks Summit; one great-granddaughter, Angela Colbenson, Tunkhannock; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock on Sunday, May 5 at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Roger Richards of the Tunkhannock United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in Sunnyside Cemetery.

Friends and family called on Saturday, May 4 from 4 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Tyler Memorial Hospital or Triton Hose Company.

Elaine M. Ferris Canfield

Mrs. Elaine M. Ferris Canfield, age 60, of RR1, Box 212, New Albany, PA, passed away at her home in Terry Township, Bradford County early Sunday morning, May 5, 2002 after an illness.

Born in Elmira, NY on March 31, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Catherine Woodruff White, who passed away on Dec. 19, 1992 and Olaf Fred and Ethel Ferris of Monroeton. Growing up in Elmira, she attended the Southside High School.

Working most of her life, she was employed at many jobs in and around the Wyalusing area. For the last few years, she enjoyed her time working as a housewife.

She attended the Wyalusing United Methodist Church and was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association. In her spare time, she enjoyed being surrounded by her family and friends. Elaine also enjoyed her time with her animals, especially showing and riding her horses and owning and breeding many types of dogs. She was also an avid collector of Barbie dolls and Boyds bears.

Surviving besides her father and stepmother, is her husband of 37 years, Duane W. Canfield, Sr.; three daughters, Nikki Lee and her husband, Francis T. Baines, III of Dallas, Kim L. Canfield of New Albany, Stacy Canfield and her husband, Kevin Swain of Terrytown; two sons, Duane W. (Buddy) Canfield, Jr. of New Albany and Dennis J. Canfield and his companion, Tina Schein of Dushore; a sister, Nancy Blemle of Wyalusing; two brothers, James Ferris and Dennis Ferris, both of Elmira; four grandchildren, Garritt and Whitney Chrzanowski of Dallas, Lyndsey Swain of Terrytown and Macey Fulmer of New Albany; also several nieces and nephews. Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Christy Canfield, who passed away on May 5, 1972; a sister, Tina White, who passed away in 1969 and stepfather, Leslie (Pete) White, who passed away in 1999.

Memorial services were held at the Wyalusing United Methodist Church on Wednesday, May 8 at 1 p.m., with Rev. Beverly Davenport of the church, officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family at a later date. Family and friends called at the church on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

Emma D. (Jones) Anderson, 86,s of Union Center, NY, died at her son’s residence on Saturday, May 4, 2002. She was the daughter of the late Son and Tillie Jones of the Neath area.

She was a member of Union Center Methodist Church and attended Twin Orchards Baptist Church.

An IBM Corporation employee, she retired after 35 years of service and was a member of its Quarter Century Club. She worked and sold Shacklee Products for several years.

She is survived by one son, Harvey D. Jones, Whitney Point; one sister, Velma Rought, Owego, NY, cousins, Vivian Edsell of Stevensville, Shirley Howard of Wyalusing and Joyce Fields of East Herrick, from the local area; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel L. Anderson; a son, Wayne Coole; four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 8 at 11 a.m. from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main St., Endicott, with the Rev. Timothy Dodd and Rev. Brown Naik, officiating. Interment was in Vestal Park Cemetery, Vestal, NY.

The family received friends at the memorial home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
