Helen Hottenstein

- Helen Jeannette Hottenstein of Forksville, PA, a pioneer in modern nursing, organizer of a local home health agency and world traveler, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital in Towanda.
Helen was born April 23, 1928 at the Dr. A. J. Bird Maternity Home, New Albany, a daughter of the late Willard Bryon and Blanche Kester Hottenstein. She graduated from New Albany Vocational High School, Class of 1946, received her RN degree from the Robert Packer Hospital in Oct. 1949 and a BSN from UCLA in 1976. Helen credited her aunt, Ruth Arey for inspiring her to nurse and care for others. She began her nursing career in Allentown State Hospital, moving on to the Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, upon the recommendation of Dr. Guthrie of Sayre, who was a friend of Alton Ochsner, a world-class surgeon. Due to the low salaries then paid nurses, Helen also babysat and thus met the president of Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, who offered her a job in Saudi Arabia.
Helen spent 14 years in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia (1955-1970), with the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO) in various capacities in the hospital. She traveled extensively to Jordan, Lebanon, Vietnam, Europe, Africa, China, Japan and around the world14 times. She even ended up in a few scenes in the movie, "Bridge Over the River Kwai," which was filming when she was in Ceylon.
Helen was in Dhahran during the Six-Day War when the Arabs attacked the hospital. In 1968, Helen and her comrades received a blessing from Pope Paul II in his quarters in Rome for their relief efforts in the aftermath of the Six Day War.
To be closer to her aging parents in 1970, Helen returned to the U.S. and went back to UCLA, working in Los Angeles at the Veterans Administration and then the County Hospitals. She was also clinic coordinator for the Foothill Chapter of the Flying Samaritans, a non-profit group devoted to medical and educational aid to remote villages in Baja, California and Mexico, flying to remote areas of Mexico every two weeks.
But "once you get your feet wet in the Loyalsock, youll always come back," and Helen did in 1976, following the death of her mother. In 1977, she assumed a position as director of nursing at DarWay Nursing Home, Forksville until 1983 when she assumed a position at Memorial Hospital, where she established the hospitals Home Health Care Agency. April 19, 1995 was designated Helen Hottenstein Day by the Sullivan County Commissioners in recognition of her "total involvement and commitment to her county and community" and for her efforts to "assure that residents enjoy healthier and happier lives." A retirement party at the Memorial Hospital in 1995 honored her for "her dedication and commitment in pioneering home health care for the hospital in Bradford and Sullivan counties."
Her memberships include the Towanda Chapter No. 76, Order of the Eastern Star, the State Nurses Association Alumni and Dushore Lions Club. Helen donated her time and energy to many worthwhile causes, serving on the board of the following: Area Agency on Aging, the Sullivan County Council on the Arts, the Sullivan County Council on the Arts, the Sullivan County Historical Association, St. Pauls Consistory, St. Pauls Womens Guild, the Sullivan County Library Board, Bradford-Sullivan County Red Cross and Dushore Tuesday Club. Helen served as the chairperson of the Sullivan County Assistance Board since 1978 and rarely missed serving as a nurse at the local bloodmobiles.
She is survived by "Duke" and numerous cousins. Helen was predeceased by her mother in 1975 and father in 1991.
A memorial service will be held at St. Pauls United Church of Christ, Overton on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Robert W. Martin, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in St. Pauls Cemetery.

Gertrude Kunkle

- Gertrude M. Kunkle, age 97, of Wyalusing, PA, passed away on Friday evening, Oct. 25, 2002 at her home.
She was born on Jan. 19, 1905 in Wilmot Township, Bradford County, a daughter of the late Elmer G. and Lela Potter Arey.
On May 28, 1924, Gertrude became the bride of Robert F. Kunkle. He preceded her in death in June of 1970.
She lived her entire lifetime in this area.
Mrs. Kunkle was a member of the Wyalusing United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
In 1975, she served as Past Matron for Wyalusing Chapter No. 523, Order of the Eastern Star and was a present member of Meshoppen Chapter No. 70 Order of the Eastern Star.
She enjoyed time spent sewing, making her home and tending to her flowers and gardens. She especially loved time spent with her grandchildren.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Reta and Floyd Oliver of Wyalusing; three sisters, Lydia Vose of Orlando, FL, Gladys Storrs of Elmira, NY and Margaret Arey of Wyalusing; a sister-in-law, Genevieve Arey of Wysox; her five grandchildren and their spouses, Robert and Irene Oliver, Linda and Dennis Brown, Curt and Tina Oliver, Thomas and Debbie Rounsville and Timothy Rounsville; seven great-grandchildren, Robert, Oliver, Jr., Jason Oliver, Adam Oliver, Jenny Brown, D.J. Brown, Rachel Rounsville and Thomas Rounsville; three great-great-grandchildren, Fontana Oliver, Janie Lynn Oliver and Haley Elizabeth Hemmerly.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Thomas Rounsville; a brother-in-law, Niles Storrs; brothers, Ralph Arey and Glen Arey and a sister, Mildred Arey.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 28 at 11 a.m. in the Wyalusing United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Russell Pierce, her pastor, officiating.
Meshoppen Chapter No. 70 Order of the Eastern Star conducted services at 9:45 a.m.
Friends and family called on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Interment followed in the Wyalusing Cemetery.
Pallbearers were her grandsons and great-grandsons, Robert Oliver, Curtis Oliver, Dennis Brown, Thomas Rounsville, Timothy Rounsville, Robert Oliver, Jr., Adam Oliver, Jason Oliver and D.J. Brown.

Harriet Edsell

- Harriet Alice Edsell, age 77, of Stevensville, PA passed away on Monday, Oct. 28, 2002 at her home with her loving family at her side.
Alice was born in Warren Center on Dec. 16, 1924, a daughter of the late Olin and Anna Bowen Jones. She graduated from the LeRaysville High School, a member of the Class of 1944.
Alice married J. Bernard Edsell of Stevensville on June 30, 1945. She and her husband operated the family farm in Pike Township until retiring.
Alice was a loving spouse and mother and enjoyed being with and cooking for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to go snowmobiling during the winter and also was very gifted working with ceramics. She was an avid gardener, both with flowers and vegetables. She was always with her great loved dog, Pepper.
Surviving are her spouse, Bernard, at home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Mary Edsell, Gene and Gloria Edsell, Leo and Cheryl Edsell, all of Stevensville; four daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Alden Brown, LeRaysville, Harriett Payton, Stevensville, Oma and Ed Taylor, LeRaysville, Dawn and George Bolles, Laceyville; sisters-in-law, Marian Jones, Rome, Ruth Jones, North Orwell, Marian Jones of Florida; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Alice was predeceased by brothers, Fenton Jones, Llewellyn Jones and Paul Jones and a sister, Christine Rought.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with Rev. George Jatko, pastor of the Neath Welch Congregational Church, officiating. Interment was in the Stevens Cemetery, LeRaysville.
Friends called at the funeral home on Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to the charity of ones choice.
Mary Kithcart

- Mary Jane Kithcart, 53, wife of Daniel C. Kithcart of Ulster RR2, PA, passed away Monday evening, Oct. 28, 2002 at her home, following an extended illness.
Born April 7, 1949 in Sayre, she was a daughter of Aletha Myers Porter of Wyalusing and the late Denton Porter. Mary Jane spent her early years growing up in Terrytown and was a graduate of Wyalusing Valley High School, class of 1967. On April 13, 1968, she married Daniel C. Kithcart in Laceyville. Mary Jane was employed by GTE Sylvania in Towanda for 25 years until declining health no longer permitted her to continue. She enjoyed bowling for many years and attended the Terrytown Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Daniel C. Kithcart, at home; her mother, Aletha Porter or Park Place, Wyalusing; a son, Daniel C. Kithcart, Jr., of Washington; a sister, Barbara Porter of Park Place, Wyalusing; two brothers and sister-in-law, Robert and Linda Porter of Wyalusing and Gordon Porter of Athens; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Denton Porter.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Dennis Fox, pastor of the Terrytown Baptist Church, officiating. There were no calling hours.

Marie Mraz

- Marie A. Mraz, age 52, of LeRaysville RR1, PA, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002 at her home.
She was born on Dec. 12, 1949 in Reraitin, NJ, a daughter of Harold and Ann Pelicko Lukas.
On Oct. 25, 1969, Marie married John C. Mraz in Summerville, NJ. They celebrated 33 years of devoted marriage.
Mrs. Mraz had been a resident of the LeRaysville area for nine years, having moved from Piscataway, NJ.
She left surviving her husband, John C. Mraz, at home; her mother, Ann Lukas of Port Charles, FL; two sisters, Ann Marie Brienza of Lebanon, NJ and Diane Clim of Port Charles, FL and her two nephews, Robert Luke Clim and Russell Clim.
She was preceded in death by her father, the late Harold Lukas.
The family received friends and family on Thursday evening, Oct. 31 at the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Interment will be at the convenience of the family at a later date in New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 733 Third Ave., New York City, NY 10017 in Mrs. Mrazs memory.
Eleanor Nazarene
Mrs. Eleanor Nazarene, age 74, of RR1, Wyalusing, PA (Indian Hill), passed away at the Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock, after an illness.
Born in Philadelphia, on Feb. 25, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Anna Kaminski Boycheck. Mrs. Nazarene was a graduate of the William Penn High School for Girls, Class of 1946. She was the wife of the late Charles W. Nazarene, who passed away on Sept. 1, 1987.
From 1979 until 1992, Charles and Eleanor owned and operated the Nazarene Family Center on Main St. in Laceyville. During that time, Mrs. Nazarene was very active in the Laceyville Business Association.
She is survived by a son and his wife, Joseph and Colleen Nazarene of Diamond Point, NY; a daughter, Julianne Nazarene of Athens and a daughter-in-law, Joan Nazarene of Manasssas, VA; three grandchildren, Rebeccah Sitzman and Jessicah Nazarene, both of Manassas, VA and Michaela Nazarene of Diamond Point, NY; a great-granddaughter, Samantha Sitzman of Manassas, VA; two nieces and three nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Charles Nazarene, Jr. in 1996 and a sister, Jennie Schimmel in 1996.
In abiding with Mrs. Nazarenes wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services.
Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville.
Joyce Carola

- Joyce Louise Bishop Cook Carola, 70, of Sayre RR1, Litchfield Township, PA, passed away on Monday morning, Oct. 28, 2002 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
Born May 12, 1932 in the Zurn family homestead in Wysox, she was the daughter of the late Chauncey I. and Mary Zurn Bishop.
Joyce was a graduate of Towanda High School, Class of 1950 and later completed nursing training at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre in 1953. In 1956, Joyce married Walter E. Cook of Towanda, who preceded her in death in 1981. She began her career as a registered nursing with the Allentown General Hospital, Allentown, and later with Mills Hospital in Towanda. She was an evening charge nurse at Memorial Hospital in Towanda and provided nursing care at the Marie Foyle Home in Towanda. Joyce was the initial director of nursing for the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital in Towanda, until her retirement in 1984.
On May 12, 1984, Joyce married Andrew A. Carola and the couple moved to New Jersey that same year. They returned to the Litchfield area of Bradford County in June of 1988 to make their home. Following her return to the area, Joyce worked part-time as a nurse at the Skilled Nursing Unit in Towanda and as a consultant and evaluator for the Area Agency on Aging in Towanda. Joyce enjoyed gardening and bowling.
She was fondly known by her grandchildren as "Grandma No."
Surviving are her husband, Andrew A. Carola, at home; sons and daughters-in-law, Terry F. and Mary G. Cook of Towanda, William J. and Belinda M. Cook of Milan, James E. and Heidi J. Cook of Towanda; her daughter and son-in-law, Mary K. and Richard D. Horton of Litchfield Township; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Mary R. and Joseph Gurinko of Bangor, Michele G. and Brett Sager of Randolph, MA; grandchildren, Charles J. Cook, Mandee M. Mize Carr and her husband, Shane Carr, Alisha E. Cook, Kyle A. Cook, Nathan J. Cook, Felicia Cook, Michelle L. Cook, Latoya Jackson, Gio Cook, Shatira Cook, Eric J. Cook, Michael Cook, Chance Cook, Quincy Cook, Joshua Gurinko, Nichole Sager; great-grandchildren, Rylee S. Carr and Jasmine M. Cook; her brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Irene Bishop of Ulster; her sister, Betty Sweet of San Diego, CA; several stepsisters and stepbrothers; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and many good friends; very special friends with whom Joyce worked: Margo Ace, Sandy Curry, Tracey Parsons, Larraine Fowler and Eileen Boland; her pets, Cydney, Clarence, Spooky, Tango, Cash and Bonnie Blue.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter P. Cook; her father, Chauncey I. Bishop; her mother, Mary Zurn Bishop; her stepmother, Helen Irvine Bishop; a grandson, Nicholas Sager; her brother-in-law, Bob Sweet and a very special friend, Lloyd Ace.
The funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Maureen Hipple, Rector of Christ Episcopal Church, Towanda, officiating. Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Towanda.
The family received friends on Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Craig Benio

- Craig T. Benio, 31, of Brackney, PA, died on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002 at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville of natural causes. Born Aug. 5, 1971 in Johnson City, NY, was the son of Thomas J. Benio of RR1, Montrose and Gay Rose (Aven) Benio of Tunkhannock. On March 24, 2001 he was married to Gail A. Pennay, who survives.
A 1989 graduate of Montrose High School, he also graduated from Robert Morris University in 1994 with a B.S. in Sports Management. He was a technician at Procter & Gamble in Mehoopany and also owned and operated Sensible Sports, a golf scorecard printing company. He coached girls and boys Little League and also was a PIAA baseball umpire, an avid baseball card collector and enjoyed fishing.
In addition to his wife, mother and father, survivors include a stepmother, Joanne Benio, RR1, Montrose; mother-in-law and stepfather, Marianne and Lyle Oakes of Fairdale; maternal grandmother, Mary Bassett of New Castle, aunts and uncles, John and Helen Benio, Montrose, Edward Benio, Montrose, Larry Benio, Kennesaw, GA, Gay M. Adrian, Columbus, OH, Barbaro Kinder, Long Island, NY, Mary Aven, New Castle, Renee OBoyle, North Homestead, OH, Domenick Aven, Rocky River, OH and many cousins.
He was predeceased by paternal grandparents, John and Tessie Benio.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 28 at the Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., a Selected Independent Funeral Home, 74 Church St., Montrose, with a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Name of Mary Church, 60 S. Main St., Montrose. The family received friends on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert Takacs

- Mr. Robert Steve Takacs, age 78, of RR2, Box 257, Mehoopany, (Lovelton), PA, formerly of Carteret and Englishtown, NJ, passed away at the VNA Hospice Unit of the Community Medical Center in Scranton on Friday morning, Oct. 18, 2002.
Born in Perth Amboy, NJ on Aug. 11, 1924, he was the son of the late Steve and Helen Panko Takacs and was a veteran of WWII, serving with the Merchant Marines. He was employed for many years as a heavy equipment operator with C.M. and R.T. Wade Company in Linden, NJ, after which he owned and operated his own scrap business in Carteret and Englishtown, NJ, before retiring in 1985 and moving to Mehoopany.
He was a member of St. Anthonys of Padua Catholic Church in Stowell and was also a member of the Irvington Elks Club Lodge #1245, in Irvington, NJ.
Survivors include his wife, the former Jane Lesko Takacs, to whom he was married for 56 years; a son, Ronald Takacs of Mehoopany; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and John Adams of Cliffwood Beach, NJ; a brother, Raymond Takacs of Viera, FL; a sister, Elizabeth Rorro, Whiting, NJ; a grandson, Robert A. Takacs of Meshoppen and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Takacs, who passed away on Aug. 16, 2001.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were made through the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 West Tioga St., Tunkhannock.
Belva Hugo

- Belva Hugo, age 87, of Ramsey, NJ, passed away on Friday, Oct. 18, 2002 at the Rolling Hills Nursing Home in Lebanon, NJ.
She was born on Nov.17, 1914 in New Albany, a daughter of the late Charles and Winifred Vargason Cranmer.
On June 3, 1938, she became the wife of Maynard D. Hugo. Belva and Maynard had celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.
On 1947, she moved to Ramsey, NJ from the Philadelphia area.
Mrs. Hugo enjoyed time spent crocheting.
She left surviving her husband, Maynard D. Hugo of Ramsey, NJ; a son, Ron Hugo of Glen Gardner, NJ; her grandchildren, Michelle and Michael DAconti of Budd Lake, NJ, Brian and Tanya Hugo of Concord, NC and a great-granddaughter, Gianna DAconti of Budd Lake, NJ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Carmeta Heath and Evelyn Saddlemire.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore, with the Rev. Ronald Troup, pastor, officiating.
Interment followed in Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills.
Friends and family called on Monday, Oct. 21 at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday, Oct. 22 from 12 p.m. until the time of the service.
Sadie Horn

- Sadie Mae Horn, age 80, of Sullivan Terrace in Dushore, PA, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002 at her home.
She was born on Nov. 29, 1921 in Washingtonville, PA, a daughter of the late Paul and Anna Cotner Hoagland.
In 1970, Sadie was preceded in death by her husband, the late Freeman Horn.
Prior to her retirement in 1983, she was employed by Excel Manufacturing in New Brunswick, NJ.
She had spent most of her lifetime in this area, with the exception for the time she spent in the New Brunswick area. In 1983, she moved back to the Sullivan County area.
She was involved in the many organizations within Sullivan Terrace and served in offices.
Mrs. Horn was an avid Mets fan.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Freeman, Jr. and Debbie Horn of Williamsport; a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Steven Miller of Forksville; sisters and brothers, Betty Matthews of Mountain Home, Arkansas, Walter Hoagland of Muncy, Helen Bashore of Sunbury, Richard Adams of Watsontown; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 21, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore, with the Rev. Robert W. Martin, pastor, officiating.
Interment followed in Cherry Grove Cemetery.
Friends and family called on Sunday afternoon at McHenry Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and on Monday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. until the time of the services.
The family provided flowers and suggested donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Fund in Mrs. Horns memory.
Mildred Williams

- Mildred Mosier Williams, 88, widow of Donald E. Williams of Potterville, Rome RR1, PA, passed away on Friday, Oct. 11, 2002 at the DarWay Nursing Home in Elkland Twp., Sullivan County, PA.
Born June 27, 1914, she was a daughter of the late John and Clara Herring Mosier.
In earlier years, Mildred was employed by Ansco Corp. in the Binghamton, NY area, Endicott-Johnson Shoe Company in Johnson City and by the Margaret Casterline Nursing Home in Warren Center.
In July of 1942, Mildred married Donald E. Williams and together they operated their farm in Potterville for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald on July 18, 2001. Mildred was a member of the United Church of Christ in Potterville and was a long time member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 498 in LeRaysville. She was also a member of the Potterville Ladies Aide Society and LeRaysville Sewing Circle.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Randy Jennings of Potterville, Donna and Douglas Stewart of Potterville, Nina and Danny Snodgrass of Towanda RR4; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Martha Spencer of Troy; a daughter-in-law, Doris Spencer of Herrickville; 30 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Leslie Spencer; an infant daughter, Ramona; two grandsons, Larry Snodgrass and Steven Spencer; two great-grandsons, Christopher and Joshua Spencer; a sister and eight brothers.
The funeral service was held on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with Brother John Histand, officiating. Interment was in the Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills.
The family received friends on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. The Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 498, LeRaysville, held a memorial service on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

- Elouise Mae Mann, age 73, of the Colonial Terrace, Towanda, PA, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
Born April 28, 1929 in Wyalusing, she was a daughter of the Burgess and Blanche Roof Mann. Elouise was a graduate of Camptown High School. She was formerly employed by the American Meter Company in Wyalusing and by several area garment manufacturing establishments throughout her life. She was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
Surviving are her sister, Doris Bouren of Greenville, SC; her sister-in-law, Cleola Mann of Huntingdon; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Mann in 2001; a nephew, Richard Bouren in 1998 and by a grand-nephew, Patrick Sarvey.
A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, Towanda.
There were no calling hours.

- Leo H. "Rick" Dalpiaz, 61, a highly regarded Monroeton resident and retired Towanda Educator, died on Sunday morning, Oct. 13, 2002 at his home on Canton Ave. in Monroeton, PA.
Born Nov. 24, 1940 in Centralia, he was a son of the late Leo J. and Esther I. Minnich Dalpiaz.
"Rick," as he was known by his family and many friends, was a graduate of Mount Carmel High School, Class of 1958 and subsequently served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1959-1960. On Aug. 25, 1962, Rick married the former Donna Lore in Berwick. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Bloomsburg State College in 1963 and later received his masters degree in education from Elmira College.
Mr. and Mrs. Dalpiaz moved to the area in 1963 when Mr. Dalpiaz accepted a teaching position with the Towanda Area School District. He taught sixth grade Social Studies in the Towanda schools for 34 years, retiring in 1997. He was the founder of the Annual Sixth Grade camping trip to Camp Brule for Towanda students and also assumed leadership of the summer recreation programs held at the SCI building in Towanda for many years. Mr. Dalpiaz was a member of the Adjunct Faculty of the Lackawanna Junior College History Department in Towanda.
He was a member of the Monroeton United Methodist Church, participated in the church choir and served as the president of the church administrative council. Rick was past master and secretary of Evergreen Lodge No. 163 F&AM, Monroeton. He was secretary-treasurer, a trustee and honored twice as Fireman of the Year of the Monroe Hose Company in Monroeton. He served as a fire policeman in the area for many years. Mr. Dalpiaz was vice-president of the Monroe Borough Council and was a past president of the Towanda Band Boosters.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 2191 Towanda, where he participated in the Holiday Melodies and One More Tyme Minstrel Singers. Rick was an avid New York Yankees baseball fan and Civil War enthusiast, having attended many re-enactments of the war at Gettysburg.
Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Donna L. Dalpiaz, at home; his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin J. and Tammy Dalpiaz of Shermans Dale; his daughter and son-in-law, Heather J. and Billy Mendler of Lake Wesauking; three grandchildren, Hannah and Bryce Dalpiaz and Meghan Mendler; his brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Linda Dalpiaz of Sunbury; two nieces, Bria and Wendy Dalpiaz; a nephew, Nicco Dalpiaz; his mother-in-law, Maqueen Lore of Berwick.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Monroeton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ronald Troup, officiating. Interment followed in the Monroeton Cemetery, Monroeton, with the Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 according full military honors.
The family received friends on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda and on Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.
Evergreen Masonic Lodge No. 163 held memorial services on Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Towanda Elks Lodge No. 2191 held a service at 6:45 p.m.

Archie Cruikshank

- Archie E. Cruikshank, age 58, of Sugar Run, PA, formerly of Blossburg, passed away at his home in the early morning of Oct. 12, 2002.
He was born on Oct. 21, 1943 in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late Jay Miller and Katherine Miller Cruikshank.
Archie was a graduate of Meyers High School, Wilkes-Barre, Class of 1961.
His education included the Eastern Christian College in Bel Air, MD (1961-1964); Mansfield University (1980-1984) and Colgate-Rochester Divinity School of Rochester, NY (1984-1987).
On March 9, 1963, he married the former Ruth Ann Kitzmiller. It was a loving marriage of 39 years.
Pastor Cruikshank served the following parishes: Whitneyville Larger Parish; Morris Charge; Muncy Valley United Methodist Charge; Saxton-Six Mile Run Charge; Christ Larger Parish; Covington Disciples of Christ; a youth minister and interim pastor for the First Church of Christ of Wilkes-Barre and served as a supply pastor for Inkerman and Plains Presbyterian Church.
He was a former member of the Sullivan County and Blossburg Kiwanis Organization; board member for Academy for Professional Growth; Committee on Episcopy; mentor for new pastors; Cluster Leader for the United Methodist Churches and local area ministeriums and was a clergy member of the Central Pennsylvania Conference of United Methodist Churches.
Mr. Cruikshank was an Eagle Scout and was a Boy Scout leader in the Wilkes-Barre area.
He had been a resident of Sugar Run for two-and-one-half years, moving from Blossburg, where he was serving the Blossburg Covington Charge.
He enjoyed time spent playing the trumpet, music and woodworking.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth, at home; three daughters, Connie Cruikshank of Milwaukee, WI, Gayle (Jim) Huffman of Sugar Run, Alison (Kevin) Lang of Allentown; two brothers, Phil Cruikshank and William Cruikshank, both of Wilkes-Barre; six grandchildren: Kacey Huffman, Erika Huffman, Karlye Huffman, Robert Abrahamian, Alexa Abrahamian and Brady Lang.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. in the Covington United Methodist Church, Covington, with the Rev. James Dawes, District Superintendent for the United Methodist Church of Wellsboro, followed by a time of fellowship in the fellowship hall.
The family provided their own flowers. They suggest that contributions be made to the Preachers Aide Society of Central PA Conference or the Mercy Kasambira Scholarship Fund, c/o Wellsboro District Office of the United Methodist Church, RR3, Box 54-A, Wellsboro, PA 16901.

Carl Crain

- Carl Crain, age 87, of Laceyville RR1, PA, passed away on Friday, Oct. 11, 2002 at Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock.
He was born Jan. 16, 1916 in Nanty Glo, a son of the late Alfred and Ina Nieminen Crain.
He is a graduate of Nanty Glo High School, Class of 1934 and St. Cloud University in Minnesota, and received his masters from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI.
On Oct. 20, 1945, Carl and the former Marion Anderson united in marriage in Brainerd, MN. It had been a loving marriage of over 56 years.
Mr. Crain was an elementary school educator working in the International Falls School District, International Falls, Minnesota and retired in 1981 from the York School District in York, PA. Following his retirement, he had served as a substitute in the Wyalusing Area School District.
Mr. Crain was a mentor for his nephew, Matt Crain.
He enjoyed time spent walking his dogs, traveling and was especially fond of the scenery in Pennsylvania.
He left surviving his wife, Marion Crain, at home; his daughter, Ruth Crain; at home; a grandson, John Crain, at home; a brother and sister-in-law, Alan and Anna Crain of Rocky Boy, MT and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred and Levi and by his twin sister, Bertha.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Hilda Schmeckenbecher

- Hilda M. Schmeckenbecher, 80, well-known area businesswoman, passed away on Friday morning, Oct. 4, 2002 to go home with her Lord.
Born Jan. 8, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Harriett Northrup Monahan. Hilda was the owner and operator of the Wayside Inn (Bucket of Blood) in Towanda Township for over 44 years. She attended the Wysox Presbyterian Church, was a member of Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 Auxiliary, Monroeton Rod and Gun Club and the Wysox Ambulance Association.
Hilda enjoyed working in her yard amongst her flowers, cooking, traveling, raising polled Herefords and her canine companion, Rosie.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and David McFarlane of Phoenix, AZ; a daughter, Marlene Maynard of Towanda RR5; a son, Charles W. Schmeckenbecher of Towanda RR4; granddaughters, Sherie Weiss of Canton, Michelle Martin and her husband, J.B. of Rome, Wendy Elliott and her husband, Brian of Towanda RR5; grandsons, Stephen Schmeckenbecher and his wife, Angie of Wysox RR2, Robert K. Maynard of Towanda RR5, Scott Schmeckenbecher and his wife, Gwen of Athens RR2; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Carlyle "Toad" and Edna Monahan of Arcadia, FL; a sister, Bethelda "Betty" Knapp of Arcadia, FL; a sister-in-law, Marilyn "Christine" Monahan of Arcadia, FL; several nieces, nephews and cousins and special caregivers, Pauline Edsell, Betty Lewis and Angie Schmeckenbecher.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles K. Schmeckenbecher in Dec. of 1968.
The funeral and committal services were held on Monday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Thomas A. Geiger, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, Towanda, officiating.
Interment will be at a later date in the Oak Hill Cemetery Mausoleum, Towanda.
The family received friends Sunday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. and Monday from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Harry Keeney

- Mr. Harry C. Keeney, age 80, of RR3, Box 95, Meshoppen, PA (Jersey Hill) passed away at his home on Thursday morning, Oct. 3, 2002 after an illness.
Born in Meshoppen on April 28, 1922, he was the son of the late Garth and Jennie VanGordon Keeney. Mr. Keeney was a graduate of the Meshoppen High School, Class of 1940. He also attended the Penn State University.
Serving his country during WWII, he was in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1946. Mr. Keeney was in the tank battalion, a sergeant with the 69th Infantry, 777th Armored Division in the European Theatre. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge. For 39 years he was employed by Sire Power in Tunkhannock as an artificial breeder, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of the Meshoppen United Methodist Church and its choir; member and past master of the Franklin Lodge #263 F&AM, Laceyville; member and past associate patron of the Meshoppen Eastern Star #70; member of the Rought-Hall Post #510 American Legion, Black Walnut; charter member of the Tunkhannock Barbershoppers Choir and the Barbershop Quartet, The Neighborhood Boys for over 14 years. He was a coach of Little League Baseball in Auburn for many years and a director of the Jersey Hill and Overfield cemeteries. For many years he enjoyed antique car and tractor shows, where he showed his 1963 Thunderbird and his1950 Model N Ford tractor.
Surviving are his wife, the former Lorraine Pinnock Keeney, to whom he has been married for 56 years; sons and their wives, Lee Thomas and Judy Keeney of Jersey Hill, Jack and Patricia Keeney of Collegeville; daughter and husband, Jill and Wade Lunger of Jersey Hill; brother and wife, Fred and Ruth Keeney of Essington and sister-in-law, Lucy Keeney of Meshoppen; six grandsons, Master Sergeant Lee Keeney of Pasadena, MD, Ryan Keeney of Meshoppen, Matthew Keeney and Timothy Keeney, both of Collegeville and Kristian and Colin Lungar, both of Jersey Hill and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gerald Keeney and Donald Keeney.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m. from the Meshoppen United Methodist Church with Rev. Dan Herron officiating. Interment was in the Jersey Hill Cemetery. Friends and family called at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, on Sunday, Oct. 6 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Meshoppen Eastern Star #70 and Franklin Lodge #263 F&AM conducted services on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Graveside military services will be conducted at the Jersey Hill Cemetery by the members of the Rought Hall Post #510 American Legion and the Endless Mountains VFW Post #3583.
Andrew Huffman

- Andrew Walter Huffman of Feeding Hills, MA passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002.
He was born in Wilmot, PA on Nov. 5, 1918, a son of the late Fred G. and Georgia Meeks Huffman.
He served in the U.S. Army as a medic during World War II in Germany.
Andrew was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Anna Smith Huffman in Feb., 2002 and his brothers, Levi, Melbourne and Alfred Huffman and a sister, Loueva Gladys Huffman.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, John and Kathy Huffman; grandchildren, Laurie Bryden, John, Andrew and Sarah Huffman; great-granddaughter, Sydney Bryden; brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman and Peggy Huffman, Raymond and Lloyd and Kathryn Huffman, all of Wyalusing; a sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Larry Kneller of Merryall; sisters-in-law, Lena Huffman, Theresa Huffman and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at the Wyalusing Cemetery on Friday, Oct. 4 with the Rev. Barry Ballard officiating.

- Amy Kay McKernan Frederick of Wyalusing, PA, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002 at the Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA.
Amy was born in Towanda, Oct. 18, 1973, a daughter of John R. McKernan and Marie H. Harney. Sh e graduated from the Wyalusing High School, a member of the Class of 1992 where she was a cheerleader for the athletic program. She married John T. Frederick of Wyalusing on Oct. 29, 1994 and was currently employed by the Procter & Gamble Paper Products Co. in Mehoopany.
Amy was a member of St. Basils Church, Dushore. She was also an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed riding her Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Surviving are her spouse, John, at home; a son, Derek Frederick, at home; a brother, James M. McKernan, Wilmot; her father, John R. McKernan, Dushore; mother, Marie H. McKernan, Dushore; paternal grandparents, John D. and Betty L.
