Wyoming County Extends CARES Act Grant Deadline to Aug. 28Free Access

The Wyoming County Commissioners, at their workshop on Thursday, Aug. 13, voted to extend the deadline for applications for the county’s CARES Act grant program by two weeks to Friday, Aug. 28.

The original application deadline for this project was Friday, Aug. 14.

The grant program is being funded through $2.1 million in federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act money that the county received.

The action by the commissioners is being taken based on conversations that the board has been having with the PA Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), according to Commissioner Chairman Rick Wilbur.

The commissioners were slated to have a “one-on-one” meeting with DCED representatives that afternoon to go over any final details that the state may require of the county’s grants program, said Wilbur.

“I’m a little concerned that we’re going to have (obtain) additional information from people,” he said. “But with the deadline set as (Aug. 14), I think we’re going to miss some people and I don’t want to do that.”

There will be no extension past the new Aug. 28 deadline.

“After (Thursday), we should know all the final rules,” said Wilbur. “That gives us two weeks to dot our ‘i’s and get our ‘t’s crossed.”

As of Thursday’s workshop meeting, the county has received 180 requests for applications and 110 completed applications have been returned.

Areas that are eligible to apply for Wyoming County’s CARES Act grant program include:

—Any small business with less than 100 employees within Wyoming County.

—Municipalities to cover direct expenses related to COVID-19. The loss of tax revenue is not an eligible area to be funded under this program.

—Tourism businesses of all sizes.

—Non-profit 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(19) organizations. The 501(c)(19) organizations are veterans’ groups.
